Being seniors, we love to stay at Homewood Suites on our numerous roadtrips because of the very filling breakfasts each morning, and the "social mixers" Monday - Thursdays with appetizers/small dinners and beer/wine. This hotel had a friendly staff, smaller but inviting pool (though no hot tub) and beautiful paintings, friendly maids etc; however one of the BEST things was that walking through the parking lot, you are at another Hilton, Buffalo Thunder Hilton and Casino! You have all the priveleges at this Hilton and they have a very inviting pool, hot tub , a marvelous lobby and escalator right down to the casino! We even hit a good sized jackpot. Downside for some may be that it's a good 20-30 minute drive (depends on traffic/time of day) from Santa Fe proper, but no problem for us. Highway 285 (??) is right inn front of the hotel, and also is the one you take for the 1 hour 20 minute drive to Taos, which is a most lovely drive, as you are driving right alongside the Rio Grande river, and going through some mighty quaint little towns. Best advise once you get into Taos, go to the Visitors Center as you get into town; good maps, good advice on what to see, etc. Of course inboth Santa Fe and Taos, I've seen more art galleries/art studios than I have in my lifetime. Kit Carson's home and museum is interesting.

There are two room options - in the hotel or in a casita. The casitas have 8 rooms per casita, 4 upstairs with no elevator, 4 downstairs, all on the same side of the casita. The rooms had plenty of space but both the living room and bedroom had floor AC/heating units that blow directly on you (no central heat/air). The rooms are fairly well sound proofed - only heard people at pool at 11:30pm, never heard our neighbors. Clean room, all kitchen appliances worked. you can use the facilities at the nearby Hilton property (pool, spa, fitness center). Be advised the hotel is 10 miles north of Santa Fe near an Indian Casino (part of the Hilton) so long commute if you were planning to spend lots of time in Santa Fe. I called the property twice before we arrived for clarification on type of room and trying to change reservation dates, and both times, the customer service reps were short tempered and combative. When we arrived, front desk was good but customer service was non-existent for the complimentary breakfast. Lack of dishes both mornings, no bakery or fruit items the second morning. When I asked for help, I was met with a grunt from the customer service rep in the kitchen.

If you are looking for a really great place to stay...you've found it. Location is wonderful if you want to spend a while at the Buffalo Thunder Casino...just a short walk. The property is beautiful. The rooms very comfortable and clean. The kitchen facilities are complete including a full-size refrig and a small stove. More than adequate. Best of all is the amazing customer service. Of special note was Ms. Jody Bustos who had the most fantastic customer service skills. Can't wait to stay there again next year.
