I wanted a mini getaway trip to Newport, RI and after researching several hotels I booked the Attwater because it offered free breakfast & free parking, both of which were hard to come by in the area. I found the location to be pretty solid. It’s located nearby the Historic Hill area and about six blocks away from Thames Street where many of the upscale seafood restaurants, wharves and tourist shops are located. It’s also a few blocks away from a small shopping area that includes both an upscale grocery store and Stop ‘N Shop (i.e. local grocery store) for those who don’t want to pay outrageous prices and/or have an outdoor picnic. The International Tennis Hall of Fame, Audrain Auto Museum and Newport Art Museum are also in the nearby vicinity. Unfortunately, the Cliff’s Walk and the historic homes are further afield – more like a 20-30 minute walk. (Note: I drove to the Cliff’s Walk, but parking would definitely be hard to come by during peak season.) Regarding the hotel itself, some will like it and others won’t. It’s absolutely not suited for anyone with mobility issues as almost all rooms involve at least one set of narrow steps. The bathrooms are on the tighter side. It also isn’t a full service hotel since the staff is only on the premises from 8am-8pm, but there is a number to call for emergencies and they frequently check in via text as well. Excluding the bathroom, I was pleased with the room size – specious bedroom, nice living room area, great decor – but as others have mentioned you can hear absolutely everything going on in the hallway and even noises from the other guest rooms. Had the hotel been busier this review might be very different! Breakfast selection was limited during COVID, but tasty – think: homemade yogurt with fruit, packaged granola bars, bottled juices, croissant, coffee/tea, etc., Hotel staff was personable & friendly and they provided some great recommendations in the area. Overall, I liked the hotel, but it will best appeal to millennials or those with a youthful spirit.…
This hotel is great! The staff is so welcoming, friendly and helpful. It’s extremely clean and they take the COVID restrictions very seriously. The inside is modern and new and the bed is so comfortable! I would 100% recommend this place to a friend.
The staff was very welcoming and helpful. The hotel followed all COVID protocol and was extremely clean. The hotel is located near the Newport Art Museum and walking distance from a lot of restaurants.
My husband and I decided to take a weekend trip to Newport for our anniversary and had such a great stay at the Attwater. Due to Covid, we have been hesitant to travel, especially with an infant but after lots of research and understanding what measures were taken by the hotel for Covid safety, we booked the King Suite and the room did not disappoint. The hotel definitely gives a B&B vibe more than a hotel and was quiet and peaceful. The room was huge, tastefully decorated with an extra sofa bed and fireplace. It was super cozy, with lots of light , big bathroom and the bed was very comfortable for a great night's rest. Upon check in, there is hand sanitizer and a code to the door for safety sent via email. We were greeted by the hotel staff (who were all super friendly! ) and quickly checked in, then the hotel followed up by text which made it so much easier to communicate and ask questions. This was also the same for checkout. The hotel is located in a quiet street but close to the center of town, attractions and had parking. Most sites and piers/restaurants are a quick drive. Please note, there are steps and a quick breakfast is provided in a to go bag for those who may want a quick bite o. We can't wait to return!…
We really enjoyed our stay, for the most part due to the very nice king junior suite the owners had given us rather than the queen room we had originally booked. The suite was tastefully decorated, the bed was extremely comfortable and the AC was extremely quiet. The few requests to the staff, which had to be made via texting since they have instituted Covid procedures that result in virtually no physical/visual contact with any staff, were responded to promptly. The only bugaboo during out stay was breakfast. We completely understand that the Covid procedures are meant to minimize any transmission, so all breakfast food was in small individual plastic containers (or bags with respect to muffins) and was self service. Our issue was the food choices available under the circumstances. Of course, we all have different tastes, so the choices won’t please everyone. Yogurt parfait was fine, a few greens with a slice of hard boiled egg drizzled with a poppy seed dressing was a big “no thanks” (at least from a breakfast standpoint), the muffins were good, the few pieces of grapefruit in a container was a bit sparse. The basic line - a better selection of food is needed. How about some mini boxes of assorted cereals (definitely a covid-safe way of serving), small containers of milk in the fridge, some mini yogurts, fresh fruit (apples, bananas, etc. the could be wrapped in plastic), some sliced bread (whatever type) and bagels that could be put in bags, and individual butter/cream cheese to accompany it. Please consider my suggestions. BTW, the back deck at the main building is a very nice spot to hang, but the chairs and tables were covered with leaves, so we couldn’t take advantage. Keeping that space clean and inviting is important, particularly under the current distancing procedures that leave the nice indoor lounging space somewhat unusable depending on the the number of people in those rooms. With all of that said, we would definitely return. Thanks!…
