This is a really great hotel, and we chose it mainly because of location and a 2 bedroom suite. They staff were top notch, no issues at all. Parking was troublesome as our car was too big but that’s our problem! The rooms can use some new paint but really not bad. Was not loud at night and overall a very nice experience. Their bar and restaurant and live music was pretty awesome too!

Hotel's Favorite
Great rooms with lots of space after long active days. Live music by the pool is terrific every evening. The restaurant has the best food in the area. Breakfasts are super high quality, healthy options and tasty. Family style fish dinner at Mahina and Son's restaurant is a must. The staff are super helpful with planning your daily activities. Amenities are really terrific including the shampoo and conditioner provided, sunscreen at the pool, parking, beach towels and chairs. The coffee shop lattes are wonderful to wake up for.

I really lucked out with this pick. The vibe is really great. Staff attentive and quick. Sweet small pool. Cool people, quite a few young families with kids under 5. This was not a drawback at all. Food options pretty good. Great cocktails. It is mostly consistent with mid-century modern. Rooms were very good though furniture looks pretty well loved. Still functioned well. Location was great for lots of things but you do need to walk. I like walking…. You’re within 10-15 of a great long beach, decent snorkeling, great food options, swanky grocery store and then high end shopping if that’s your thing. TheBus is right on the corner. Only drawback for me was it is dog friendly and there were a lot. I wasn’t charmed by the barker next door who was quite until I opened a closet or washed my hands. Less charmed by the dogs invited to sit on furniture. I believe in 4 on the floor especially if I might sit there for dinner later. Overall- wouldn’t want anywhere else. Got a very good package deal with flight.

We are seasoned Waikiki visitors and have stayed at many hotels from 2.5 to 5 stars and AirBnbs. This most recent trip, we stayed at 4 places with our two young children and the Surf Jack was by far the best hotel. It was the most spacious (2 bedroom suite) and best suited for our family and friends that came along. Intimate setting and the kids had the best time in the pool and room amenities. The staff were always smiling and welcoming. The room was very clean and airy. Bed was so comfortable and we were sad to leave. The kids loved this hotel. If we could have cancelled our next booking without penalties, we would have extended our stay at the Surf Jack. We utilized the water cooler, complimentary daily morning coffee, sunscreen, ice machine and especially the parking! The next time we return to Honolulu, Surf Jack is our go to place now.

Staying at the Surfjack felt like a vacation destination in itself! I don’t know if it was the incredibly friendly staff, the stylish design, the upbeat-yet-chill vibe of the central pool/bar/lobby area, or some other magic ingredient, but it was tempting to forget the rest of Honolulu and just hang out there. It was exactly what I needed as my last stop before heading home. Highly recommend.

I've stayed several times for business and always liked the hotel. A genuinely nice staff and a great location that doesn't feel like a big corporate chain, the architecture is mid-century, and the public areas are well done. I love small boutique hotels with character and that's what Sufjack is. I came for a vacation this time and decided to splurge and book the most expensive room online, one of the two penthouse suites featured on the website. When I showed up, I was given something entirely different; this room should have cost nothing more than one of the regular rooms. or less, while it was on the top floor, it looked out onto another building and clearly was not the room I reserved. No attempts were made to keep my business (perhaps a lesser room but with a nice view and a lower rate would have worked). Also, the manager would not speak to me on the phone and didn't email/call to apologize. As I said, I've stayed many times before but I will not again - even when work foots the bill, I will also not recommend this to my friends anymore. if you get a great rate and don't mind looking out at the wall of the building next door, book it; just don't expect anything that's presented to you online.

Response from Lynette Eastman, General Manager at The Surfjack Hotel & Swim Club
Responded 2 weeks ago
Aloha Matthew, Thank you for your review. I am not quite clear about what you are not happy with because if you have stayed with us several times, you do know that half of our rooms are located facing the street and half of the rooms face the neighboring building. We are a city hotel, therefore no views are mentioned in our room types. Did you request a certain view on your reservation so we could anticipate your request? We only have 1 top floor facing the opposite direction. I am concerned about your comment that the manager did not speak or email you which means you did ask for one. Our personalized service is all about hearing our guests and ensuring their stay with us is enjoyable. If that meant put you in another room that you would like, we would do that as we do that all the time so I am not sure what the conditions were. Please feel free to contact me as I would be happy to discuss this further. Mahalo for your feedback.

Really enjoyed our time at the Surfjack Hotel. From the moment we stepped in everyone at the front desk was so friendly and helpful. Definitely some of the best service we have had. Special shoutout to all the staff, and also special shoutout to Whitney who was super friendly! A very good location and will be staying next time we come back

I had never heard of this hotel until my friend booked it. Right in the heart of Waikiki, this hotel is much smaller than others I've stayed at in Waikiki. The front desk staff were kind, welcoming, and accommodating of an early check in. A special shout out to Whitney! She had the answers to all my questions and was very helpful! The room was excellent and the bar downstairs is perfect for relaxing and having a drink or two. Waikiki can be very packed and intense, and Surfjack is definitely a good place to unwind in the middle of that. I highly recommend this hotel!

The SurfJack was a unique and fun experience! The staff was extremely nice and very accommodating! We were in town for a wedding, most of the wedding party stayed at SurfJack, we honestly don’t have a bad thing to say about the hotel, the coffee shop, bar or restaurant!!

It pains me to write this review because I’ve had a number of great stays at the Surfjack over the years and recommended it to friends. This time was likely our last stay. First, it is no longer new and is tired in many respects, with a refresh done here and there to fill the gaps. Secondly, this is a dog friendly hotel now. That’s great for the business plan and occupancy. However, it was a game changer for the look and feel. Dogs were literally *everywhere*! Fun for some, just not us. The barking dog on our floor was not good. Thirdly, we booked a one bedroom suite which overlooked a car park. Horrendous. To the credit of front desk, they swapped our room once we explained our previous stays overlooking the pool (lovely). But the fact that there are such poor rooms was news to us and can cripple your experience if you don’t check. Finally, we sought advice from the front desk about airport transfers in advance and received no response. Not terrible but not great, particularly when we have experienced superb service elsewhere. That the review is not worse reflects the upsides. Good price. An acknowledgment that we have stayed at the Surfjack when it was an instagram buzzing place and it is perhaps unfair to compare when people are just doing their best to transition to changing times. The evenings also offer a lovely experience eating in the restaurant overlooking the pool. And if you love your canine BFF, the two of you have just found a fun place to stay!

Response from Lynette Eastman, General Manager at The Surfjack Hotel & Swim Club
Responded 2 weeks ago
Aloha Njhickey, Thank you for your fair review. I have been the General Manager of The Surfjack since 2014 and was able to navigate the hotel through demolition to the opening of an original boutique hotel in 2016. There is no doubt that the hotel has changed over the years and through 3 years of a pandemic. The Surfjack is blessed to have remained open through 2020 and the following years that we all had to live through professionally and personally. Now here we are in 2023 beginning to enjoy a more normalized pattern of business, sort of. Yes, we have had to shift some of our focus to becoming more dog friendly for locals and visitors that has become a more acceptable trend in many hotels. But because our hotel is 112 rooms and everyone must come through our WISH YOU WERE HERE pool & cabana areas, you will definitely see dogs as their owners walk them throughout the day. You are right, if you do not like dogs, this is not the hotel for you. But if you do, the hotel will do your heart good as you think about your fur baby at home while on vacation! After 7 years after our initial launch of our hotel brand, we are older and more mature, but the one thing that remains is the personal service every employee and every department gives to our guests and dogs if they have one! You must have encountered an anomaly in not getting a response from the Front Desk about transportation. We look forward to future to refreshing coming later this year into 2024. Mahalo again for your review.
