This hotel was established in 1859 and recently refurbished. It reopened in June of 2020. The lobby is magnificent. They even left old details like a row of phone booths. The detail is very fine. The rooms are very large and comfortable. Ours had a balcony overlooking the swimming pool. Checking in was easy. The Menger Bar is also magnificent. The Menger bar is where Teddy Roosevelt recruited his Rough Riders It’s pretty much a luxury hotel and the convenience to downtown San Antonio makes it a gem.

Dear josephgal, Thank you for taking the time to share your comments on TripAdvisor. I was so pleased to hear about or associates, the vintage photos that line our lobby corridor and the pool. Please know that I share your love of our hotel coffee. It makes my morning and its as full bodied and smooth as Starbucks. Thank you for braving the headlines to visit us. Beautiful, well kept historic hotel, actually one of the attractions San Antonio has to offer. Rich in history (Teddy Roosevelt started his Rough Riders here), and other presidents have stayed overnight. Took me back in time. Refreshing to find such a welcoming, polite and hospitable staff, especially Ramon and the rest of the front desk team. After long, hot walks, I always looked forward to the ice cold, complimentary water bottles offered in the lobby upon request. The building is literally next door to The Alamo. Staying at the Menger truly was the highlight of my trip to San Antonio.

Dear Martinlra, Thank you for taking the time to post your comments. I was so pleased that you enjoyed your visit and thank you for your kind mention of Ramon and our employees. Ramon is one of a kind and he is responsible for setting the culture here at the hotel. Like you, I often find myself walking the lobby and viewing all the great artifacts and photos of past dignitaries. We look forward to the completion of Alamo Plaza renovation early next year which will place us at the doorstep of Texas's most visited landmark. Thank you for braving the headlines to visit our hotel. We look forward to welcoming you back in the not too distant future. Cheers,

I recently wrote a very unfavorable review for this Hotel. That was before General Manager Garvin O’Neil stepped up to the plate and started knocking the ball out of the park. Evidently he read our previous review because he made sure his staff worked the problem and addressed every issue. We had moved from our room to a suite — he comped the additional charge. He fixed the parking issue and when we returned from our wedding ceremony, there was chilled champagne and chocolate covered strawberries for my new husband and me (well, I get the strawberries). Nicely done and a very nice way to recover disappointed guests and save their wedding weekend.

Thank you for your kind feedback and I was so pleased you reached out to me personally to express your concerns about your accommodations for such a special weekend. You had every reason to expect better and I sincerely apologize that you were prompted to contact me in the first place. I loved the wedding photos of the ceremony at the River Walk and as newlyweds in our Victorian Lobby. It was truly Texan of you in your beautiful wedding dress and colorful cowboy boots! We look forward to your return to the Menger for your anniversary celebrations. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me personally at (214) 223.4361 or via email at goneil@mengerhotel.com if I can be of service in the future. Cheers, Garvin O'Neil General Manger

Beautiful place and amazing history. The bar is so cool and a must see. The rooms are old but really nice. The restaurant is also great and not too pricy, I highly recommend this place plus it’s walking distance to a lot of great places in San Antonio.

dear Coreymol, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback on TripAdvisor. I was so pleased that you enjoyed your stay and that you enjoyed our restaurant. The Menger is a unique property with the challenge of providing a quality guest room while preserving the rich history and ambiance that sets us apart from a "cookie-cutter" alternative. Please know that we appreciated you visiting us during this COVID-19 challenge. The Menger's "Clean Stay Promise" is a program that we have implemented that adopts the CDC protocols for making sure our guest's health and safety is our number one priority.
