We've stayed here several times and would normally give it a 5 star rating, but this time is at most a 3 as the room for this stay has been terrible. Stayed in a "premier" junior suite. Covid restrictions and renovations aside, the HVAC in the room was super loud and once the AC was turned on to cool the room it wouldn't turn off. When we got back from dinner it was 60⁰. When we told the front desk they had someone look at it and the solution was to completely turn off the room's HVAC and put in a space heater. Doesn't help if we want to cool the room a bit during the day. The bathroom is also in desperate need of a redo. The sink is cracked and toilet wobbly. Hopefully these are in the next phase of renos. Also, just discovered that the fridge doesn't work. Location, staff, bar, and restaurant are still great, despite being under-staffed for covid.

Hotel's Favorite
My wife and I decided to take a quick trip to Newport when we saw that the weather would be nice over the Presidents Day weekend. The Hotel Viking is always a dependable option. We decided to book a king suite room. The room was well appointed, modern but traditional and charming. Having the living room allowed us to put our son to bed and for us to stay up a bit longer. The service at the Hotel Viking is always spectacular and attentive. The renovations were unobtrusive. We shall definitely return.

This is a sad review to write because we actually enjoyed our stay here. The location is great, room was comfortable, everything was clean and the staff was friendly. HOWEVER, the way they conducted business when we checked out was completely unacceptable and the follow up was even worse. When we checked-in we were told that all of the amenities were taken out of our room because of COVID and we had to request them if we wanted them. Then we gave them our credit card for "incidentals" and that was that. We went on our way. Well the amenities missing from our room was basically everything you need to stay there. No towels, no robes, no blankets, no coffee. Nothing. We had to ask repeatedly for towels, only after going down to the front desk were we sent up towels. After getting what we needed we enjoyed the rest of our stay. But it wasn't until our second to last day there that we even heard the pool and gym were open, but only open by reservation. No one told us this upon check-in and therefore we could not get a reservation time and that was not available to us. When we checked out we were told we owed a balance of $100... when we asked what it was for they said there was a resort fee that we had to pay after our stay (never had to do that before) and when we asked what the resort fee included we were simply told, "Amenities." What amenities? All that we were given was a place to sleep. Our room didn't even get cleaned... even though we wanted it clean and did not have our Do Not Disturb sign up. We booked our travel through American Express and there was absolutely no mention of a resort fee. It was not mentioned upon check in. We were not told that the "Incidentals" actually included the resort fee. The hotel manager followed up with us and said that actually the incidentals is the resort fee... We are not opposed to resort fees, we happily pay them all the time. But we have never been told we owed a resort fee after our stay and we have never paid a resort fee to a hotel that did not offer a single other thing besides our bed.

We had a lovely getaway. I'm sure it would have been even better in non-Covid times. The restaurant was closed and the little coffee shop, which looked amazing, was also closed. When we checked in, the pool was completely booked for the rest of the night. The staff made a reservation for the next morning and extended our check-out time so we could have a leisurely swim (a whole hour to ourselves!) and not have to rush to change and pack up. It was really thoughtful and made a big difference in how much the kids enjoyed the trip. Everyone we met at the front desk was incredibly helpful and friendly. The hotel is very historic, but the inside is very modern. Our room seemed to be in a newer section. If you are looking for historic charm, there may be rooms that reflect the history of the hotel, but I'm not sure...you would have to ask about that. The room and public parts of the hotel are very clean and comfortable. The only real problem I had was someone, somewhere, seemed to be watching movies at an outrageously loud volume from 10:00 pm to at least 1:00 am. I got up at midnight to investigate but there was no sound coming from behind any of the doors in my hallway. I went down to the main desk and the man working there and I walked around a bit but couldn't hear anything. It may have been coming from above? It was just so loud and I couldn't ignore it. Finally, whoever it was went to bed and I could finally sleep. Thank God the beds are super comfortable. One thing that would have been very helpful is if the parking lot across the street had a sign. It's up a tiny road but not labeled as "Hotel Viking Parking" in any way. It also says, "Permit Parking Only" so when you wake up in the morning you wonder if your car has been towed. Thankfully we had no issues and were very grateful for the parking, but some signage would be really helpful. Because Newport wasn't very busy this time of year, we were able to use the car a lot and park very easily all over town. I imagine at other times of the year, it's not as easy. Hotel Viking is in a great spot -- so many things within walking distance. We would definitely stay again.

Spent a day at Spa Fjor and enjoyed a wonderful, relaxing massage from John. The room was beautiful and serene and I chose the oil he used to get every kink out of my very stressed body. Next was a lovely facial from Susan who was so professional and kind. The products were soothing and the scents helped to de-stress as well. My room was lovely and nicely appointed, even though the phone did not work, the engineer who came to repair it could not have been nicer! Christine at the front desk was exceptionally kind and accommodating, as was the gentleman who prepared my morning coffee to perfection in the lobby. Last but not least was Hyechong from Dining Services. She delivered my very tasty Bellevue Burger with a smile and with Covid-friendly take-out preparation. She was my server in the morning and I enjoyed a wonderful omelet, multigrain toast and applewood smoked bacon, delish!. My only suggestion would be to let returning guests know that the valet service is no longer in use. I sat in my car for a little while, waiting for someone to come. This info would be helpful and could be communicated when reservations are made.
