Inspired by the insatiable wanderlust and rebellious spirit of Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt, the historic downtown mansion once owned by the businessman and scion has been reinterpreted for the modern era as a lively and stylish social destination. From a secret bar tucked into a corner of the sumptuous Doris Duke-inspired parlor to the specially-commissioned series of mysterious and moody old world still lifes sprinkled throughout the foyer and lounge, the scene at The Vanderbilt is crackling with coastal curiosities and alluring eccentricities waiting to be discovered.

WOW! Is how I’ll start this. Absolutely amazing hotel with impeccable service. The staff was incredibly accommodating, the property is beautiful. Elizabeth, who works there is top-notch, she really went above and beyond to make our stay wonderful. We were checked-in while being served a chilled glass of rosé. Staff also gave us really great recommendations that were spot on. We had breakfast on the patio garden by the pool in the morning…and the restaurant staff set a beautiful table for my party of six, for family, who met me. The staff even came to turn on the water fountain by our table so we could enjoy it during our meal. Everything was excellent from the gorgeous room, to the service to the staff to the food. My husband left saying it’s the only place he’ll stay in Newport now!!!

For Newport, we deliberately chose a house with history, even if the history of the house sounds very embellished in the hotel brochure. The house was a YMCA for many years and that's what it looks like even if you use the various staircases instead of the elevators. My husband and I both used the stairs instead of the elevator. Because of a locked emergency exit door on the ground floor, I had to walk down to the basement to the pool area and then took the elevator back to the ground floor. I don't want to imagine how I would panic in the event of a fire in this huge wooden house if a door with an emergency exit symbol was locked. Anyone who ever remembers the fire at Madonna Badger knows how hopeless escape can be in such winding wooden houses. Our room was on the top floor with a view of the water in the distance and close to the large public parking lot with a huge cooling unit. The small window did not light up the room. In addition, the wall color was mud green or brown and darkened the room even more. The niche for clothes was behind a curtain. A very simple white table fridge in the corner was particularly ugly. There was an armchair in front of the small window - but the window sill in the dormer was much too high to see anything. For a room rate of somewhere between 700 and 800 dollars without meals, this is not a suitable facility. The bathroom had been renovated with beautiful tiles but was impractically furnished. There was hardly any storage space. The bathtub was also a shower. The bathrobes were just thin, short and short-sleeved pieces of cloth. The swimming pool in the basement did not look particularly inviting; we did not want to test the water quality even though my husband usually jumps into every pond. Valet parking was OK, and we were able to use the bikes for free for our resort fee (seems to be a new rip-off in the USA). The roof top bar is nice. A DJ plays music, the oysters were ready but the weather was too windy for more than a quick visit that evening. As we were too tired, we ate in the in-house restaurant. The taste and price were OK. Breakfast is served in a beautiful winter garden, expensive but good. The garden with breakfast tables is certainly beautiful in summer. All in all, the house fit the style of Newport (we didn't really get the hype about the place anyway, although or because we saw a lot by cycling) but I wouldn't book the overly expensive hotel room a second time.

If you are looking for luxury in Newport, book this hotel now! You will not regret it. It is a beautiful mansion. Our suite had high ceilings, a four poster bed, a gorgeous bar and two bathrooms, one with a tub and bathing salts, the other with a powerful shower. The bed and bedding are dreamy. Service is kind, friendly and attentive. The location is great, quiet but walkable to everywhere. Bath products are high quality, bottled water is plentiful, there’s coffee and tea in the lobby each morning as well as a nespresso machine and electric kettle in the room. Every detail is thought-through, including providing candy on Halloween!

The hotel is housed in a very nice Georgian building in the historic district. Close to walk along the waterfront and retail shops.
It seems they plan some kind of refurbishment, which would be very welcome to make a luxury stay appealing.
We had the highest category of room : Admiral Suite. The suite consisted of a large living room and separate bedroom and a proportionally small and standard bathroom. Bath towels were small and far from a luxury hotel type.
The furnishings are contemporary with nothing specially attractive. Bed was comfortable and WIFI worked very well.
Staff was specially kind during all interactions, although the reception was understaffed ( only 1 person at 09:00 AM) and pressed to work as concierge, check-in clerk and room service order taker. Delays followed.
Breakfast is served in a pretty kind of greenhouse, very bright and looking onto a patio and pool. Menu is OK. A rooftop bar with view over the port is a nice detail.
Sadly they painted the whole lobby, living room, ceilings, regal staircase and hallways to elevators in very dark green. Very low lights produced an experience of entering a dark cave.
They have a restaurant with average good food but you will have to be happy with its walls, ceiling and fire place, everything painted black and very low illumination.
The AC system in the room went on and off as the thermostat indicated. Sadly and when on, the noise was so terrible that it invariably wakes you up. It was as having a motorcycle inside the suite. Sleeping with this AC system is impossible. They told us they plan to replace it in January.
In conclusion : it could be a luxury hotel if some changes are produced. As it works today the only luxury it has are the rates. I definitely recommend to decide upon Castle Inn instead.

The hotel is a very mixed bag. The good: great location; valet parking in a city notoriously short on parking;beautifully restored first floor restaurant and common rooms; food quality at restaurant was very good; front desk service excellent. We didn’t use the gym or inside pool but both were located in basement and looked clean and appropriately sized.
The mediocre: roof deck/bar with great views but terribly uncomfortable seating and zero shade, so useless on a hot summer afternoon; food service was great at main dining room for dinner but awful for breakfast in garden room (the kitchen lost our order and it took 45 minutes to get our food. They did comp our meal, however). the outdoor pool is the size of a large bathtub; there is 2x daily maid service but we had to refuse entry to one maid because she wouldn’t put on a mask.
The bad; AC units in bedroom are old PTACs, extremely noisy and inefficient and run constantly; believe it or not, there is no coffee service set up lobby in the morning. To get a fresh cup at 700 am we had to order it (!) from restaurant and we were charged $5 per cup!
Of course, we refused to pay this charge on our bill and the front desk attendant kindly and graciously removed it. But still….
This hotel, as an Auberge resort, can and should do better.

We stayed at The Vanderbilt as a family of 5. The website said all the rooms had been recently renovated. Although the accommodations were spacious our room looked outdated and did not felt well kept. The sinks were chipped, toilet seats cracking, toilets hard to flush, and furniture outdated (and not in a charming way). The first floor room had views of the parking lot on 2 sides and the outdoor dining area on the other side. We had to keep our blinds drawn the entire time for privacy and we could hear a lot of noise from the outdoor dining area until late evening. We visited another family members room that had been redone, which was actually quaint and charming. So, as I don’t think the accommodations were terrible, I definitely didn’t think they were worth the $1600 price tag we paid per night.

Attended a friend’s wedding in Rhode Island and we wanted to stay in a place that would set the stage for a four day stay in an historic area. The Vanderbilt hotel did just this. The facility is beautiful with a two swimming pools indoor and outdoor heated. The room /bed were comfortable. The bathroom was set up with lots of towels, having all the accessories and comforts one needs.
The staff from the moment you entered to the time you left were friendly and helpful and very hospitable.
I must give the concierge/planner Morgan a huge shout out for helping us with planning the many events we wanted to have from taking a beautiful evening sunset Champaigne cruise on a 1020,s mahogany wooden boat with Katie and skipper who absolutely did everything to ensure we had a good time. We hopped on board a helicopter trip with Birds Eye View Helicopters over the beautiful Rhode island (smooth as glass ride - shout out to pilot) to land us on Block island where upon we picked up bicycles to ride the island from
North to South. Morgan made sure we would not go hungry and packed us a beautiful charcuterie basket, so delicious we ate it all.
Of course Tim from Airport/Train transport and his lovely wife made sure we got to all of our venues on time and with comfort. Tim was not just a driver he knew every inch of Rhode Island and imparted all the information he could on the history and geography of Rhode Island.
We viewed the very famous Newport Mansions and Topiary Garden riding there in style in a 1929 Ford Model A Deluxe vintage car which was driven by Ken from Classic Car Tours. Ken was a lot of fun and also very knowledgeable on local history. The car could drive up to 6ph.. so fun!
Our trip was a great success and everything worked like clockwork without a single hitch.
I would reccomend anyone staying at the Vanderbilt Hotel and partaking in all of the fun things we did and left. We were sad to leave but we will be back,

Vanderbilt is beautiful period hotel with the true feel of historic Newport. It’s location is perfect for exploring the city’s historic center and walking to restaurants, shops and the famous Touro Synagogue. The hotel has an idyllic garden and pool area, serving meals in the shadow of a glorious church steeple. Other than the bells, not a whisper except the breeze. Roof top bar is like being on a cruise ship looking out over the gorgeous harbor. Our room had an enormously comfy bed and excellent bath. Food is prompt and delicious. Parking included, which is a major advantage in busy Newport. Last but hardly least the staff is incredibly helpful and truly friendly. A true gem in a gem of an historic city.

The hotel is centrally located in town of Newport on I thought a quiet street except the church bell went off every hour at night (not hotel fault). Arrival was nice though a drink was not offered. I found the room dark- dark motif and dark lit room. Maybe it was our room but bathroom while nice was very small (I guess as this is old building). Even with the lights on I found the room dark. Service was excellent, our air conditioner stopped working and someone came up right away. There is a beautiful bar but no standing, must be seated. They should have preferred seating for hotel guests. As we got shooed away from the bar for standing the hostess didn't enquire if we were guests. There is a very nice pool in basement with perfect temp water. We didn't have time to use the spa. I was disappointed about a 50 dollar day resort fee considering the room was not inexpensive. How about adding the resort fee to the published room price instead. I'm not sure what a 50 dollar resort fee is for. Internet? I can use my phone as a hot spot. What else? Luxury hotels should not charge a resort fee- unacceptable in my mind. It's a nicely located hotel though.

Do any of the rooms have working wood burning fireplaces?
Answer from KostasMavrogiannis
Newport, RI
Dear guest, the Grace Vanderbilt hotel has two wood burning fireplaces, one in Christy's lounge and one in the main dining room, where our guests can either enjoy with more privacy the warmth of the lounge or mingle with other diners in the dining room accompanied by the sounds of the piano. In regards to your question, one of our Admiral's suites has a wood burning fireplace, but for better functionality, we use dura flame style logs. I hope that the above answer is to your satisfaction, and do not hesitate to contact our concierge team that may assist you with any additional information.
