Travelers' Choice
Inspired by the insatiable wanderlust and rebellious spirit of Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt, the 33-room historic downtown mansion once owned by the businessman and scion has been reinterpreted for the modern era as a lively and stylish social destination. From a secret bar tucked into a corner of the sumptuous Doris Duke-inspired parlor to the specially-commissioned series of mysterious and moody old world still lives sprinkled throughout the foyer and lounge, the scene at The Vanderbilt is crackling with Gilded Age glamour and alluring eccentricities waiting to be discovered. The hotel features a full-service spa with indoor and outdoor swimming pools, fitness center, the Roof Deck at The Vanderbilt with amazing views of Newport Harbour and two restaurants, The Conservatory and The Dining Room at The Vanderbilt.

An eclectic, historic hotel. Some rooms have view of marina. We stayed in a room with a sitting area downstairs and a king bed upstairs. Mattress was excellent but headboard looked like something chewed on it (see photo). Armoire had low clothes rod and couldn’t hang dresses properly. Room had only one drawer in bottom of armoire. Temperature control to counter humidity was excellent. Room walls are thin and can hear screaming kid next door and doors are very loud when frequently slammed shut. Breakfast, lunch and dinner were very good. Very good selection of cocktails. Library and dining room are dark and dramatic while conservatory and patio are bright for breakfast and lunch. Complimentary parking for guests.

The hotel is a very mixed bag. The good: great location; valet parking in a city notoriously short on parking;beautifully restored first floor restaurant and common rooms; food quality at restaurant was very good; front desk service excellent. We didn’t use the gym or inside pool but both were located in basement and looked clean and appropriately sized. The mediocre: roof deck/bar with great views but terribly uncomfortable seating and zero shade, so useless on a hot summer afternoon; food service was great at main dining room for dinner but awful for breakfast in garden room (the kitchen lost our order and it took 45 minutes to get our food. They did comp our meal, however). the outdoor pool is the size of a large bathtub; there is 2x daily maid service but we had to refuse entry to one maid because she wouldn’t put on a mask. The bad; AC units in bedroom are old PTACs, extremely noisy and inefficient and run constantly; believe it or not, there is no coffee service set up lobby in the morning. To get a fresh cup at 700 am we had to order it (!) from restaurant and we were charged $5 per cup! Of course, we refused to pay this charge on our bill and the front desk attendant kindly and graciously removed it. But still…. This hotel, as an Auberge resort, can and should do better.

WOW! Is how I’ll start this. Absolutely amazing hotel with impeccable service. The staff was incredibly accommodating, the property is beautiful. Elizabeth, who works there is top-notch, she really went above and beyond to make our stay wonderful. We were checked-in while being served a chilled glass of rosé. Staff also gave us really great recommendations that were spot on. We had breakfast on the patio garden by the pool in the morning…and the restaurant staff set a beautiful table for my party of six, for family, who met me. The staff even came to turn on the water fountain by our table so we could enjoy it during our meal. Everything was excellent from the gorgeous room, to the service to the staff to the food. My husband left saying it’s the only place he’ll stay in Newport now!!!

Vanderbilt is beautiful period hotel with the true feel of historic Newport. It’s location is perfect for exploring the city’s historic center and walking to restaurants, shops and the famous Touro Synagogue. The hotel has an idyllic garden and pool area, serving meals in the shadow of a glorious church steeple. Other than the bells, not a whisper except the breeze. Roof top bar is like being on a cruise ship looking out over the gorgeous harbor. Our room had an enormously comfy bed and excellent bath. Food is prompt and delicious. Parking included, which is a major advantage in busy Newport. Last but hardly least the staff is incredibly helpful and truly friendly. A true gem in a gem of an historic city.
