El Conquistador is a lovely, family friendly resort, and we can’t wait to go back! The premises are clean, the staff is friendly and helpful, and you can get everything you need at the resort. The private island is a must, and the best food I had in Puerto Rico was on the island. It was a simple chicken kebab grilled fresh just yards from our cabana on the beach, but the meat was perfectly cooked and tender and the sauce was delicious. Served with sweet potato chips, it was the perfect beach lunch.

From the moment we arrived we were greeted with smiles and hospitality. We were able to check in to our room hours early and the check in staff was extremely helpful. The hotel lobby was beyond gorgeous. High ceilings and Spanish style design throughout. The room was incredible, very clean and spacious with a nice view! Probably our favorite part of our stay was the private island and the water park. If you’re visiting Puerto Rico search no further you must give this hotel a try. We’ll definitely be back!

So it's obvious that this place is a shadow of its former self - they're still very much rebuilding after Maria. But they have more than enough stuff open for the number of rooms they have open, and we found the week pleasantly uncrowded. The pools are absolutely gorgeous, the water park is modest compared to mainland amusement parks (three slides and small lazy river) but a really nice perk for families, and the private beach is pretty. Be aware you have to book the ferry to get to the beach and it does book up. There used to be a bunch of amenities you can find references to in much older reviews around online - horses and water sport rentals and snorkeling and kids clubs and a spa. None of those are available at the moment. This is not their fault - they don't advertise anything they don't have, and they're clearly rebuilding stuff as fast as they can. Just don't look at old write ups and be disappointed. We had a lovely time, with gracious and helpful staff. Concierge was very helpful, especially when a tour I'd booked myself fell through. Comfortable and clean rooms (and the balcony in our room was a huge hit). The breakfast package is definitely worth the money if you're inclined to eat on site and have kids. Try the french toast, it's delicious!

Buckle Up – This will probably end up being long. If you don’t feel like reading it all – scroll down to my final comments section. Last time at El Con was 2009. Was looking for a place where I could take my 2 grandchildren (10 & 7) and their parents for our annual vacation. At the time I booked, my priority was going someplace where we would not have to take Covid tests to enter or return home to the US. Turns out US ended its Covid testing requirements the day we left for Puerto Rico, but I couldn’t take a chance on that happening when I booked. Just didn’t need the stress that I had to deal with last summer. Second priority was a resort with a water park onsite. That is hard to find except at a Beaches, and then I thought of El Con. Booked airport transfers to and from El Con with Luquillo Taxi. Wonderful service; on time; professional communications when booking, pre pickup both ways; excellent and professional driver. Booked two rooms – asked for connecting rooms when I made reservations and called one week before arrival to confirm. Of course, was told they would make a note of it but no promises. We did get connecting rooms (3539 and 3540) in Las Brisas. I really liked this floor and location because we were on the lobby level and a short walk to the coffee place, pool, etc. Easy walk to the funicular. The only negative is that the double doors leading into our wing made a terrible banging sound – which was disturbing when trying to go to sleep. I never book connecting rooms when it is just the two of us traveling – I hate them. Anyway, for our situation it was perfect and I’m so glad I did that. Rooms –We knew what to expect since we had been there pre hurricane – but the rest of my party (even the kids) were in awe at the view from their balcony. It is truly a one-of-a-kind view. I sincerely doubt the rooms were renovated rooms, but they were clean, and we thought they were just fine. I would absolutely stay in those rooms again. Toiletries are TERRIBLE. I was so sorry I had not brought at least my own conditioner. Note, that the “refrigerator” that is in the room will only hold about 4 bottles of water and a few small items on a very small shelf and nothing else. Don’t think you are going to stop by a grocery store and bring food back to put in that fridge. Oh, yes, the beds are low but actually for me I was happy about that so I didn’t have to worry about the kids rolling out of bed with a long drop to a tile floor. Pools – Great pools (we only used the main pools on the lobby level and in the water park). Water park – This was the highlight of the trip because of the 10 and 7 year old. We went there every day. The 7 year old is over 48” so they both went on the slides over and over again. (They do measure the kids so be sure you aren’t setting your kids up for a great disappointment.) The lazy river (fastest lazy river I have ever been on) was also a big hit. The zero entry pool with an infinity edge was also a big hit. Beach – We had to make reservations for the boat ride to the beach but that is understandable as the large boat can only hold so many people at one time. But since reservations are free, it appears to be common that people don’t show. They had “messed up” our reservations and only had us down for 4 when there were 6 of us. We were told to wait to see if the 64 (?) would show up and only about 40 or so did so we easily got on. We remembered how much we disliked this beach in 2009 and it hasn’t improved (for us anyway). It is a nice enough beach but I really believe that the people rave about this gorgeous beach have not been anywhere else in the Caribbean. (If an absolutely beautiful beach/water is important to you, go to Beaches T&C). There are loads of lounge chairs with palapas or umbrellas and nice prompt food (grill) service. The water, however, is another story. The water is as shallow as ever. There is no gentle wave action so no fun floating is possible. The bottom is full of small stones that aren’t exactly easy to walk on (bring water shoes). Snorkeling is nonexistent. The day we were there, there was a terrible bee problem. They were everywhere; we eventually just threw our drinks away and half of our food just to try to get rid of them and got on a return boat as soon as we could. I had planned to go the beach several times, but no one even remotely wanted to go back. Food – I knew going in that the food was going to be expensive (but really it is just like typical resort prices – like Atlantis, etc.) The price didn’t bother me that much but some of the quality was bad. Some was OK. Some was pretty good. However, the servings on particularly the meat were huge. I think cutting back on size but improving quality would be better. We did finally take the short walk along the sea road to Las Croabas where I had read there were restaurants offering more variety at lower prices. Actually, there were only 3 places that we found to be open. Two were just as expensive as El Con but did have much a greater variety of options and probably had better tasting food. The other one (Café Playero) that we chose had a much greater variety and better prices than El Con. We thought the food we got there was excellent – actually the best fried shrimp and fries we had in many years anywhere. Service – We found everyone to be exceptionally friendly and helpful. We only had one issue – at the outdoor restaurant (Café Bella Vista) by the main pool. My DIL ordered a picture of sangria. She knows her sangria and she told the server that there wasn’t any alcohol that she could taste in the sangria – just tasted like juice – and the small pitcher cost $35. She asked the server to get the manager to come and taste it. The manager did come to the table along with the bartender who had made the sangria. The bartender said she had put alcohol in the sangria. The manager refused to sample it, siding with the bartender. My DIL calmly explained that after spending thousands of dollars there that week, that she felt she should not be charged for the sangria. The manager “graciously” took $10 off – so basically we paid $25 for a small pitcher of juice. That type of nickel and diming is not acceptable at a place that considers itself an upscale resort. So, my thought is that they probably water down drinks across the board. Just be aware. IMPORTANT FINAL COMMENTS: We were there the week of June 12. Probably not the most popular week for vacations in general. Keep in mind that the resort is far from having the majority of their rooms ready for occupancy. This means that we had a fantastic week of maybe 10 people in the main pool – empty loungers everywhere. The water park was really empty. Walked right on the slides at any time of the day the water park was open. Max 10 people in the water park pool at one time. Seats available in every section. Never lines for the funicular nor was the funicular ever jammed with people. I WOULD NOT WANT TO GO TO THIS RESORT when all or many more of the rooms are open for occupancy. I can imagine how crowded the funicular would be; how crowded the water park would be, etc. It would have been an entirely different vacation experience for us and not in a good way. We all had a great time; my grandkids loved it. For my purposes, it was a perfect fit for a family vacation for kids who love being the water. Just go soon before it gets overcrowded.

We just had the best dinner of our trip at this restaurant. Chaleska and Bolivar were on top of all of our needs and are the best servers on the resort. We went to all the restaurants too, so we know!!! They were kind, funny, and there anytime we needed something! We’ll be back because the New York strip was delicious!!!

I just traveled to Puerto Rico for the first time and after looking online decided to stay at El Conquistador. First things first there is no airport shuttle and the resort is almost an hour from the airport. We were able to find an uber which was around 45 bucks to take us to the resort but due to its location when we checked out we had to have the resort set up transportation to the airport and it was 135 bucks. The resort exterior is very beautiful and after pulling in and seeing it I was very excited to see our room. Lets just say it was not as beautiful. We stayed in room 1312 which you had to take a trolley to reach. It was listed as a double queen room, the queen mattresses were set on top of a wooden platform so they sit very low to the ground. The resort is not beachside you have to take a boat over to the private beach that closes at 5pm. FYI the waterpark consist of three slides and a lazy river. The restaurant that is located upstairs that serves breakfast was extremely hot and was not air conditioned. I decided to try the brunch at the restaurant down by the Marina closest to our room. I went in and was seated by the hostess, I sat there over 25 min. I ended up leaving and when the hostess asked why I was leaving I explained that I had been waiting for over 25 min and was not even greeted. The internet is very unstable in our room. So watching Netflix in the rooms was very challenging. The hospitality and service at this resort was terrible. All in all I will never stay at this resort again nor will I recommend it to anyone.

This place is as beautiful as it looks. I wanted so badly to leave a five star review. But when I pay a premium price for a room, I expect to have a good night of sleep. At 1am there was a huge amount of noise outside my room. It started with running and yelling and slamming doors. Then, security came and was yelling loudly on their walkie talkies for 30 minutes. I understand that there was a disturbance that was out of their control, but the way they dealt with it was not. On top of that incident, there were other small disappointments. You have to book the ferry to palomino several days in advance. You get charged for everything, including locker rental at the water park. Parts of the hotel are still run-down, which I assume is from the hurricane. I would've overlooked all that but being jerked awake for an hour in the middle of the night with my kids hasn't left me feeling good about el conquistador.
