Some work friends and I left Managua at 7 AM, stopped to grab some breakfast and arrived in less than 3 hrs. We ate lunch in the restaurant (can get a good burger if you cash in the entrance fee receipt). Paid 100 Cordobas for entrance fee to the park. Great walking trails,

The grounds at Selva Negra are beautiful. Definitely with a visit if you're in the Matagalpa area. Our group of 9 ordered a mix of beer, cocktails and coffees. The wait to be served those drinks was at least 20 minutes. Food was served at random intervals before we received

You do definitely need a coat or a sweater in the Northern areas of Nicaragua. I just visited Selva Negra in August 2016 and I wore a sweater and jeans. It's not terribly cold but it can get chilly, especially since it rains quite a lot. Most areas of Nicaragua are really hot and you don't need anything except for a t-shirt and shorts, but in the mountains it's useful to bring something a bit warmer.
