The Helmeringhausen Hotel lies in the tiny settlement of Helmeringhausen in Southern Namibia. It was established during the German colonial era as a farm by a member (Mr Hubert Hester) of the Schutztruppe/German Colonial Infantry. Later it became famous for its Karakul sheep breeding and currently cattle and goats are farmed here. The Hotel forms part of the historic 11,000 ha Farm Helmeringhausen and is an ideal stop-over on the drive between Luderitz and the Namib-Naukluft Park, Sossusvlei or Fish River Canyon. Today the Hotel & Guestfarm belongs to the Basler family who are not related to the Hester Family; German hospitality is guaranteed and English and Afrikaans is spoken. Your Hosts Bjorn and his wife Katja Basler are both born in Germany; Bjorn immigrated with his parents to Namibia in the early 70s and Katja came to Namibia as a young woman in the beginning of the 90s and stayed here ever since. Katja was awarded the best Hotelier award in 2011. Hotel Helmeringhausen boasts a warm, cosy restaurant with exquisite meals and a refreshing swimming pool. Enjoy a cold beer or a glass of Cape Wine in our well-stocked fully licensed restaurant, whilst you catch up on all the local news or exchange travel information with fellow guests. There is also a cosy lounge with comfortable sofas and inviting fireplace. A hearty buffet breakfast, fresh farm produce for lunch and a three-course, set dinner menu are served in the restaurant. Farm drives and a hiking trail are available in and around the premises. Helmeringhausen Hotel also has an airstrip (25°51'46.21"S, 16°49'4.48"E), with pre-arranged transfers to and from the hotel for their guests.

We stopped here on the way to Luderitz for a lunch. So cannot comment on the rooms. Nice beer garden, but service is slow and inattentive. The owner sits in Europe and it shows. Prices are European Plus, which betrays a lack of competition. Felt a bit of a rip off considering the location. Speed point didn't work. We will give it a miss next time.

We stopped over at Helmeringshausen Hotel en route from Luderitz to Mariental. While the venue isn’t the most spectacular, the facilities are standard and the staff extremely friendly. The gentleman who checked us in, showed us to our room, took our lunch order, served lunch and cleaned the table afterwards. He was also there to serve supper and breakfast the following morning......with a smile on his face. The food is basic, and serves its purpose, and while the sausages were overpriced, they tasted ok. Their apple pie was enjoyable, but not as good as my Mothers’. In my opinion, the rooms need to be renovated and updated, as it looks like they haven’t been upgraded in 15 years. Both toilets in our room and our daughters room didn’t flush, which isn’t pleasant after a long days’ drive. The pool area was ok to cool off, however, fairly green making it unappealing to swim in. After viewing TripAdvisor after our visit, it certainly looks like there’s a number of other places in the surroundings which are more appealing the this one.

The beer garden is very nice, the apple cake is indeed excellent. The rooms are average: clean and comfortable beds, nothing special but they got all you need. The pool was quite dirty and there was only one sunshade, which is quite dangerous in the Namibian afternoon sun. Except for the hotel and a little shop there's nothing much to do in Helmeringhausen (different than stated on the homepage, there were no hiking trails according to the lady at the reception), so I wouldn't recommend to stay overnight if you have time to travel further. A coffee break at the beer garden would suffice.

We have been travelling South Africa and Namibia for over 20 years. From simple camping to expensive luxury lodges we enjoy everything. We are always looking forward to our stay in Helmeringhausen. We were welcomed and cared for friendly every time, the hotel and the food are fine, the hotel is an oasis in the desert. When we sometimes see how guests/tourists behave in Africa, it is not because of the service but because of the acceptance that this is Africa. And not a western big city. All the more we recommend Helmeringhausen because of its hospitality and yes, of course, the best apple pie in Namibia.

I have seen so many negative comments about his hotel. What a surprise we had. We actually enjoyed the one night we stayed over. The service was good, the food was good, the room was good. What more do you want. I would not stay for more than a night because the is not much to do in the area.
