We stayed at Mahoora Yala for 3 nights and cannot praise the team enough. Pre-trip: We booked directly with Eco Team and the office team were really responsive to emails, organised our transfers and were very helpful. The camp: The camp itself is lovely- it's next to the buffer zone of the park and there are lots of birds etc. The tents are impressive in terms of their facilities, especially if you remember that these are not permanent structures! They are both functional and comfortable and had lovely touches e.g. freshly lit candles every evening. The fans do a good job at keeping you cool at night. The camp staff are very friendly and helpful. The food was great. The safaris: These really are the star of the show- we did both half day and full day trips. The safaris have both a driver and naturalist and this really enhances the experience. Moreover, their enthusiasm for the park and sharing it with others was clear. Avinka looked after us so well. He was excellent at spotting animals, explained lots to us about the park and really took the time to get to know us. We got some beautiful leopard sightings but we were also interested in all the other different animals and birds, we were never rushed and could ask to stop and watch whenever we wanted. We also want to make a special mention of how hard everyone is working to make the trips a success despite the challenges in Sri Lanka at the moment. The camp's generators supply power during the regional blackouts and our driver worked overtime (after we came back from our drives) to ensure there was always fuel for the safaris. Despite the adversity, the hospitality we were offered and the experience we had was second to none. In summary: if you've come to Yala to experience the beautiful park and the abundant wildlife we would definitely recommend Mahoora!

Really great adventure in the middle of nature, everything was perfect. The very friendly staff, the delicious food, the set up, the room (clean, comfortable and cozy). Thank you guys for an unbelivable stay. During our safari we were lucky to see two leopards and on our night walk we did see a tarantula - spectacular :-)

A beautiful camp with a lovely setting. The staff is very accommodating and attentive. The accommodation is very nice and more than I expected in the wilderness. Dinner around the campfire - stunning! And the safari was beautiful, we were lucky enough to see the leopard Jerry and the guide patiently and thoughtfully explained everything :)

I will never forget our time at Mahoora & Yala. It was an absolutely unreal experience from start to finish with so many elements of luxury combined with being out of our comfort zones which made it completely unique. Thank you to our host Pasa for making it all the more memorable. Accommodation: The tent was super cool! Two comfy double beds, very nice decor with lovely candles and soft lighting throughout, good security against mozzies and biting insects & powerful fans to keep cool in the night. The sounds of the surrounding brush & jungle were pure bliss. Food: It’s all inclusive and they certainly are generous! For dinner we enjoyed 6 courses of delicious food cooked over the BBQ. We dined around a bonfire under the stars with fire flies and even the odd shooting star. The chefs were excellent and our catering host was super friendly and epitomised the hospitable Sri Lankan reputation. Safari: My god… as an enthusiastic wildlife photographer, the chance to see a leopard was almost too much to handle. We ended up having the BEST view of a female leopard before any other jeep arrived at the scene. This was all due to our amazing experienced driver & naturalist guide known as Pasa. I think me and Pasa are now best friends as we had such a fun time during our full day safari. He was just as excited as us to see such good views of the eagles, and families of elephants up close & personal! Unreal Please note: if we hadn’t seen a leopard this would still have been a 5/5 rating as we can’t control Mother Nature and we had such great sightings of such a diverse range of Fauna. Extras - they offer night walks after dinner which was so cool! There’s also tea buffets & foot spas for when you return from a long day in Yala which is super welcomed. Overall: I can’t recommend this experience enough for any wildlife enthusiasts or anyone wanting to really connect with nature in a safe environment. Absolutely fantastic and we will be returning 100000% Thanks guys Fab

Mahoora stays true to its concept but may not be everyone’s cup of tea. They bring out glamping quite graciously. The place and tents are beautifully decorated. Quite spacious. The rooms don’t have AC. There was a fan. At night it wasn’t a problem. The washroom didn’t have hot water. Since we did Wilpattu Safari early morning, taking a wash in cold water was bit of a concern. Again all of this were informed to us prior, and is no shortcoming of the hotel. They packed a delicious breakfast for our Safari and we were given a knowledged tracker.

Let me start by saying the good thing - the guys that work at the camp are genuinely lovely and nice. However this has honestly been the most shockingly mis-sold with overinflated priced place we ever stayed in and our experience was frankly diabolical. The value for money just isn't there. It is a total joke that they are charging African safari prices for "all inclusive glamping luxury" - as described on their website, with allegedly gourmet meals and drinks including spirits provided. You arrive at this so called "eco camp" greeted on a rusty metal platform with warm disposable facewipes (the only time you get them, never after a safari) and a tea. When we were showed to our "elite tent" I just felt like crying. The 'two hammocks (as per website) on your verandah' turned out to be one with holes so big in it I couldn't risk going on it. The tent was dark, unbearably hot, holes through the window netting at several places big enough for your thumb to go through. We're had to report this and only some of it was repaired. Why did they not inspect the room before our arrival? Maybe they did, the attention to detail is sadly lacking here. The tent was dirty (wish never looked under the bed), glasses which had been rinsed, not washed properly, by our bedside, cheap thin towels, disgusting dirty bathroom only separated by (again dirty) curtain which was hanging on the only few supporting hoops which hadn't already disintegrated from behind the head of the bed! See photos for yourself. The shower head was so clogged with scale the water trickled out in all directions, and never enough water for 2 showers however brief. The tiny toiletry bottles had obviously been used by previous guests (and this is a covid safe camp?) and were not refilled during our stay, not was our drinking water unless we're asked. The camp is really in the middle of nowhere with some very noisy neighbors that were partying until early morning with loud music each of the 3 nights we had to remain here (we managed to cancel the fourth but only with heavy negotiation since they have a no cancellation policy. There's a surprise! Once you're there you are stuck. Every night we had to empty bugs out of the tent due to the holes in the netting and elsewhere on seams, around the bathroom etc. And getting up for the loo at night was a scary (what am I going to step on) uncomfortable and embarrassing affair, separated only from my partner's head on his pillow is behind a thin curtain). The lack of storage for our clothes meant we had to put one of our suitcases directly on the floor, making us even more concerned about bugs getting into them. There is a long drive full of potholes to get from the camp to the wildlife park. Around 40 minutes at the least. You feel washed out by the scents of hanging on during this arduous journey alone. The safari drives themselves are along extremely bumpy, potholed sand and mud tracks and although our driver was very skilled indeed, on each time we felt like our internal organs got reorganised several times. It didn't feel covid safe at all that we were sharing 2 old binoculars ( only one is decent quality) with the naturalist and our driver on the safari. For the price paid I'd expect high quality binoculars, separate for the staff and guests! The park is sadly very sparse with animals and basically the 'safari' just ends up being a 'boy racers in their trucks' chasing around trying to track down a leopard. The fact that we were passing other kind of animals, wildlife and birds which would have liked to have stopped and seen didn't seem to matter. Until day 3 when we put our foot down instead of the driver! For a supposedly all inclusive camp we did one 13 hour full day safari with nothing but tepid water to drink! And for a supposedly 'eco' camp the water was silly little 1/2 litre plastic bottles!! What??? On the half day safris we were treated to (one!) bottle of sprite each. With only a cool box without ice in it no drink stays cold for long. When we had lunch in the park the food was the same temperature as the water... Tepid, often overcooked food that wasn't appetising. Back to the camp I have asked for a g&t before dinner - 'sorry we can only serve beer and wine' came the reply. (So much for the 'all inclusive spirits' then). At lunch you are only given water and not offered anything else (but they will give you beer or glass of cheap wine if you ask). I dared to be adventurous and asked for soda water - 'sorry we don't have any'. Every time you consume a glass of wine you have to sign a paper for each glass at the end of the meal. There is a relaxation area where I tried to go a few times to get cold drinks as the water in the tent never got refilled and there was noone ever there. So one day I ended up walking around looking for someone to serve me, only to stumble across the shack the guys live/work in which obviously made them feel rather uncomfortable. Coming back to the tent on the first night someone had lit candles and put lights on but they failed to do that on any other nights and it was a challenge scrambling round in the dark trying to find a switch. Kerosene lamps partly lit the camp's paths at night, unfortunately along with the smell of burning oil. The 'cooking experience' meant us standing by a hot stove watching a young sous chef put lentils and coconut milk with spices on to cook, then after 10 minutes serving it up for us to taste. The lentils were very obviously undercooked yet they were insisting that's how you eat it (yes if you want to get stomach ache!) I booked through the 'eco team' for an average of 500US a night including a driver and was expecting the luxury experience that was represented on the mahoora website. What we got was accomodation worse than a hostel with a few safari rides thrown in (which you can organise yourself for 50-60 USD separately, there are loads of offers around), food that was at best average, 2 types of beer, 1 white 1 red cheap wine to choose from and water. Where the 500 a day charge goes they could not and would not explain, so I can only guess...... Their website has such lovely pictures but the reality is very different. In fact the website even tries to fool you into thinking Forbes recommended this camp - by putting the Forbes name along with the Mahoora brand. Don't be fooled. We checked and Forbes never recommended this brand, or this low value for money camp, only the destination Yala National Park. Stay well away unless you can negotiate a 100US or less nightly fee as definitely not worth a penny more.

Dear TheHun76, Thank you very much for taking the time to review us following your visit in April 2021 and we appreciate your constructive feedback. Your experience is not what we aim to deliver. Unfortunately, due to Covid and the lockdowns in Sri Lanka, our staff cadre and suppliers were impacted. Thankfully this is resolved now. This is not an excuse, but a reality. We are proud to say we are now back on track with the domestic and international arrivals. After a thorough examination, we have found that we agree with some of your points but not all. We are using this as an opportunity to re-train the new and existing staff. Again, apologies that our high standards were not what you experienced. Kind regards,

I came to Yala not to stay in the lap of luxury but to find the best place to base to see and photograph leopards. Mahoora Tented Safari Camp Yala is perfect for that because it is close to the south park entrance, staffed by a lodging team and a safari team that is at the top of their game and provides excellent food as well. The driver and guide you get make all the difference. Highest of marks go to Guide Avinka and Driver Nishantha. They were excellent spotters and trackers and, when we needed to get someplace quickly, Nishantha is the best. Searching paultoyalaland will yield a trove on information; probably more than you want.

We stayed for one night but it was one of the best experiences in life so far.. Highly appreciate Avinka and team for the service provided from the point of making the booking. Everything was amazing from the welcome. We were served with nice food and we must appreciate Wasantha for being so kind and friendly while serving nice food throughout our stay. We had a separate jeep only for two of us and our driver Nishan was well experienced to give us a nice safari.. We were so lucky to sight so many animals including two leopards as well.. 😇.. Can’t forget the experience of bonfire and the candle light dinner with bbq.. Also the night walk with Avinka around the Yala border.. Overall we had a great and a memorable experience for a lifetime and hats-off to the Eco team for arranging and maintaining such a nice place..

I am not very much of wildlife person,. but I should confess that my experience at Mahoora has turned me into one! I was a bit apprehensive of this camping experience even after making the booking. They called us two days prior to the stay and inquired about food preferences and any special requirements. This was a sign of a pleasant experience awaiting. We were warmly welcomed by Avinka, the naturalist. He gave a very comprehensive description of our activities for the next couple of days. The tent had all the amenities for a comfortable stay. The ambiance created by the bonfire, the smell of barbecue, and the kerosene lamps was phenomenal. Enjoying a delicious five course meal in open air in the middle of a jungle was wonderful. I don't need to explain the requirements of a family with a teenager and a 9 year old, and they never disappointed any of us. The attention to detail in every respect was unbelievable. Hats off to Sagara who was in charge of banquet. The camp manager himself paid a courtesy call to enquire about our comforts. They did everything to make us feel at home. The wildlife Safari was the crown jewel of the trip. Actually, a ride on and off-roader would be so exhausting under any circumstances. But our friendly, enthusiastic, and knowledgeable naturalist Avinka turn it into a comfortable, enjoyable an unforgettable experience. His knowledge on wildlife and experience in tracking them was unbelievable. The stay at Mahoora was one unforgettable experience for my family. I would not hesitate for a moment in recommending the Mahoora Safari camp to anyone who wishes to have a true Safari camping experience.
