Let me start by saying I had high expectations for this hotel. I started following along on their IG and reading reviews so I was super excited to book a stay here. The decor/look of hotel and what they seemed to offer was truly what caught my eye, but once we arrived I immediately felt disappointed before we even got to the room. So many things to be said. For what it’s worth, I don’t think the amount we paid for our stay was worth it, especially with all the things shut down due to covid. The room itself had zero to offer, no water to drink and not even a coffee maker like most hotels. I was honestly so disappointed by the look of the room, because it just looked so basic. Of course housekeeping was not cleaning the rooms during the stay, but trying to request items from them took forever for the items to even come. The fact that they charge so much for parking and their parking lot is an absolute mess should be a crime! I wish I took pictures of what it look liked. There was hotel property all over the place! Like heaps of boxes, towels, blankets, chairs etc in the parking lot. Not to mention it was super tight spacing between the ceiling and the floor and barley enough spots within the actual parking lot. Let’s not forget they charge $39 freaking dollars a night to park there. The only reason we did is because we got back to the room super late and trying to find anything else was an absolute failure. The beach/pool towels we were provided with one day were literally the same ones used for the shower and on a separate day we got different ones that were small and looked like they been in the wash one too many times! I mean, seriously? The restaurant on site was nice, but the wait to get a table was ridiculous. Even with reservations we still waited nearly a half hour to be seated. I feel like hotel guest should get priority seating to be honest. I’m also really annoyed by the fact that we didn’t get a welcome basket in our room when I was told they weren’t doing it at the moment due to covid, yet I see people posting their current stays receiving them. Also twice when we came back to our room things were super weird, like for one our room door was open when I know for a fact it was closed when we left, because I closed it. The second time when we left and came back our balcony door was open and the curtains were drawn back. I know it was closed when we left the room so I was a bit freaked out by that. I will admit that the bed itself in the room was probably one of the most comfortable beds I have ever slept in and that alone was the saving grace of our stay, otherwise I wish I would have just gone and booked a different place like initially planned to do.

Great ambiance, located in the heart of Waikiki which is convenient. I felt safe the room a d amenities were clean. One of a few hotels offering nightly talented musicians. The hideout has great food, drinks and service. Ask for Cenna or Aaron's section. Ashley (FOM) and team ensured everyone was practicing social distancing and wearing a mask. The front desk team are talented associates with a genuine care. Ashley? Joey and Suzanne MAHALO! My weekend celebration was AMAZING👏🏽 I didn't want to leave. The laylow is my favorite hotel to staycation and truly represents the brand. This stay was my 3rd 😊🤙🏼

It might be forcing it to think that trendy/chic boutique hotels pair well with beautiful Waikiki. At least that’s our conclusion after five nights at the Lay Low. Starting with what works: the location is close enough to feel within reach of the beach, even if the water isn’t visible. And the open-air lobby + bar is tastefully designed and furnished for a high-impact first glimpse. But overall, this was a relatively disappointing stay. On check in, we were informed the hotel parking lot was full, so we self-parked at a mall that’s almost-adjacent. After a day of travel, this was a 15-minute round trip I could do without, especially when paying the Lay Low’s ridiculous $39 a night parking fee (profit taking on the Mall’s $30/day rates). $39 a night to self park in a hotel is just gouging. (We found a different lot about four blocks away for $24/night and relocated there.) When we finally got to our room, it was immediately opposite the elevator and the view was directly into the mid-level of a parking lot. Not the vibes we had in mind, but reception was happy to relocate to a higher room… although it meant we sacrificed the preferred King-room configuration, moving to two beds rather than a sofa - a blow for a 5 night stay. Room doors are programmed to slam with a thud. That means you are waking up to neighbors through the night/morning, unless they actively restrain the closing velocity. There was nothing in the room to eat or drink. Tea & Coffee would have been adequate, and much preferred in a time when we were trying to avoid time around others due to Covid. Instead, you can buy coffee in the lobby, but only until 10am, which we struggled to hit, surely 11am would be optimal for a morning coffee? If you do get there before the breakfast + coffee shop closes promptly, be prepared to wait as one friendly staff member struggles to take orders, phone calls, distribute food and make coffee. As I waited, and waited, I observed multiple order mix ups, including our own (wrong food). Beyond the café, the Hotel did feel understaffed. A lot of the time I observed a long line at check in with only one staff member on duty. My phone call to reception went unanswered. When I called back ten mins later, I got through, but the request for supplies to the room was mixed up and we didn’t get what we asked for. The bar is very attractive and live music was of a high standard. But getting into the bar is more of a challenge than I’d like for a hotel bar – on average we waited about 45 mins for a space. The food, however, was delicious and the cocktails were too. The pool area photographs well, but isn’t particularly desirable to hang about, uncomfortably wedged between two tall buildings. The shop, bar and anything else that could add some energy by opening up on to the pool area was closed. Should resort fees be charged when basically none of the resort is functioning? The room had some nice touches. The literature was appealing and the ornaments tasteful. We found the bed just ok and the overstuffed pillows problematic. As I write, I still feel the kink in my neck. The bathroom was petite, only enough space for 1.5 people to get ready. Much worse, the shower drainage was so lethargic that two could not shower back-to-back because it would flood. That’s a long list of complaints for five nights. I think it all felt worse than it was because there was no real warmth at the Lay Low. If anything, some of the staff came across as a bit disinterested, if not a little grumpy. However, I can’t imagine working through a pandemic is pleasant and I am thankful for the people making it work in these extraordinary times.

This was the first time I stayed at The Laylow Hotel...boy was I impressed! From the modern design, hotel amenities, location to the wonderful staff, the Laylow hotel truly exceeded all my expectations. SUZANNE, the operations supervisor, definitely exuded the warm, aloha spirit that the Hawaiian islands is known for. Loved my stay so much that I booked my next hotel trip!!
