Three friends and I stayed at Kima Surf for a week or so at the beginning of March. We had the most amazing time! Our room was ideal, two large conjoint rooms with four comfy beds, and the largest bathroom ever. Perfect for four girls getting ready to go out to the Doctors House. The surf coaches were definitely a highlight, helping us build confidence in the early morning surf at Weligama main beach. And the food was soooo good, loved the big breakfasts and the all of the difference choices. Such an amazing place, and a lovely team running the place that make it feel like a home away from home.

If it wasn't my ticket back home or the availability, I would have kept on extending! Felt home here from the first moment I entered the beautiful colonial building. Learned so much and had SO MUCH FUN. Be prepared for the most relaxing fun time ever - at Kima you have nothing else to think about but waking up on time to attend your class. And maybe some stress about which breakfast option to take... ;-) Truly a surfcamp you never want to leave! Why? 1. The place itself is just perfect. Huge light and open restaurant, lots of insta-perfect chill out corners, big and clean dorms with good mattresses. Even prettier than the pictures. And don't forget the sunny pool :) 2. The staff and overall hospitality - this goes beyond and that's what made me feel like home! Also, they are very open for any feedback and I believe that's very unique in the field. 3. I think the most outstanding difference with other camps is the surf guidance. The quality, effort, attention and mentality of the instructors is another level! Kima doesn't just hire any available instructor, they have to go through the process and fit in the team. Same goes for the yoga teacher. Nanne who is managing the trainers is doing an amazing job that obviously pays off! 4. Well organised: things go as told. If your surf class starts at 8AM and you have to meet at 7:45, the instructor is there at 7:45 and you leave at 8AM. Dinner starts 7:30PM (which is quite challenging with such a big group!) and sign up for classes closes at 8PM so they can prepare the schedule and groups. Great job Kima, this is how you run a camp! 5. Food - I would have gained kilos if I hadn't surfed 4 hours per day.. A daily 4course breakfast between 7AM and 12PM, and the most yummy diners included. From curry night to bbq, vegetarian or meat - they do whatever it takes to make everybody's tummy happy. Outside breakfast and diner times a delicious a la carte menu for very reasonable prices. And 24/7 free water refill + coffee/tea. 6. The variety of guests and the way everybody mingles so well. We had some great party nights and also easy conversations and playing a bit of guitar together. I made friends for life and still miss them every day!

I've stayed in Kima Seminyak in Bali before coming to Kima Sri Lanka and I must say that I fell in love with the genuine kindness and helpfulness of the local staff at Weligama. Especially the chef and his personnel are wonderful people. The food is great and the atmosphere is that too in many aspects. I'm a beginner-intermediate surfer and I found that the sometimes the guides don't give as much feedback as in Bali. In Bali, the guide gathers everyone together in the end of the session and gives personal feedback to everyone. In Sri Lanka, many times the people just returned to the camp by their own without feedback. The best guides are definitely Mathi and Isuru - they really want you to improve. The rest of the guides also do their best, but maybe they haven't been informed clearly about the feedback. I find also a downside that in Weligama the two star level always surfs at a certain beach. Of course this is something that is done for safety, but still. The worst downside, however, is the attitude of the (western?) management. Many things are not included that definitely should be. For example, you pay a relatively high price for board rental and insurance. But then you get to hear from the management that the wax is not included and you should by your own. That is just ridiculous. I also heard that some of the famous perks for frequent stayers are not granted anymore, even though they are advertised. That is not fair. The management was also some days overbooking the surf sessions that should be for maximum 6 people. When sessions got full, and when the management was informed that not everyone had been able to book a session, instead of opening a new session they overbooked some groups squeezing 7-8 people with 2 guides. The management should know the level of every surfer (or at least the amount of people staying at the camp), it shouldn't be that the visitors have to inform them about overbooking. There are so many good things about Kima, and at it's best it's almost perfect. But the management should be careful with their attitude. However, I can warmly recommend Kima Surf for its lovely local staff that wants to take good care of you, the warm overall atmosphere and great facilities.

My girlfriends and I stayed at Kima for 5nights in late February/early March. We had an amazing room with a huge bathroom and ample space for 4 ladies and luggage! All of the staff were amazing, really helpful, friendly and accommodating. I was the only complete beginner out of my friends and absolutely loved my daily surf coach sessions and mixing with other hotel guests. The hotel put on different themed meals each night (the Sri Lankan Street Food was one of the best meals of our trip!!) as well as offsite activities and adventures that you can partake in at your leisure. The hotel quarters are so tastefully put together, and the beach only a 2 minute walk across the street. I would HIGHLY recommend staying with Kima and would definitely go back. The daily yoga sessions were also a highlight for us!
