Kulu Safaris - The Pioneers for mobile tented camping safaris. Deep in the jungle away from the hum drum of everyday life is the opportunity for man and nature to reconnect – the way it used to be. This opportunity has been made possible by Kulu Safaris Sri Lanka. Kulu Safaris redefined the concept of camping in Sri Lanka in the National Parks with mobile tents which allow you to immerse yourself in the wild with all the comforts that modern civilization can give you. As you go on sightings of elephants, leopards, bears and birds along with your own professional naturalist you can rest assured that you will have delicious cooking, a comfortable tent and even hot and cold showers when you get back to camp. Our mobile camping experience combines five star luxuries with natures wildest. Our spacious tents come fully equipped with hot and cold water showers, toilets and a huge bed to relax in. Cozy lounge chairs at the entrance to your tent provide you with the space to unwind and relax to the sounds of the great outdoors.
We are a family of four from Australia (2 adults and 2 children, ages 4 and 7) who travelled around the whole of Sri Lanka in November 2024. The highlight of our trip was definitely staying 2-nights at Kulu Safaris for the following reasons:
- Knowledgeable animal guides with an excellent eye for wildlife - thank you to the amazing Ramani, Ajith, Pramod and Chaminda - the kids were ecstatic to see all the wildlife, especially the tusker, leopard, mongoose and bears!
- Safe drivers - we were transported safely around safari and this was very much appreciated with our children being on board. During the safari, we witnessed some other cowboy companies driving wildly around the national park, with two overloaded jeeps even getting stuck in thick mud with the vehicles tipping over!
- Delightful morning and afternoon tea snacks provided during the safari, a hit with the kids. We especially appreciated that my son’s allergies to nuts were catered for.
- Sophisticated camping tents with comfortable bedding, fluffy pillows and clean towels.
- The best Sri Lankan food we had tried around the island, including dietary requirements catered for, especially a nut allergy and gluten free diet. The barbecue prawns, elephant leaf fry and the banana flower fry were our notable mentions.
If you are looking for a fun, safe and hygienic safari, especially if travelling with young children, look no further than Kulu Safaris, you will not regret your choice. The company most importantly respects the animals and their surrounds.
Happy Travels!

Difficult to describe in words the hospitality and excellent service. Since we arrived they made our holiday special. Special thanks as well as to all the staff at Pramoth who were with us all the time and took care of every detail with utmost care. Kulu Safaris is the best place you can treat yourself to visit Yala. Great location being practically already inside the park, perfect cleaning of the room and the field in general, but above all a particular note to the quality and goodness of the dishes prepared with typical recipes. Among the best eaten during our trip to Sri Lanka. Thanks again to all the staff and we hope to return soon!

A great experience from the moment we were met at the meeting point. Praba was an excellent host and guide and Ajith was an incredible driver. All the staff we encountered were very friendly , professional and attentive. Our first afternoon's safari was postponed to the following day, due to the rain, but we were constantly asked if we needed anything as we sat reading under our canopy. Beer? Tea? G and T?
Our tent was equipped with everything we needed and made for a different experience to the usual hotel stay. We had both safari drives on the same day which wasn't a problem. Block 1 ,a short drive away, in the morning and Block 5 , 40 minutes away, in the afternoon. We were lucky enough to see a leopard on each drive plus many other birds and animals. Neither Block seemed very busy when we visited, maybe due to Kulu's location away from the bulk of the hotels. Also loved the post safari refreshing towel and G&T.
The food was very tasty and very, very plentiful. You will not go hungry here. The dinner on the jetty was lovely with good food and wine in a beautiful setting.
Yes, it's expensive but we absolutely loved it and would recommend it to anyone wanting a different experience .

Dear Debra, Thank you for sharing your experience! We’re delighted that you enjoyed every moment of your stay—from Praba’s expert guiding and Ajith’s skillful driving to the thoughtful hospitality of our team. It’s great to hear that the rain didn’t dampen your experience and that you still had an incredible day of safaris, spotting not one but two leopards! We’re so glad you loved the dining experiences, especially the jetty dinner, and that the little touches like post-safari refreshments made your stay even more special. Your recommendation means the world to us, and we’d love to welcome you back for another unforgettable adventure! Best wishes, The Kulu Safaris Team

Experience Yala National Park via Kulu Safaris! Kulu Safaris tastefully hides luxury in a camping lodge. Tents are packed with all necessary amenities including WiFi, A/C, fans and an attached bathroom. Everything was clean and tidy. Tents are positioned to give the guests the feeling that it's a solo camping in nature, facing a beautiful lake with a constant breeze blowing all day long. The treehouse on the big Palu tree had such beautiful views that I felt a poem was about to burst out of me! Meals at the campsite were amazing! Authentic Sri lankan, taste bud tantalising, healthy dishes & drinks. Every trip to the yala national park was full of excitement as the Kulu Safaris jeep driver/guide was not only very knowledgeable about the frequent locations of the major animals like the leopards, elephants, coyotes, water buffaloes etc but he was in a network with other guides to quickly take us to a location when animals were spotted-Thank you Rohana! I was most impressed by Kulu Safaris' attention to detail when I found out that there was a box packed with cold water bottles, fruit juice and snacks! (just when we were hungry like Hippos!!) Excellent service by the team - so very thorough! Cheers!! Javana and his Kulu Safaris team gives all the luxury loving glampers out there a beautiful safari experience without ugly concrete monstrosities (Thank you). I personally think just a holiday at Kulu Safaris is what we all need in our busy lives. A place to be one with nature, enjoy healthy food and simply relax, dream away & allow our creative side to blossom.

I stayed at Kulu 29/06-01/07 and had an amazing experience. The tents are very comfortable with showers and air conditioning, with a large campsite which offers nice views of a lagoon. The evening and morning safari was very good with lots of unique animals. Our guides, Pramoth and Rohana, had extensive knowledge of the area and could identify various species of birds that were very hard to see. The staff went above and beyond regarding hospitality which enhanced the experience. Also, the food was amazing.
Overall, the Kulu experience was amazing and a must-do for people looking to visit Yala.

We came to Kulusafari in the dry season (not intentional) but from the time we reached at the camp the Kulusafari team made our stay really special. The food was delectable our family tent nice and clean (keep in mind this is inside the jungle you are bound to see insects etc.) Special thanks to ‘Kois and Wimale’ and rest of the team. I recommend this place hands down. Lots of little personal touches here and there from the crew made it special. The safari ride was a success with 2 leopard sightings. They tracked the big cat with expertise without being aggressive. We are looking forward for another stay.

Stayed two nights in a family tent. An amazing experience! The location is bordering the Yala park and consists of 6 tents which are well kept and cozy. The staff is top notch and the food is simply delicious - mostly traditional Sri Lankan food. The safari trips were in their own jeeps which are Land Cruisers and kept clean and disinfected. They arranged a Hill Walk which was a little trek up a hill but true wilderness experience. The staff accompanying us were very helpful and took all the necessary steps to make the trek safe and enjoyable. The staff consists of wildlife enthusiasts and they shared some of their experiences with us and showed us a few risks on spotting animals and identifying paw prints. Thanking the entire staff for a one of a kind experience in the wilderness!!

This was the experience of a lifetime! The glamping tent was more comfortable than many hotel rooms we've stayed in--air conditioning quietly kept the space at perfect temperature and humidity while allowing the night sounds of the jungle to lull us to sleep. The food was amazing, every meal unique and perfectly prepared Sri Lankan cuisine. Safaris involve both skill and luck when it comes to what animals you encounter--but Praba and his team will find them for you if the animals are ready to show themselves. Kulu Safaris exceeded every expectation we had for the safari; they amazed and delighted us at every turn. Highly recommended!

Booked a two night stay early NOV 2024. Booked directly with the company; good clear email comms.
On day 1 our driver dropped us at the rendezvous point where two staff of Kulu Safaris welcomed us and drove us to the camp. We felt very welcome from the start. Easy check-in process and lunch provided as booked.
All meals had a nice personal touch; one dinner on the deck near the lake, breakfast in the woods. Did climb the treehouse but no meals done there due to unpredictable weather. Quality of the meals and drinks was nice; good variety of all meals provided.
Staff were all professional, respecting privacy and always happy to help. On Safari driver and guide were Ajith and Prabe. They entertained us well a suggested several walks when not on safari.
Compared to some of the African safaris we have done in the past the amount of wildlife was less but still interesting. Given the drive to Sector 5 is quite long using normal roads, I was surprised not to see seatbelts in the vehicle used.
As we went in NOV, it wasn’t the best weather (very hot during the day) and mostly wet in the afternoons. Took a morning safari to sector 1 and afternoon safari to sector 5, which turned out to be very wet with several hours of heavy rain; obviously not the fault of the staff or company. Rain ponchos were promptly provided to make the best out of it. Saw a Leopard, slot bear, elephants and most of the other common animals in Yala.

Thank you for having interest in Kulu Safaris!
Since our campsite is located on the Katagamuwa side of the Yala National Park:
The best option from Kandy and Colombo would be to take a direct bus to Kataragama - our team can pick you from the Kataragama town.
Colombo to Kataragama
you could take a train to Matara and from Matara take a bus to Kataragama.
should you hire a vehicle it would cost you approx 200 USD
Colombo - kataragama ( 200 USD)
Kandy - Kataragama ( 200 USD)
Please write to us for more information.
Many thanks,
Natasha
