Hotel Viking captivates guests with its historic charm and an inviting atmosphere, although it has garnered some critiques for needing a refresh in both decor and maintenance. Many guests have called out the hotel's prime location as a highlight, facilitating easy exploration of nearby attractions. Service is frequently applauded, with the staff's attentiveness noted, though there are occasional remarks about valet and housekeeping services. While amenities like the pool and spa are appreciated, concerns about extra charges and the state of the rooms suggest that the value proposition could be improved.

EXCEPTIONAL CUSTOMER SERVICE!
The employees of the beautiful Hotel Viking went out of their way to provide exceptional service during our 4-night stay at the hotel.
In this post (but not completely post) Covid era, there seems to be a new normal in terms of hotel staffing ... no concierge; less frequent housekeeping visits; more outsourced services; and so on.....
However, the wonderful staff at the Hotel Viking met these challenges with smiles, enthusiasm and energetic can-do attitudes. They worked as a team, helping one another as needed to deliver first rate service to each of their guests.
As an example, I was most appreciative of the time and care provided to me by a young member of the front desk staff, Emily R., who helped me in printing several tickets that I had purchased online. Emily very kindly guided me through the process of e-mailing, saving, attaching, screen shotting ... quite an exercise but with excellent results I am happy to say.
Thank you to all at the Hotel Viking. We look forward to seeing you again!

Torn about loving this hotel
The Hotel Viking is a beautifully stunning property from the outside and the lobby!! The service here can not be beat! From the front desk to the valet service you were always greeted with a smile.
My sister and I stayed here for a long weekend and had a 2 queen room reserved. When we checked in we upgraded to the 2 queen Suite.
This is where I lost my love of this property - basically its a former joined room and the living room area has NO WINDOW and the bedroom only had a 2ft W x 4ft H window in the corner that looked into another hotel room and over the back parking lot. These rooms are also recently remodeled but the bathrooms are still in the 70's style and the wallpaper is peeling away already? The rooms were decent sized and clean.
Do make sure you review your room charges before checking out as well. They are charging a $30 "Resort Fee" per night. When I asked what this included I was informed it was for the pool towels, water in the room and at the spa, etc. What!? I now understood why I was never able to receive the cost breakdown that I requested 3 times prior to check-in. I insisted the "Resort" fee be removed from my bill and this alone is why I can't recommend this property and will not return. It's insulting to be charged for items the property isn't able to provide.
We did really love the location of the property as it's easy walking distance to the waterfront and other attractions - a great way to walk off the wonderful food this town has to offer!

Looked for a quiet getaway
We’ve stayed at the Viking on several occasions and were never disappointed. This year’s visit had some disappointments. The lobby area was under construction and was very noisy from workers pounding to rip up old flooring. One has to appreciate that short of shutting down, there’s never down time for that kind of work. In addition, we, along with several other guests waited well past check in time for our rooms to be ready. I think owners/investors need to look at housekeeping staffing levels. In other hotels I’ve seen teams of workers on a floor, getting ready for room turnover and making sure guests’ rooms are cleaned and restocked timely.
But with those first world problems, the hotel manager and the front desk staff went well beyond our expectations to insure our stay was pleasant and did whatever they could to address our concerns. Despite their having to deal with the loud noise, impatient guests, and other issues, they met ever challenge with a smile and a cheerful word. I give them a lot of credit given the working conditions. They are a class act. If not for them, we might not consider a return visit the the Viking.
Also, guests need to appreciate that it’s an old hotel. I compare it to the St Paul Hotel in St Paul and the Hotel Monaco in Old Alexandria VA. Old hotels with some character and maybe a few warts. But the character- and the hotel staff make the difference. We plan to visit again and hope we’re greeted by the same accommodating and cheerful staff. I give it 4 stars because the the current construction and lobby noise.

Room Tip: Ask for an estate room if just 2 people. A little small, but bigger than what you’d find in NYC.

4 Star Hotel? Hardly!
The saving grace of the hotel was the great front desk staff and the very friendly bartenders. Otherwise, it was pretty much a bust. We desired a charming hotel or B&B in keeping with the feel of the town but….looking run down and broken is not charming. We realize that having a full staff is a nation-wide problem at this time for most of the service industry but there should be a way to make sure that the guest paying $500 a night for a room (with tax included) has the trash emptied and fresh towels left daily. The high rating for service was simply the very friendly staff we encountered.
Oh and having some sort of a coffee maker in the otherwise old world room wouldn’t hurt my feelings one bit!

Terrible Management
We were planning a birthday night out and decided to upgrade from our 1 room to a luxury suite. We arrived at noon and were greeted by a manager who told us our suite was sold the day before our arrival. She offered us two adjoining rooms and a $100 credit. Had we known our suite was unavailable, we would not have upgraded. After a long discussion with the manager we were finally able to spell it out for her that taking $100 off the $400 suite was more expensive then it would be to pay for the two rooms($139/each). After much discussion she agreed to charge for the two rooms and then take the $100 off (great!) when we woke up the next morning two out of our party had early spa appointments and stopped at the front desk and checked out with the manager with the agreed amount. Me and my mother went down a short while later and did not know the other two in our party had already checked out. The manager was at the desk and when we asked to check out she told us it was $400. We explained we had spoken to her at length yesterday and she had assured us it would be $139 per room minus $100 credit. She then proceeded to ask who we spoke with and we explained that we had spoken with her and she said oh right I remember. Then after her discussing it with us again said “oh the other woman with you already checked out”. (Ok why when we came down did you try to charge us an additional $400). I received the bill from the two in our party that had checked out and it did reflect the amount agreed upon ($229). Then I got home and checked my card and was charged $467! I called to see what had happened and was told there was a $139 per night per room additional charge for incidentals and would be released in a few days. This was not disclosed to us at check in and was not charged during Check-in, but showed as one lump payment. I’m sorry, but we were only here for 1 night and had to speak with the manager 5 separate times. That in itself is ridiculous, but then needing to continue to remind the manager to do what she said she would is just awful. Very disappointing as the spa was great and the location was convenient, but we will not be back thanks to a complete lack of consideration by management. If you book a room, it should not be sold to another party the day before you arrive. Truly terrible.

Slightly disappointed...
Our family (7 people) stayed at the Hotel Viking for two nights in two double rooms on the former motel side of the hotel.
Pros: the staff was friendly and helpful; the swimming pool was fun for the kids; the bath products smelled great and were eco-friendly — all natural and in refillable dispensers on the wall; the breakfast place, Hill Market, had a decent selection of items and good coffee; the hotel’s location is ideal - you can walk to the wharf, restaurants, art museum, library, tennis hall of fame, etc.
Cons: the rooms were not what we were expecting — one of our rooms was dirty (there were cheese puffs next to the night stand, a pillowcase had lipstick stains, a towel had brown stains), but they moved us to a cleaner room. The motel side is a bit run down - the doors and walls are flimsy (we could hear our neighbors’ conversation and television clearly through the wall), the carpets feel dingy, the walls are scuffed up and need repainting, the sink area of the room was renovated, but the toilet and shower are old.
Conclusion: don’t think we would go back, but if we did, we would stay on the hotel side in a completely renovated room.

Very unsatisfied
Very underwhelmed with our stay here. We have stayed at this hotel many times over the years and this time our experience was terrible. Our room was 58 degrees upon check in and it took multiple requests to get someone to look at the heat. When they finally did they only attempt to fix it was a space heater being placed in our room. They said they could not move us to another room as they had no open rooms available. Our room was next to a stairwell in which they had a space heater plugged into the hallway outlet with an extension cord running out the door and into the stairwell. It felt very unsafe having unmonitored space heaters in multiple locations. We asked for extra blankets due to the temperate and they brought one. We had to ask for more so we could all have one each. Each time we had an issue they credited us a small amount, they never offered to not charge us for the room even though it never got over 64 degrees our entire stay. We were there for a birthday, the day before we arrived I received a text from the hotel and they told me they would add balloons to the room which they never did. We will not be returning to the Viking and I will be sharing my experience with anyone looking to stay in Newport.

Extra surprise fee
I was surprised with the $15.00/ day resort fee
They should have told us at first so at least there’s no surprises
Room they put us first was so small, I have to ask them to relocate us
Water from the faucet is yellow and smelled bad.
We have to request to tidy our room, if you don’t request-sorry.
Toilet paper also we have to asked
I can hear people soft conversations in my room.
Unreal

Grand old hotel in Newport, event staff need to be more flexible
We had our daughter's wedding in Newport over Memorial Day Weekend in 2021. Many of the guests stayed at the Hotel Viking. The event staff were not very flexible or accommodating in the lead-up to the event. However, it has to be pointed out that their staff during our staff were very decent and did all they could to help. The bell boys, front staff, bar waiters and managers, and those involved with the brunch we held in one of the conference rooms were excellent to work with. The hotel is very nice after recent renovations. Some suggestions - offer recycling in the rooms and lobby; put ramps on some of the existing stairways (if you have a luggage cart and take the wrong elevator, you have to go up or down stairs as the rooms on some floors are not on the same level); and fix the beer taps in the bar in the lobby.

Not luxury, not 4 stars / Overpriced
We were excited about our stay but we ended up being really disappointed with the hotel and their services. Hotel's location might have been the only good thing about it. I've been in historic hotels before and despite being old those are well kept, this was not the case this time. Hotel Viking totally fails at providing the "luxury" it promises. The furniture is old, stained (paint and watermarks), windowsills are broken, air conditioning broke down because it overheats. I've never complained personally about a mattress but this was the first time in my life that I've felt that the bed was uncomfortable and woke up with backaches the next morning. The hotel charged us a "resort fee" although their pool / fitness areas were closed for renovation but that was not announced prior to booking hotel (which makes a difference when you have a toddler in a hotel room and it's a rainy day outside). Their service was also extremely poor, for example their lunch / dinner times are very limited (don't think you can have anything to eat in the hotel after 2:30 PM for lunch or 9:30 for dinner) and we called the front desk multiple times and no one picked up. In addition, I provided them with feedback (as they requested) explaining my disappointment about the pool / fitness areas being closed and their lack of communication about it but they ignored me once they got my response. Hotel Viking is neither a 4 star or a luxury hotel.

Answer from Ken H
Not sure as they have been renovating it for a while. Best to check as previously suggested.
Answer from caverseau1
I know they are a pet friendly hotel. If your dog is used to being alone I'm sure there wouldn't be a problem. I have seen other guests leave their dogs to go out for a while. It would be a good idea to inform the staff when you're leaving and make sure they have a contact number.
