After staying at the Cliffside for the last three summers in a row, I am so sad to say this visit will be our last. We weren’t aware of the recent change in management or renovations prior to booking this year, if we knew, we would’ve thought twice. These changes are most certainly not for the better. What was once a quaint, historic, grand victorian looking old mansion has now been “updated” into basically a modern wannabe NYC hotel. This was a B&B that prided itself on being a historic home to a Newport aristocrat. That has now all been erased to drab, cheap looking decor. The most disappointing aspect was breakfast. We used to look forward the the gourmet, ready to order breakfasts with fresh French pressed coffee the MOST when we would stay at the cliffside. Now it’s been replaced with “tapas style” tiny dishes that are not near the caliber of quality in previous years. The “hot options” are now sitting on a hot plate and were always cold when we would eat them. Certain other amenities, such as a bottle upon check in when you booked a suite and turn down service with freshly baked cookies have been done away with. Overall, the Cliffside has lost all of the charm and quality that made it a place that was well worth the money you spent to stay there. Either the new owners bring down the price per night, or go back to the quality that was there in the first place.

Property's Favorite Review
We recently spent a week in New England, stopping one night at a different B&B along the way. This was, by far, our favorite. The house is beautiful, the rooms are very clean, and the wine & cheese party is over the top. There was so much food that it wouldn’t be necessary to book dinner! Breakfast the next morning was gourmet and nothing short of scrumptious. If we ever get back to Newport, I wouldn’t dream of staying anywhere else.

My husband and I stayed at Cliffside for 1 night. Below is our feedback specific to our stay. Location (5 stars) - Cliffside is located on a minutes walk from the cliff walk. We stayed in a room on the 3rd floor and had views of the beach and the ocean. Atmosphere (4.5 stars) - It was very obvious that the Inn has been recently updated and everything was very clean and bright. With that, there is a lack of old world charm that you would expect to see in a Newport B&B. The Inn felt a little more like a modern hotel. Room (4 stars) - We stayed in The Turner Suite on the 3rd floor. The room itself was very large with a large bathroom and large sitting space. The decor in the room was quite interesting. The entire room was covered in wallpaper with bright yellow/blue flowers. The skylights added excellent natural light, however at 5 am, our entire room was bright with sunshine and made it very difficult to fall back to sleep. Breakfast (3.5 stars) - Given the price of this B&B, I would have expected more from our breakfast. They did have multiple options, however nothing was made fresh to order. They simple put out numerous small plate offerings for you to select from in a buffet style. The offerings themselves were very nice, but since they are sitting out, they were definitely not very fresh. Anything that had bread of any kind, was hard/dry from being out in the air. My coffee was room temperature at best.

I have just left this B&B after spending 3 days , both my wife and I thought this place has everything that you would want for a short break . The staff are extremely helpful and always pleasant , nothing seems to be an issue. The place is extremely well kept and the beds are extremely good ! The staff seem to be a new management team , they are great ( Jim & Josh ) well done keep up the good work . I have a special mention to Elizabeth who was just so caring and professional , coming from the hospitality industry she knows her business inside out !! If I had a negative comment I would mention the breakfast , when you stay in a place like this you would like something more substantial and not as sweet etc the self service just takes the edge of what is a superb facility. Last but not least the young chap who has just started a week ago, if he remains within this industry he will be running his own place before long . I would suggest that you go with his food recommendations ( Italian was superb ) ! If anyone is looking for the perfect restaurant with a sunset go to the Cliffside Inn , expensive but good !

Cliffside Inn has been beautifully renovated, however the breakfasts were a huge disappointment. When you go to a B&B of this price, you expect to be SERVED a delicious breakfast, in addition to having buffet choices that you serve yourself. How about a large bowl of cut up fresh fruit where you can scoop as much as you like, rather than 3 mini pieces on a toothpick? Breakfasts at the new Cliffside Inn consisted of micro sized tapas plates with tiny servings, making it very cumbersome to carry to your table. We have stayed at the Cliffside a number of times with the former owners and their breakfasts were outstanding!!!! Perhaps the current staff should check with Nancy and Bill for advice and maybe they will share some of their recipes. They have the answer sheet for a successful B&B and how to provide an memorable breakfast experience. Judy

While we're certainly glad to hear that you enjoyed Cliffside's renovation, we're so sorry that the breakfast did not live up to your expectations. Our signature small plates are a hit among guests across many Lark Hotels' however, we do understand that they may not be for everyone. That being said, we very much appreciate your feedback on areas of improvement––we strive to ensure that all aspects of guests stays exceed expectations and that certainly includes the breakfast. We're hopeful that you'll give us another try and we'll have the pleasuring of welcome you to The Cliffside Inn again!
