Layback is a boutique surf camp and hostel, located in the heart of Weligama. With the beach only a few minutes away from our doorstep, surfing is part of our daily routine. Yet, despite of its buzzing location in the midst of local life, Layback is a quiet getaway for surfers and travellers. Layback opened its doors in 2017. Our vision was and is to create a friendly, laid-back and creative space for like minded travellers. A place that is intertwined with the local Weligama life to give our guests the opportunity to experience and learn about this place we are very happy to call home. Layback is made by surfers and travellers. We know the importance of a good night sleep, clean and stylish rooms and communal spaces for socializing, cooking and solo-time. But, Layback is much more than just a place to stay when you visit Weligama. Our tranquil oasis is a place to recharge after a long day at the beach, to breathe and relax, to be creative, to work or simply to enjoy a cold beer. We have developed and created our vision of our ultimate hideaway for surfers and travellers and hope to welcome you soon!

I found Layback to be a very great place to stay, especially for solo female travelers. There is a lot of space where you can work, inside or outside surrounded by plants and wildlife. The staff was always super helpful and friendly. I chose to stay here for about three weeks. I stayed firs for around two weeks and after that decided to come back again and stay a few more days. Layback is very close to the beach, local market and places to eat. Again it is a wonderful place to stay and I really recommend it!

We had a fantastic stay at Layback. The name of the place perfectly describes the vibe this place has. We stayed in a very nice room at the second floor in the back of Layback with a nice balcony! The team, Thilina, Linda and Dil Dil, is very helpful and will help you with every request you have! Boards are for hire and Thilina also gives surf lessons! Highly recommend this place! I'm already looking forward to stay there soon again!

Originally, I had planned to stay at Layback Hostel for a week. That one week turned into a whole month. The hostel itself is located just a side street away from the bustling city center of Weligama. One can reach smaller shops to buy groceries or the local restaurants within a minutes walk, yet due to the side street the hostel is still quiet and sheltered from the hussle and bussle of Weligama’s traffic. Food City, a bigger, more western supermarket as well as the local laundry service can be reached by foot in under 5 minutes. Weligama beach, a good surf spot for beginners, is just a one minutes walk away from the hostel. Other, more advanced surf spots can be reached by scooter or tuk-tuk. During my time, I moved rooms quite a few times, as Layback Hostel was booked out most days. Therefore I’ve seen and lived in most rooms they have. The double rooms all come with a private ensuite bathroom and reach from small cozy double rooms to very spacious rooms with a private balcony. The girls dorm has air conditioning, is tidy, spacious and can accomodate 4 women. All rooms are furnished and decorated simply, yet providing everything necessary. The hostel has a communal kitchen, which is supplied with everything one needs e.g. a fridge, freezer, cooking plates and even a smoothie maker. Water bottles are provided by the hostel. By far the best thing about Layback Hostel is the social athmosphere this place comes with. Thilina, the owner of the hostel is a local from Weligama, who can give you all the best tips and as a surfer himself provides surfing lessons for guests. Linda, originally from the Netherlands, looks after the guests, makes sure everybody is having a great time and keeps the place organised. Rex, the hostel’s friendly dog, Tiger the hostel’s cat and her kittens keep you company. Especially as a solo female traveller it was very easy to connect to people every single day. Guest were friendly, open-minded and from all over the place, creating a lively international athmosphere. Often people met up in the communal areas to chat, cook or eat together. One evening, Thilina organized a dinner for the guests at his father’s place, serving the best home cooked Sri Lankan Rice&Curry. Already after a couple of days, Layback felt like home thanks to Thilina, Linda and all the lovely volunteers and guests, of which several stayed long-term as well. For the solo female travellers as well as other travellers who want to join a friendly, social atmoshere, I highly recommend staying at this place. I will be back for sure!

Where do I start?! This place is amazing. Thilina and Linda are so lovely, warm and accommodating. The building itself is super clean, spacious and well designed. It has a communal kitchen with all the equipment you'd need, plenty of WC's and a lovely little open courtyard upstairs. I took a surf lesson with Thilina and it was brilliant. I felt totally comfortable even though I'm pretty rusty in the water. He was a great teacher, very informative, clear and calm, I didn't feel rushed at all. I would highly recommend a lesson no matter your experience. Layback ticks every box and I will most definitely return!
