La Fonda On the Plaza enchants many guests with its inviting atmosphere steeped in local culture and history, despite some concerns over noise and the need for updates. Its prime location earns high marks from travelers eager to explore Santa Fe's attractions. While the amenities, including diverse dining options and comfortable rooms, are often celebrated, some visitors feel the costs are steep given the occasional discomfort with beds and noise disruptions. The hotel's cleanliness and service generally receive praise, though there are sporadic mentions of service lapses.

For more than 6 months we had planned to celebrate my husbands big birthday in Santa Fe as we love it there. We planned to travel with another couple. What he didn’t know was other friends and family would join us as well. With the arrival of Covid, it put plans in the air.

Ed, the sales manager of LaFonda, helped make sure we had a fabulous (low risk) celebration that was amazing. First, the rates at La Fonda were much lower than normal ( especially around Indian market week). Second, as we had 6 rooms, Ed upgraded us and it felt like we had our own wing. We booked the large suite which allowed us to visit safely. Ed even found a great source for a birthday cake and picked it up for us! That is service!

Ed also happens to be the Hotel historian and we had enjoyed a tour of the property on a previous visit so he did the tour himself this year.

The staff made sure the property was continually cleaned and came into our rooms only when we asked in case we wanted to keep it free of other contact. The restaurant was serving out doors and maintained space and hygiene. They did a great job with our first night surprise party. We felt relatively safe in the era of COVID-19!

This is always a special property, but this time it felt like an elegant and comfortable home with hosts that really cared about us. And my husband was surprised and LOVED our suite!

Dear 942LeslieD, It is great to hear your surprise birthday celebration came off so well! I know Ed was bound and determined to make this a special visit for all of you, it sounds like he pulled it off! Thank you so much for recognizing Ed's efforts, as well as all of the COVID-19 protocols we've instituted for the past several months. We are all trying to keep things as "normal" as possible, while still being extremely careful and mindful of each other's health and safety. I hope you are able to return again soon! All my best, Rik Blyth General Manager

We cant rave enough about our stay here. They are operating under reduced occupancy due to the pandemic and as such, we were offered a generous room upgrade upon check-in. We were very impressed with the measures being taken to keep the facility sanitized as well as the posted guidelines for masking and social distancing. The location is unbeatable with respect to walking around the plaza, etc. Cant wait to come back!

Dear MooreUSA, I am so pleased to read that you recognize the difficult circumstances we are operating under, and truly appreciated our efforts! It has been a very strange few months as our normal "high-touch" service culture has been transformed to a "no-touch" operation... We are very grateful to those who choose to travel in these unusual times and are striving to make sure La Fonda is following all the proper sanitizing protocols and other guidelines to keep both guests and staff safe. Thank you for your positive comments. I look forward to welcoming you back to La Fonda soon! Best regards, Rik Blyth General Manager

We live in Santa Fe and decided to do a night-away at La Fonda. I had been wanting to do this ever since we took a tour of the facility. If you are staying in the area, or live in the area, this free tour is wonderful. They go into the history of the hotel and feature much of the wonderful artwork.

There is really too much to say about this wonderful hotel. We booked a traditional king room which was fine for our overnight needs. The hotel has been refurbished over the years, but the charm is still there. Much of the original art, and furnishings have been repurposed, such as using the original headboards as art work on the wall.

The hotel sits on the corner of the Plaza so it is convenient to everything in that area. We were able to take advantage of mid-week, winter pricing that included a discount on the parking and free wifi in the room.

We concluded our stay with a wonderful breakfast at La Plazuela, the restaurant in the hotel.

Recently my daughter and I stayed here for a night, right in the middle of the pandemic. It was wonderful in all respects. The hotel went to exceptional lengths to be careful about the health of its visitors - from the big container of hand sanitizer in the lovely lobby to changing its room maintenance protocols. Parking was ample, the staff super nice, the location absolutely perfect and within easy walking distance of most of what we wanted to see in Santa Fe, and the hotel beautiful and historic. A special shout out to the folks at the terrace restaurant (La Terraza) who were so careful to be safe - gave us a baggie with our own sanitizer packets and a place to keep our masks - but also served a wonderful fish taco!

Dear avn87, Thank you! Both for the excellent review, as well as for venturing out in these difficult times to come and stay at La Fonda! We are learning a whole new way of serving and caring for our guests, so it is heartening to read that you felt our efforts were "exceptional". The Terrace Patio, where we normally hold all of our weddings this time of year, has become an amazing addition to our restaurant options. The outdoor setting overlooking the historic Cathedral is magical and the staff truly enjoy this new location. Thank you once again, we hope you return many times in the future! Best regards, Rik Blyth General Manager

It was my first visit to Santa Fe, NM. I am so thankful for my stay at La Fonda. I was right in the heart of the town. I was able to walk to the places I wanted to see. The hotel is exquisite! The center restaurant is so unique. There is amazing art on display to enjoy. Our room on the 3rd floor had a quaint balcony to enjoy the warm sunset. The attention to detail in the room was not unnoticed. It was light and airy and I loved the windows and views out. You can hear the bells of a church nearby with the windows open- it was so special. The service was exceptional. I asked for luggage pick up from our room from our personal concierge, she communicated easily by text, and our requests were easily accommodated. Everyone there was friendly and welcoming. We were here during the pandemic, all staff and guests wore masks and the rooms were so clean. I felt very safe. My son ordered room service for a hamburger. He loved the food! Every touch was so beautiful- the view, the service, the decorative details all make your stay so unforgettable. If you are coming to Santa Fe, you really want to stay here to get the full feel of this town! The connection to the internet was perfect. It is steps away from the Plaza. It is centrally located. We even walked to the State Capitol. We enjoyed the neighboring art galleries and restaurants. We enjoyed a drink on the top floor of the restaurant. It is such a pretty view up there. We felt so safe and comfortable with the cleanliness there. They have my highest recommendation. My teen son even noticed how special it was which is a huge testament. This is such a special destination. You want to stay at La Fonda if you are coming to Sante Fe! I hope you see the Miraculous Stairs if you come- so special! The staff can make any recommendations you need. I really enjoyed my first visit to Santa Fe because of the wonderful stay at La Fonda! I hope to return to La Fonda soon. This is a must stay place in Santa Fe!

Dear Gwen S, Thank you! Now more than ever, it is so important to receive feedback from our guests regarding how we are doing. The hotel industry has been turned upside down by the pandemic and La Fonda is certainly no exception. We have had to change so many of our normal operational procedures, but it sounds from your comments that we haven't lost our hospitality spirit! I'm so glad you enjoyed your stay with us, more importantly, that we were able to please a teenager! Although not every business or restaurant is fully open in Santa Fe yet, every week seems to bring more good news and eased restrictions. We look forward to welcoming you back in the future, when maybe things will be more "normal" and museums, etc, will be open as well. All my best, Rik Blyth General Manager

La Fonda is the best hotel for location near the plaza in Santa Fe. The hotel has an old world charm mixing Southwest and some Art Deco in a way that kind of works. The hotel is comfortable and not pretentious. You will be comfortable in casual attire throughout the common spaces. The staff are friendly, helpful and courteous.
Rooms are very small but well enough appointed. In room coffee/espresso service is top notch and it’s a nice touch to have free chilled water bottles as well as turn down service. Bathrooms are stylish old school with sliding doors. The worst part of the hotel is the views. Most of the room fave an interior view of the roof and AC units which is too bad when you are in a city as beautiful as Santa Fe. Would definitely stay here again when in the area if the price is right.

When you realize the best part of your stay was the outstanding service by the parking garage crew, something is amiss. Their attitude was outstanding our entire stay but 3 separate trips to the front desk were required to get our parking pass straight. All this pleasure for just $30 per day!! Finally one of the garage attendants took on the situation all by himself and came to our room on the 4th floor to drop our pass off in person. Thank you guys!! If only the rest of the staff was as efficient. The front desk crew was lousy (didn't seem to care) in this garage matter plus check-in was poor. No luggage racks available unless valet apparently. We also were assured at check-in that there would be no problem eating at the restaurant and reservations were not needed. Wrong! We could not eat there this night when we went down at 6:00. The lady at the restaurant with the reservations was indifferent (I would say 'burned out' is a better term) and not friendly. We ordered room service and it arrived luke warm with no way to heat it, plus where do you put the food?? No tables or decent flat surfaces. Big costly mistake. The room itself was very clean and had a large TV with an average amount of channels. The bathroom was extremely nice but the shower was very awkward to enter/exit due to the ledge (see photo). The beds were fine but the a/c blows right on them at night (very typical). The room was quiet overall and the ice machine was convenient down the corridor. We give the room 4 stars but definitely not 5. Despite our issues, the wonderful looking lobby, top dollar shops, and overall atmosphere are delightful. Of course the location is unreal where you can walk to anything. We were successful in finally getting a restaurant reservation for our last night and that helped make up for the first night. Also the French bakery is unreal. We gave them 5 stars in a separate review. Would we come back?? Possibly, way off in the future, as the desk crew will most likely be different and the garage situation would hopefully not occur again. We also would make reservations at the restaurant and never order room service. Some things WE can improve on but ALL the desk and restaurant staff needs to be more caring. Even at check-out a new different front desk person than prior didn't care about the garage situation when I brought it up again. Perhaps an adjustment for the $30 per day charge, like one day free or evn $10 off?? Nope, basically SEE YA!! This should have been a 4 or 5 star review but no way is that what we actually experienced. Unfortunate, and definitely bad timing.

Dear Hooked_on_travel77, I'm very sorry to read about your poor experience (other than with our garage staff!) while staying with us recently. Please accept my apologies, indifferent service is certainly not what we are known for. I have copied your comments to both the Front Desk Manager as well as the Restaurant Manager and I'll be following up personally to see these issues are addressed and corrected. I believe one of our new staff members at the Front Desk may have been confused about restaurant reservations, while we do not take reservations for breakfast or lunch, they are always recommended for dinner. I regret you were given the wrong information. I do hope you return in the future to give us another chance to show you true La Fonda hospitality. Please contact me personally and I will assure you of a most pleasant visit. All my best, Rik Blyth General Manager

BLUF- laughable that this is called a luxury hotel. The suites on the Terrace are beautiful (not worth the cost but they are beautiful- this review is for the 99% of the rest of the hotel).

I had to switch rooms twice due to loud electrical sounds - after I was switched once they moved us to the room next to the elevator shaft, which was the loudest. The third room was fine. Also, the first room had hair and stains on the sheets, broken lamp shade, broken shower head making water spray all over the floor. It was disgusting. I've stayed at better hotels that were 1/3 the price. The second room had trash in the trash can from the last guest and a half drank bottle of water was left in the fridge.

The cherry on the sundae was when we checked out, I asked to see the receipt for my room (because it was emailed but not given to me to review, a first I've had with that at a hotel). I said "I just want to make sure parking was taken off because the manager said it would be given our terrible experience." Front desk person: "It was." I opened my email, opened the attachment, parking charge is on there. Are you kidding me? Also, I was charged for 2 room service breakfasts when I used a voucher from my friend, the bride, who had a few extra free breakfast vouchers. When I called to order the food I ensured I could use it, and when the food was delivered I gave it to the guy and he confirmed I could use it. Front desk guy begins talking in circles about how that is only for the Terrace suite guests and I couldn't use it, so I have to pay for breakfast. Um, no. I asked multiple times if I could use it and they said yes. He starts getting flustered and said "IF the restaurant 'can confirm' (confirm what? he is accusing me of lying?) then he will 'see about getting it removed.') . NO. That's not how it works. I do not give authorization for that amount to be charged to my card. There is no IF. Seriously, you call this a 4 star hotel? ? Honestly I am SHOCKED.

A254, I'm sorry to read you were so dissatisfied with your recent stay at La Fonda... as well as perplexed that your experience was so vastly different than the majority of our guests. I guess the old saying "when it rains, it pours" was proven true. I've spoken to the gentleman who checked you out and he did indeed make the adjustments on your breakfast charges. I shared your observations with our staff and we will redouble our efforts to continue making La Fonda the best historic hotel in the Southwest. Again, my apologies your visit was so disappointing. We enjoyed a 5-day stay at the La Fonda and had a wonderful experience there. It’s the most historic place you can stay in Santa Fe, has first class accommodations and service, and is located across from the town square, and within walking distance of so many restaurants, shops and attractions. I think we ended up using our rental car just one time during our stay. The typical rooms here aren’t the most spacious, but there’s no better place to stay if you want the complete Santa Fe experience. Couple of quick tips: 1) If you want a quiet room or like to sleep with the windows open, avoid rooms located on the Old Santa Fe Trail side of the hotel. The street noise can be loud especially during Friday and Saturday nights. 2) When parking in the La Fonda garage ($20 per day for guests), head straight to the 2nd level. It has more parking spaces and more room for each parking spot. The street level of the garage doesn’t have a lot of spaces, and they’re very narrow.

Yes, there is an elevator. We were upgraded to the La Terreza suite area and even had our own elevator and concierge on our floor. It was a wonderful experience staying at the La Fonda and we'd love to return. If having an elevator is an issue for you, I suggest mentioning and commenting this when you book a reservation to be sure the hotel will accomodate your stay to your liking.

Hi Peggy, yes La Fonda is very dog friendly. We do have a fee of $50 per night, 20% of which is donated to the Espanola Humane Shelter. Per State Law at this time we cannot allow dogs in our restaurants, only exception are ADA Service Dogs (not emotional support or comfort dogs). Hope this helps! Rik Blyth General Manager

Hard to say with all of this COVID going on, but we're starting to open up more and more each week. I would say give the hotel a call just to confirm what they're doing for music so you don't make an unnecessary trip. 800-523-5002. 505.982.5511.
