The JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort & Spa is often commended for its friendly service and serene atmosphere, with modern rooms set amidst tranquil grounds that are perfect for wildlife watching. While the vast array of amenities, including a lazy river and waterpark, are a hit with guests, some feel the overall value is diminished due to high prices and additional fees.
Travelers consistently praise the resort's cleanliness, but opinions on room service vary, pointing to occasional lapses in cleanliness and turnover.

Detailed Reviews
I convinced our friends to make the trek to the JWMSAHCRS to spend this past Saturday and Sunday, with our kids and family. I was so disappointed with what we stumbled on this past weekend, and so unlike what I’ve experienced in the past at this property.
First, we went to our room and opened the refrigerator, only to find several open drinks and a ‘doggy bag’ of food from a restaurant which smelled repulsive. A housekeeping miss!
Second, our room wasn’t thoroughly cleaned as there was a used wash clothe left in the shower. A housekeeping miss!
Third, we went out to one of the several fire places outside with the kids to hang out. When we got outside, there was a group of people smoking weed on the other side of the fire place who I kindly confronted and asked to move their shenanigans somewhere else. I didn’t want my kids exposed to that, especially having them think it’s okay to behave that way. They reluctantly left. When we sat down, someone had spilled a clear drink on one of our seats and there were dirty plates and glasses scattered all over the fireplace and surrounding tables. Numerous hotel staff walked by, looked and moved on until I asked for it to be removed. Even after asking, nobody removed the dirty plates or mess left behind. They ignored my request as we waited for better than 45 minutes and nobody returned.
Fourth, when walking back to the room, my daughter stepped on a wine glass on its side in the hallway. I’m glad she wasn’t cut badly as a result.
Fifth, we took the kids to the pool where we sat down for a drink and every drink we ordered they didn’t have except for a select few (maybe 3 options) because they had just opened today for the first time since last summer. ****If you don’t have the supplies to support the menu you are offering, then keep it closed! I witness numerous unhappy people at the pool bar today.****
Sixth, the hotel was [extremely] crowded and there isn’t enough staff to support the guest(s) needs, or manage the clean up after guests. Extremely deficient in this area!
I recommend that management makes the necessary changes to remedy these issues. More people need to be inside and outside monitoring people, managing their needs and ensuring the property is kept clean.
This is a J.W. Marriott, not a two (2) star hotel! I’ve been to many J.W.’s and this had to be the worst experience I’ve had, solely for the reasons listed above.
For the recorded; I do want to say that all of our food and service was exceptional. Everyone was, and has always been, extremely attentive and professional.

I'll note we came the first weekend it reopened in June and back again for July 4th weekend. For this review I'll concentrate on the July 4th trip, but both were up to the usual standards at the hotel. We have been several times in year past.
Food: Cibalo Moon, High Velocity, Rivertop and 18 oaks were all open this first weekend in July, though note menu selections are reduced. They no longer do paper menus to help with reduced direct contact, just scan a QR code / save link on the phone for your stay. Based on the current situation, we elected to take meals to go or eat outside this trip. Indoor is open with 50% or less tables being seated. At High Velocity, the to-go option worked very well with great signage. Even for breakfast at Cibalo moon you could do a "buffet to go" where workers served you items (with masks and gloves of course) and you eat outside, in the giant lobby, or back in your room. Or you could just buy prepackaged items like a small store.
Room: Upgraded to an awesome suite so thanks to the property for recognizing my status and continued loyalty. Housekeeping offered on request when no guest is in the room. We just elected to get towels, etc via the app delivered so we felt more comfortable with our room.
Safety Measures: Signs are everywhere to social distance and reminder of the current ordinances. Masks available at check-in and even outside before you enter.
Pool Area: Appreciated that with reduced capacity (50%) this did make the pool area more enjoyable. It was easier to find a chair and with so many options including the main pool, sand/family pool, lazy river, and water slides, it was fairly easy to social distance. Chairs have been removed to allow this spacing in groups. All employees wore masks inside and out. Even taped lines at the slides to remind riders, and most people paid attention.
Overall, obviously this year our visits were different, but given the situation and several missed trips here and internationally in the last few months, it was a much needed getaway for our family with 2 kids stuck at home a lot.

We had a fantastic family vacation! It seems like many of the issues described from the spring are being corrected. We stayed 4 nights and there were plenty of valets available, but we opted for self parking and always found a spot. The golf cart shuttle was running most of the time, but we also figured out you can enter the conference center at the bottom of the hill and take the escalators up to the lobby which was quick and easy.
We were able to check in and get a room around 2pm with no issue on a Friday afternoon. Daily housekeeping was still unavailable but we saw housekeeper training while there so it looks like they are working to rectify that. We did have to ask for extra toilet paper but it came within 10 minutes. All common areas were clean and they had landscaping crews hard at work on the gardens.
River Bluff was popular but not overcrowded and seemed to be appropriately staffed to include cocktail servers. My daughter loved the daily activities and nightly s’mores with many other kids.
I golfed both courses at the TPC and was pleased with the service and hospitality. I do agree with others that $250 a round is a little steep for the experience.
The only food option we used was Starbucks which was fine. I did notice waits for the other restaurants pretty much all hours they were open. There were plenty of great local restaurants within a 15 minute drive that we enjoyed.
We’ll definitely return at some point for another getaway.

The JW Marriott Hill Country is one of the most beautiful family luxury hotels in Texas. However, it seems that a lot remains unfinished if it wants to bring back its customer base during this pandemic. Hotel managers warn that housekeeping is minimal and advise that customers must request towel and linen services. Because an extra $56.00 resort fee is tacked on to quoted daily room rates, requesting housekeeping every day is essential. The once beautiful gardens have withered and are overgrown with weeds. The golf courses, however are watered daily and well cared for. For social distancing we requested outdoor seating at the Cibolo Moon, but little attention was given to sweeping up trash and leaves that accumulates under the tables. It's also difficult to enjoy an outdoor meal while being invaded by swarms of flies! There are plenty of sanitizing stations throughout the complex, but be mindful that huge crowds gather everywhere and almost no one wears a mask, and there is no social distancing. No wonder there is a Covid 19 surge in San Antonio. We wanted to get away and enjoy a vacation and felt that this would be the place to do so. Tbe fact that there are no "welcome back" rates, the rooms remain expensive and I cannot for the life of me understand why they feel it necessary to charge a heavy Resort Tax each night. It is disingenuous of them to do so during this pandemic. You are entitled only to 2 glasses of cheap wine, a soft drink or a beer. That's it! You can get internet at almost any hotel. Management is simply being cheap. Hire some housekeeping staff! Hire some gardeners! Sweep some trash! Pull some weeds! If this hotel calls itself a resort, then act it out appropriately! The extra 56 dollars tacked on each day is outrageous. If you want loyaly, you have to earn it,

The resort is beautiful and in normal circumstances would have been 4 or 5 star rating. However, I do not believe the JW is taking the COVID situation seriously. They seemed to lack the extra staff necessary to provide extra cleaning of common areas. In the 3 days we were there I saw no one cleaning the elevator buttons or hand rails. There were many tables in the common area and there was no effort to clean them between use or provide wipes, etc so that people could do so themselves. There was not adequate separation between tables in the restaurants. Though the serving staff did a great job of serving the buffet, they were serving people who were not wearing masks - despite signs saying masks were to be worn when not at the table. I felt these people should have been asked to put on their masks before being served. I recommend carrying your own wipes and hand sanitizer and used it liberally.
We used Bon Voy points for one night of our stay. I was also disappointed that the JW “rewarded” its loyal members with an “upgraded” room with a view of a roof. (See picture.). This was a poor way to “reward” and recognize our loyalty to the Marriott brand.
Having said all that, the hotel and grounds were beautiful. Spa, poolside and restaurant staff friendly, service was good and the food and drinks delicious.

We just stayed one night and two days at the JW Marriott. The hotel itself is beautiful and a great getaway but I'm rating it 3 stars due to the occupancy at the hotel during Covid. My brother called the hotel beforehand to find out the precautions they were taking and I had some friends tell me it felt safe. This was the first place my husband and I stayed since March when Covid hit. The rooms themselves are fine (our toilet wasn't clean) but are a bit dated. The lobby and grounds are stunning though. We are Bonvoy members and were not able to get an upgrade because they were fully booked. Now I don't know if this means every room was taken or if the % of occupancy they were allowed were booked but based on the crowds I saw, I'm not surprised we weren't able to get an upgrade. Bit of a bummer there. The hotel provides masks at the front and has hand sanitizer throughout the hotel. Masks are required inside the hotel but you see plenty of people and families not wearing masks inside. I didn't see the commons areas get cleaned or wiped down once so I stayed away. The pool is where I really saw big issues. There is nothing being done to try to separate chairs or clean tubes after use (like we have hear the Hyatt Hill Country is doing) and lines for slides are people stacked on top of each other - I stayed away from all of this but was afraid for my family who took part. Almost every chair at the pool was taken as well which goes to show the amount of people. I think the hotel is trying to input as many guidelines as they can and are of course following "state regulations" but I think everything would be solved if they cut down on the number of people allowed to book at the hotel. Had I seen pictures of the crowds (even outside) I more than likely would have waited to book. It is the risk you take while traveling during a pandemic so I am to blame as well but I write this to help with anyone who is on the fence and up until now has been very careful and has been isolating. The staff (especially the wait staff) were amazing and so kind. Two thumbs up for them!

My wife and I visited for an anniversary getaway. The hotel is impressive from the outside, and the interior decor is modern/western. The hotel rooms are clean, although not as large as imagined.
Look, few understand the struggles of the tourism industry during the pandemic on this forum like I do. But make no mistake: resort fees are highway robbery, and this particular resort’s fees are more like hijacking. $56 / day, “justified” by providing high speed internet, access to the lazy river, a year of golf digest, golf bag storage, and racquet use.
The problem with this justification is it is only charged seasonally, with the same amenities being provided free of charge other times of the year, and not at all at Marriott sister brands. Also, if you happen to not be a golfer, have bad weather, or be in a room too far away from the internet router, all of these “fee inclusions” are pointless. You’re being asked to pay for what other people do, or to maintain amenities regardless of their functionality.
Additionally, $39 for valet parking is ridiculous. All of this is just greed resulting from a period of lost revenue, instead of gratitude for coming back and still choosing the Marriott brand. Another example? $17 Pina Coladas, not fresh, but machine frozen and delivered in a dixie cup.
Finally, even though the country is two-thirds vaccinated, Marriott still hides behind their no-housekeeping policy as a justification for not providing daily housekeeping. Airports and hospitals know that maintaining a clean environment during the stay of their respective visitors is just as important as what happens before and after a visit. At this point in the pandemic, this is just a cost-saving measure also, so if you’re going to charge $56 resort fees, this practice needs to stop.
I provided two stars instead of one only because the hotel agreed to remove this fee, but my focus here is more on what is good for everyone, not just myself. This fee needs to be removed or build into the cost.

Just visited the JW Marriott for 5 nights with 5 rooms, 7 adults & 6 children. The kids really enjoyed the resort because of the pool/water park , which is great. The hotel service, on the other hand, was a disgrace. There was NO housekeeping EVER, supposedly because of Covid. Therefore we paid to make our own beds, reuse our towels, empty our trash & call “At Your Service” when we needed additional supplies —- toilet paper, shampoo, conditioner, soap, towels, trash bags, etc. Once our towels were too used and the trash was full we just threw it out in the hallway to be eventually picked up!!! Unbelievable. The spa was very nice but the fitness area was dirty and several of the machines never worked the entire time we were there. The grounds were not well maintained —- there was trash that guests threw in the flower beds that stayed longer than it should have and many plants were dead and not removed or replaced. The staff was all very nice and did the best they could with a packed house and not enough of them to go around. Room rates were $500+ per night with a daily resort fee of $55. For that kind of money we expected a lot more than we got. We will not stay there again.

My wife and I checked in for a business trip, Staff from the door man to the front desk could not have been more helpful. We arrived by car and due to world events, I wanted to self park, the doorman followed me to a not so remote lot and provided golf cart service back to the main building. Johnathan at the front desk was helpful in finding us a room with walk-in shower, so far so good. Rooms are nicely appointed, clean, and what you would expect for a family resort. The property is picturesque.
There always a but.... Due to the pandemic one of of the 3 restaurants were closed, the remaining locations were a high in steak house (really great food, we ate there on night two), or the sports bar.
The sports bar was not enforcing mask wearing, crowds of customers were roaming the area and gathering in large numbers, we did not feel safe and also reported this to the manager of the restaurant. We decided on room service, with an extremely limited menu. After we made our selection we found out the in-room phones were dead. I had tried calling in on the main number listed for their property, and was greeted by a extremely long message of how Marriott is making the hotel safe for your visit....thank goodness I didn't have an emergency, I may have had to go into the hallway and shout fire.
Again Johnathan at the front desk was the answer, I went down and explained the issued we had experienced, he personally arrange for our room service order (really bland, cold, rubbery entries), chef must have gone home early.
One last item, we requested only the LIGHT housekeeping service, fresh towels and trash pickup. My wife saw a housekeeper when she went to lunch, and requested they get to our room as soon as possible, never happened all day.
My wife stayed at the hotel while I went to meetings off property the next day, and had no issues (third restaurant was open).
All that said, the hotel was in great shape and i would stay there again...maybe I'd eat before checking in.

I love the JW Marriott SA Hill Country! I have stayed here twice in the past month on business. The location is a little isolated- in a good way and it is an excellent venue for a conference as it is a large property without feeling too massive like typical conference hotels.
Rooms are nice with either juliet or full balconies. Bathrooms are large and well appointed with separate shower and bath. The only thing that would make the room perfect would be higher quality in room coffee service and real coffee mugs.
Hotel common spaces are nice and roomy. Conference rooms are comfortable.
The in hotel gift/convenience store is one of the best you will find!
Bar service was great and food service was excellent.
The grounds are beautiful and I would love to return to use all the pool facilities.
ALL staff were extremely friendly and attentive.
Only negative I encountered was: On my second stay I had a two queen bed room. One bed had clearly not been changed from previous stay as I discovered fresh-ish blood on the top and bottom sheet upon unmaking the bed. This was unnerving especially during a time of health crisis/concern.
If it had not been for this one bad experience, this property would truly be a perfect stay in my book!

Were titanium and the only benefit we got was the choice between extra points or free breakfast when we arrived. However the free breakfast is only for the fruits/bread and not the hot breakfast just fyi. But they will credit it towards the full breakfast which I high recommend because it was the best food on property.
