Detailed Reviews
Upon arrival at the hotel, the parking valet attendants are very helpful and friendly.
The front desk staff at check in are as brief as possible and not welcoming. It feels like they are doing you a favor. Also, we noticed that at night they do not answer the phone, even though they are standing there doing nothing and appearing to be looking down at their cell phones.
Room was very small, even though we upgraded. Not many outlets to charge your tech devices. Most plugs were behind things that you cannot get access. Our room had a nice view however there was a couch and lamp in the way, so it was very difficult to pull the shades down. Way too much furniture in such a small space. The showerhead was terrible. If you tipped it straight down, you were inches from the wall and if you tipped it up, the water did not come out of the top of the showerhead. The shower door leaked all over the bathroom floor. I notified them twice however it was not fixed before we left. Our bedroom floor was dirty upon arrival and I had to wet a towel to mop the floor. Also the sliding door to the bathroom doubles as a closet door so if you were getting something out of the closet and somebody opens the bathroom door you get hit in the head with the door like I experienced.
The wait staff at the restaurant were the most friendly people at the hotel. Upon speaking to them, we found out most of them were on an exchange program and were from other countries. We enjoyed talking to them and hearing where they were from.
The people running the boat and van shuttle service we’re very nice however we could never get a straight answer on what time drop off and pick up from the front desk. It seemed to differ from the drivers.
On a return visit to Newport, I would not stay at this hotel again.

They've done a great job updating the rooms and public areas this year. You can't beat the location, view, and outdoor areas. The pricing, however, can be on the high side and the amenity fee is steep as well. Make sure to take advantage of the amenities you're paying for.
The front desk staff were pleasant and informative, when approached. I feel it would be helpful for guests if they'd give more of an overview of the property & amenities available during the check-in process. I was unaware welcome drinks were included and needed to ask for them. And, I only knew about the shuttles because I googled it.
If you can, ask for a lighthouse room with a view overlooking the pool, it has amazing sunsets! I love the Nespresso in the room.
The self parking option is very easy, take advantage of the free downtown shuttle van & water taxi.
The outdoor pool & bar was my main draw to this hotel. They've expanded the pool seating area, thankfully. It's usually full by midday, so plan accordingly. They have servers that come around sporadically to take a food or drink order for you from the Pineapple club next door, which is convenient. The pool does tend to attract many families with small kids, so if that's not your vibe, be aware.
The Torpedo bar is a new addition this year, open late. Nice outdoor patio. However, drinks are a bit pricey.
Overall, would recommend and will return!

I definitely recommend this hotel for a nice weekend away or a family vacation. I went with my wife for her birthday and it was a great weekend. The room was beautiful and very clean. According to the staff the rooms and entire hotel were just re-modeled so everything had a fresh feeling to it. The pool was great and very kid friendly for those of you traveling with kids. The location is great, you can walk over the bridge to town or they have a shuttle bus for free every 30 minutes to take you to town and back. Overall, we would definitely stay there again. 5 star review for us, there’s really nothing bad to say.

Over 2 months from check in day i specifically called the Hotel reservation line to reserve my room because of some special needs instead of online reservations. I was traveling with an 89 year old senior and specifically requested to have a room on the highest floor possible, and a room that was quiet. My only request was very limited noise level.
Two days prior to check in, i called to ensure that my specifications were noted, i was reassured that they were and that we would be taken care of.
Upon checking in, we were placed on the 4th floor, in a connecting room. the walls were so thin that we heard the person next door burping and singing. I called reception and explained what was happening, so at 10:30pm at night, we switched rooms. this time to floor 9, being assured that the room was not a connecting room. The room was connecting, but no one was in the other room. The next day, at 11:00pm, we were awoken by the guests in the other room trying to open the adjoining door, the smell of weed overtaking our room and loud noise. Again i called and we moved rooms yet again for the 3rd time. This time to the 1st floor. In the morning i met with the Hotel manager in the lobby and explained to her all of the inconveniences that had occurred. She offered me $150.00 per night credit, total of $300. I said that wad unacceptable, so she offered 1 free night. Upon check out, i look at the receipt and see not a credit but a "Guest Room Allowance" charge of $300, and no other credit at all.
It took another 3 calls from me and speaking to 3 different people to have the $300 that should have never been charged to me reversed and receive a credit for 1 night stay. To add additional insult to injury, i purchased a T-shirt from the hotel gift shop that was supposedly on "sale". The store clerk quoted me my final price as $38.00, of course i didn't keep my receipt as I was packing, I look at my credit card statement and I was charged a $54.00 fee. I just did not have enough energy left to call about this issue, but it just shows the incompetency and inaccuracy of this hotel. For the prices they are charging, the hotel is not all that, the rooms are definitely not all that, and the service is simply horrible.

New management is piggybacking off of former hotels groups who have previously occupied this location. I would beware of this hotel as it is not worth the $500+/night price tag.
Major red flags:
1. Bad staff: Staff had no idea what they were doing. My group was greeted by a member of the hotel by stating that all of their employees started two days previously, and that they did not have much knowledge of the hospitality industry as they were mostly college students working there for an internship. Mind you, I stayed during the 4th of July. My group had a travel agent book a sunset cruise tour weeks in advance, and when we arrived at the hotel, they could not find the reservation and would not help tracking it down. We were met with "we do not have anything here, so I am not sure what to tell you". Eventually the manager found the boat, but the boat did not have a driver. After about an hour after we were to take off, the manager told us that he found the driver and pointed to the port where we would leave. He did not take us to the port or provide any details about who, what or where we were going. So we proceeded to walk around the port for 20 minutes trying to track down the boat. Ultimately we gave up and went to find the manager, who we were unable to find for the remainder of the night.
2. Security: You can just waltz into this place and go to any room of the hotel without showing a key card. There's absolutely no security in this place. Granted it is Newport, RI, however, again for the price tag, you would assume some sort of guest verification.
3. Restaurants: Just know everything will take 3x as long. Ordering a drink takes about an hour. Food was quick, but if you needed anything else, know your server will not be checking in on you until it is time to close out.
4. Rooms: Everything is very dated. Our linens were wet when we first checked in. They changed them after I asked 3 times. I think they were wet from the condensation of the air conditioner, but cannot be certain.
Overall, I would avoid. It is a shame because it is such a beautiful property.

We had a recent stay (Aug/2024) at the Newport Harbor Island Resort. We have stayed at the island property over the past decade under several different owners. By far, this recent stay was exceptional... recently, the new owners had put a great deal of money into refurbishing the entire property and it showed. Our room was 5 star... and room service was attentive.... and the A/C worked really well under very hot and humid conditions in Newport. The staff at the desk and in the restaurants were all terrific. Food selections for all three meals were great, breakfast service was outstanding. Poolside, the attendants had cold bottled water available and were helpful with setting up lounge chairs and cabanas. Additionally, the general manager, Mr. David Smiley, met us when we checked in and each day stopped to say hello as we enjoyed the resort. Great resort, walking distance (also free shuttle) to town, amenities and staff were all great. We will return for future stays.

This resort has everything you could ask for and a perfect scenic setting. Having said that, they are still working out some new open jitters but they care and are trying to make it right. Staff was very accommodating, room was beautiful but as others have mentioned we could hear the people in the next room crystal clear - like every word they were saying(they were loud though). We took the complimentary shuttle down to Bowens Wharf - technically it would be walkable but not ideal for us or anyone with little kids. We enjoyed a night at the Torpedo lounge fire pits, breakfast on the deck overlooking the Rhode Island Bridge, ocean and pool. There is literally everything there on the grounds. Nice little outdoor bar area with live music. The spa was fully booked but we would come back in the fall/winter and do a getaway and spa. The bar tender in the lounge was so nice and the reception desk people were very friendly and kind. Definitely going back.

This hotel has been recently renovated in excellent taste. The interior decoration has a neuvo nautical / resort vibe and the rooms are spacious and comfortable. The beds are super comfortable, the bathroom is large, well - lit and sparkingling clean. The entire hotel is clean, well kept and has beautiful grounds including a pool, plenty of deck space, fire pits surrounded by outdoor sofas, cabana style outdoor beds, large lawns with lawn games and Adirondack chairs, hammocks, picnic tables and fire pits, all pristine and overlooking Narragansett Harbor with views of the Newport Bridge. The pool staff was accommodating, and they set up your chairs with towels and umbrellas if you prefer shade. The pool decks overlook the harbor, and there is a bar and snack shack with poolside service of drinks and small plates. The drinks and food were excellent. We also ate at the Torpedo lounge the second night of our stay. There was live music on the deck, and the food was amazing. The salads and homemade dressings were really excellent.

We loved our stay at the Newport Harbor Island Resort! The new owners did a great job in their renovations and it is tastefully decorated to give a flair of the ocean while also modern and clean. We absolutely loved our room overlooking the little light house and the bridge. It was so beautiful to wake up and be surrounded by the water. Staff were solid and kind. We had fun renting bikes. The shuttle was great for getting in and out of town. Walking is doable and we did one evening for a peaceful stroll. We didn’t get a chance to try the spa but want to come back with our kids next summer. They have a kids club and yoga on the weekends. All around great stay!

My family visited Newport this past week and we stayed at Gurney’s. We had two rooms that adjoined and where there 4 nights. The rooms were very nice, clean and updated with plenty of room for 6 people to sleep between the two. The location was very nice as the hotel sits on a peninsula and is surrounded by beautiful views including an amazing sunset. The hotel does not have a beach, so if you are interested in this, you will have to drive to a public one and bring chairs and towels. The pool needs to be updated and the hotel packs as many chairs and people around it as possible. If you have a group that is there to party, expect to get wet sitting anywhere near the pool and there are a ton of young children and babies so noise is high. The hotel does not manage it’s occupancy so chairs are at a premium and you can expect to be on a waiting list if you don’t get there early. Unfortunately once you get a chair, if you leave for 15 minutes the staff removes your towels and assigns the chairs to the next guest. As for the restaurants, this is the biggest area of criticism. Both the outside restaurant located right outside the hotel and the indoor high end restaurant are managed extremely poorly. The outside restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner but because the hotel is fully occupied the staff are overwhelmed and the hostesses have not been trained properly to deal with it. For 3 days we would show up for breakfast at 10am and be told that they could not seat us because the waiting list was to long. At 10:20am they completely turned everyone away and at 10:30am while people showed up, the hostess just left. It was comical at best but extremely frustrating for someone that was paying for two rooms. Clearly these hostesses where not trained properly and the management should be blamed for this. As for the high end restaurant inside, this was the most expensive dinner we had for the 4 nights and definitely not worth it. There are so many amazing restaurants in Newport I’m not sure why anyone would bother to eat here. Although the restaurant was only 20% occupied, when we asked to move our reservation the host told us that they were fully booked and could not accommodate this. Again, the restaurant was empty when we were there so i have not idea what he was talking about. The staff lacked the ability to communicate and we had to find them several times to order drinks, additional food, etc. Definitely a reflection of the poor management and clearly not a place we would ever eat at again.
As for Newport, its an amazing place and definitely somewhere we would come again. Ideally we would look to find another hotel or rental that is in town or close to it. Unfortunately there are not a lot of hotels, if any, that have the location that Gurney’s has. But again, is it worth the money, no. I’m sure there are other places to stay.
