Island Roots is a beautiful hostel located in one of the prettiest and safest areas of Big Corn Island, a neighbourhood with strong Creole heritage called South End. The hostel is in two-minute walking distance to beautiful and unspoiled Silver Sun Beach. At Island Roots you can enjoy comfortable rooms, a large and lovely garden, as well as spacious and cozy common areas that will make you feel at home.
We stayed here for 4 nights. The atmosphere at the house is great, it really felt like we we family/friends. We had a big room with bathroom and a big sized bed! There’s a kitchen free to use and for $1 you can refill your bottle everyday. We used the house as a fall out base, from there we went to the different beaches on the island which was great. If needed the owner will call a taxi to drive you around the island. All in all, great location, very nice host and good room with all the needed equipments.

Found this little gem in low season at $8 a bed and I had the dorm to myself! It was one of the cleanest hostels I've stayed at in Nicaragua and the staff seemed friendly, although as I was the only guest not much was happening (which is fine for me). Use of the kitchen was valuable as eating out all the time would be too costly! The only small things were that I didn't get a sheet or blanket for my bed or a towel, and tiny ants seemed to be everywhere. However besides that, all round perfect stay whilst I was doing a dive course. Very scenic walk to the dive shop every day :)

We had the most amazing time at Island Roots. An excellent stay, price-quality was more than good and the hosts Webster, Claudia and Ingrid (and don’t forget little Jada) where very helpful and made us feel like family. During your stay you will probably meet some more colorful people that will enrich your journey. The beaches are near, went out a la Caribbean-style, went spear fishing (ask for Chico) and Gayle cooked some amazing rundown and baked some delicious patties (ask Ingrid). Lean back, go with the flow and enjoy your stay at this place (and Big Corn). We will definitely come back one time.

I can’t think of a single negative thing to say about this beautiful hostel. It has a real family feel to it. It feels more like you’ve rented a summer home with friends! The house is always beautifully clean. Large kitchen with everything you need to cook some good meals for yourself. But if you don’t feel like cooking, there are really great places to eat just a short walk away. And lauri is so helpful with suggesting places to eat and places to visit in general. The hostel has a really nice social atmosphere without being a crazy party hostel. The neighbourhood feels really safe. It’s an easy walk to at least 2 beautiful beaches. And a taxi to other beaches is always only 20 cordobas. Big Corn island is a beautiful paradise. And staying at island roots just makes it even better! …

The moment you step into the gates of this wonderful hostel you're welcomed by the very kind owner, Lauri, or one of the great staff members. As soon as you're settled in, you're provided with all the information and tips needed to make the most out of your stay at Big Corn Island. The place is immaculately clean and you'll feel dangerously inclined to just stay on the property because of the laidback atmosphere and inviting hammocks instead of exploring the wonderful island. Luckily, good dinner options are only a walk away. The hostel is a part of the local community, which means you'll get the chance to have a (sometimes literal) taste of the creole culture by just hanging around.

Found ourselves on Big Corn Island this winter in search of some good scuba diving. Our dive shop highly recommended this hostel if we were travelling on a budget. What we found felt more like home than a hostel. Technically it is a home, the owner Laurie, has opened her doors and created a nice home away from home for us backpackers. Clean beds. Clean rooms and bathroom. A full kitchen with beer and water available for at cost. Hammocks and hangout spots all over. Was there through the weekend and Laurie’s boyfriend made a giant pot of ron don for everyone to have. Great part of the island too. Everything was within walking distance and super safe and quiet. Enjoyed ourselves and would recommend to anyone passing through.

I landed on Big Corn after the last boat left for Little Corn, and so spent a night at Island Roots. The dorm was very clean and comfortable, with good quality bunks and plenty of fans. The hostel has a real family home feel to it, and Laurie the owner is very warm and welcoming giving advice on navigating the island and things to do. There is a very large garden with hammocks and chairs where everybody congregates - guests and locals alike and you'll be sure to meet some interesting people to talk to well into the night. After spending a week on Little Corn, I then returned to Island Roots for a few more days and was sad to eventually leave. It's a great hostel and I have no hesitation in recommending it to others. You also get a discount in Relax restaurant next door, where they do a great breakfast.…

Finding along your trip a place that makes you feel at home is greatly valued by any traveller. And perceiving the ‘soul’ behind such place makes it even more special. With ‘soul’ I mean charisma, originality, vibrant energy… genuine passion and dedication to it. That it’s exactly what I enjoyed the most from Island Root. A spacious, clean, well located, colourful hostel; run by two enthusiastic and kind ladies, Laura and Antonia. Despite Island Roots has hostel prices the size and facilities of the bedrooms are Hotel level (check the photos!). The garden and common places are really nice and you cannot miss the Jungle shower! Laura and Antonia will provide you all the information you need to have an amazing time in the island. THEY LIVE THERE AND THEY KNOW THEIR NEIBOURHOOD AND PEOPLE, so you quickly feel in tune. The island is gorgeous and quite. Despite the political situation in the country the atmosphere is chill allowing you to have the unforgettable break/trip everyone deserves. The landscapes, the good energy of the locals, the fresh fish and tropical fruits, the reggae tunes constantly playing in the background creates all a very special experience. Thank you Laura and Antonia for helping to treasure such amazing memories! Paz x…

As someone who has stayed in a lot of hostels around the world, and has a career in managing high end properties, I was very impressed with the hostel. Island Roots was kept immaculately clean at all times. For the price, the rooms are great - spacious dorms with comfy beds, pillows and towels, fans available. Nice areas to relax in, decent kitchen facilities. I booked for a few nights and ended up staying there for my entire stay. Good proximity to the beach and a few places to eat. Taxis are cheap and accessible. Safe area. Friendly, homely vibe. I would definitely recommend it as a hostel.

This was an incredible find and felt like a home away from home by the time we left (we stayed 6 nights in total)a. We stayed in a private room and while this is a hostel, the private room with en suite was hotel quality. The entire place is immaculately clean! The owners, Laura and Antonia are great, they are so helpful and when you check in they provide so much useful information about the island! The island is not very big and you can get a taxi anywhere for less than $1. This hostel is located near reef beaches meaning lots of great snorkelling opportunities! A short taxi ride also takes you to pristine shallow 'typical Caribbean' beaches too. You can rent snorkels and bikes from here which are really useful while on the island. We can't recommend staying here enough, you will not be disappointed and it is great value for money!…
