Detailed Reviews
The Gibbs Hotel surpassed our expectations. The location just across the street from the Alamo (it is built on what had been part of the Alamo compound) and a 3 minute walk to the river walk is just the first reason to consider this boutique hotel.
It was originally built as the first high rise office building in SA in 1909 and when it was renovated, much of the original hardwood flooring, terrazzo floors, marble lined walls and brass light fixtures were preserved as part of the now very sleek ambience. The lack of carpeting in the rooms added to its immaculate appearance. The bathroom included a very large shower and modern fixtures.
Add to all this, the friendly and helpful staff and the yummy hot breakfast, as well as the complimentary soup and hot snacks every afternoon in the pleasant Taproom overlooking the Alamo.
This is an excellent choice.

5. Character. Original hardwood floors and more. They have done a fantastic job keeping the history in this hotel.
4. Happy Hour. They have added snacks to their happy hour including sliders, fries, soup, and more. Thank you!
3. Hot Breakfast. Texas waffle, tacos, bacon, fresh fruit, and more. Right on time, so delicious and super friendly staff.
2. Sauna. This is how I discovered this gem. Not many hotels offer this and you can go at NO additional charge.
1. Location Location Location!
This hotel is literally across the street from The Alamo, Rivercenter Mall, the Hop On Hop Off bus tour, and more. You can walk within a block to access the must-see Riverwalk, multiple restaurants, and if you need to grab an Uber to the Pearl District you're less than 7 mins away. We have never had any issues with our stay and I have no reason to look anywhere else when we visit San Antonio.
A few things to know:
* You'll have to pay for parking separately (approx $30 a day). It's valet only and the parking lot is not immediately on the property. However, the valet staff is very friendly and we've never had to wait too long to get our vehicle.
* The first time we stayed here, our room and bathroom was a littler smaller than other hotels we have stayed in. Considering the history of the hotel the size made sense.
* Check their specials/ promotions. We have always found great rates by taking advantage for their offers.

We luckily booked the Hotel Gibbs from our home before travelling to San Antonio. It is a small boutique hotel which was originally the first high rise office building built in 1909. It is actually on the original footprint of The Alamo fort.
We were in a beautiful room with very high ceilings, original wood floors, very comfortable bed and linens and a gorgeous bathroom. Included in the very reasonable price of $89 US/night was a hot breakfast including their signature breakfast tacos and hors d'oeurves from 4:00 - 6:00 pm nightly. The breakfast room turns into a bar and house wine and draft beer were $4 each! The only thing they could do to improve that area is to cut down on the air conditioning a bit. We had to wear sweaters each time we were eating breakfast or having a cocktail and others we spoke to also had the same complaint (it was also unseasonably hot during that time of the year).
The view from our windows was spectacular as we were kiddy-corner from The Alamo. We could also see the Tower of the Americas which we didn't get to see but will get there next time.
The staff at the Hotel (including the General Manager who we spoke to at length and is one of the owners) were very gracious, accommodating and went out of their way to please their guests.
The location to the River Walk and The Alamo was perfect.
We would most definitely stay at this lovely hotel again!

Stayed here for one Saturday night with my boyfriend. The location is literally across the street from the Alamo and a very short walk from the riverwalk. Area seems safe even at night, just be wary of homeless people who may ask for money.
We got back to the hotel Saturday night around midnight and could hear club music coming from somewhere nearby until at least 1:30 AM. Thankfully I pack a white noise machine and earplugs everywhere I travel so wasn’t too awful for me personally.
The bartender Gabe is very nice and friendly. Heads up though that the bar doesn’t serve food or liquor (but $4 beer and wine!) but apparently there’s a taco bar until 7 pm I believe. I just happened to arrive after this was over.
The bedrooms are very small, as are the beds, but the hotel used to be a bank so they did what they could with the given space.
Good hotel for one or two nights but probably not much more IMO.

Thank you for your review. We are glad you enjoyed your stay. I'm sorry to hear about the noise from the vibrant area we have around the hotel that sometime can run until late into the evening. Rest assured if you were to let our staff know we can have the bike patrol control the noise for us. We also recommend trying one of our king suites or executive king with a view which will both have much larger rooms and a wonderful view of the Alamo. Thanks again for staying with us!

The location is great. Just steps from the Alamo and the federal courthouse. The room I stayed in was quite large and the bed was comfortable.
However...
When I booked the hotel, I was informed that there would be a welcome drink for booking direct and that the in-house bar was open every evening. This was incorrect. I booked the room after restrictions were tightened in Texas, yet the fact that the bar was closed was not updated on the website, nor on the little paper info card that came with the room key. Unacceptable. It wasn't until after I specifically inquired about the bar hours after I checked in that they told me about the closure. Only after I specifically pressed them about the website offer, I was given a drink from the snack fridge.
The room key was de-magnitized and stopped working multiple times during my two night stay. The front desk staff said it happens when you keep it with a phone or in a wallet but it kept happening when I kept it away from anything that would mess with the card.
I was also concerned about the lackadaisical attitude toward mask wearing by staff, specifically front desk staff. They obviously didn't wear masks if guests could see them, which was cause for concern when they were still making up the room. For all I know, housekeeping wasn't wearing masks in my room while I was out. I was also concerned that housekeeping left a rag in the room, next to the coffee machine.
Finally, as you can see by the photo attached, the room phone was frayed and in poor condition. Makes one wonder what else was not in good condition.
I would not stay here again.

Hello, I'm sorry to see we failed to meet the expectations during your stay. I apologize and understand the frustrations of our city opening and closing the bar's. All of our adult beverages in our bar are $4 and each direct booking comes with one free drink coupon and we have finally set up a grab n go section for our desk agents to be able to sell a to go drink while our bar isn't available or they can choose a couple of items from our snack area. All of our staff including housekeepers where mask while in contact with guest and the housekeeping staff where's them in all occupied rooms and during final wipe down and sanitation of the room. We do hope you give us another chance when all this is over so you can experience our fantastic breakfast buffet as well as our complimentary taco bar in the evening's We can't wait to be able to offer this again hopefully soon.

Because our home lost power and water during the historic snowstorm in February, we were forced to scramble and find last minute lodging. The Gibbs hotel was extremely accommodating despite the fact that they were likely dealing with their own difficulties in operations. They charged a very low/reasonable rate and were available to help in every way they could. The rooms were spacious and charming and it was such a relief to have a warm place to sleep while we waited out the storm. Though we weren't able to do much outside the hotel due to the weather, future travelers will love the location in the center of downtown - right across from the Alamo!
Our family is so grateful for the kindness and patience during this stressful time. We would highly recommend this hotel for a wonderful downtown stay!

Built in 1909 this is well preserved building, right across the Alamo -one of San Antonio most important historic attractions- and just a block away from the Riverwalk.
Room was cozy, breakfast was great. The only thing that I didn’t like much is that the bathroom is a little bit small, and wouldn’t be comfortable for someone with accessibility needs.

I booked here while in San Antonio through MLK Day and made my decision mostly based on price but also on account of the free breakfast offered.
The location is very good, with most notable attractions in downtown such as the Riverwalk within walking distance and the Alamo being quite literally right next door.
Staff throughout my stay were all welcoming and very helpful. The valet parking was a bit pricey but comparable to other hotels in the area.
The room was solid, but not exactly up to 3.5 star par. Furnishings were sparse and bare bones relative to the star rating. The floor wasn't carpeted, so I couldn't make out any clear unkemptness, but it did feel kind of dirty. The room size was unremarkable.
The bathroom floor had much of the same feeling, although I did appreciate that the toilet was higher than normal at most hotels of the same calibre and the fact that the shampoo, body wash, and conditioner were in bottles affixed to the walls rather than in individual packages.
The walls here are paper thin: our room was on the side of the building facing Alamo Street and I could hear very clearly almost everything going on outside as if the windows were open. Fortunately, the hallways were relatively quiet.
The breakfast was easily the most underwhelming experience of the entire stay. I was expecting something on par with Embassy Suites or a more upscale setup at a 3.5 star hotel. The selection wasn't horrendous, there were numerous hot options, but the main problems were that they, firstly, did not rotate (the hot options were unchanged both mornings I went down) and secondly, there was little choice in the aspect of cold options: cereals, breads, fruit. Hard boiled eggs were a notable omission from the selection and I'm not sure if it was because of the lighting (I went down relatively early both mornings), but the steak that was served looked excessively gray (although it tasted okay).
I suppose for the price, I shouldn't have asked for too much more in totality, but I would also be generally underwhelmed at the quality of the accommodations even at a 3 star or even 2.5 star.

Thank you for staying with us. We appreciate the review! I'm sorry to hear we didn't meet the expectations of your stay. We are located in an old historical office building built in 1909 and all of the original hallways and hardwood was kept throughout. We have a wide variety of rooms layouts. We do have a vibrant night life at times like most large cities and do have earplugs available at the front desk however there are some remedies in the room to help like setting the fan speed to high, medium, low instead of auto. We would love to have you stay again and try one of our larger rooms and do please request a room on a higher floor which can help with the noise. Our breakfast is the same daily which offers our signature build your own breakfast tacos with carne guisada along with scrambled eggs, hashbrowns, bacon, sausage, biscuits and gravy, black beans, various salsas, oatmeal, Texas shaped waffle, breads, bagels, danishes, and a variety of cold cereal options. I appreciate the feedback and will discuss a possible hardboiled egg option with my team and supply company, I hope you would give us another try should you visit our great city again.

This was our first stay at Hotel Gibbs and we can’t wait to go back. We had a King deluxe room on the 4th floor with an Alamo view. Awesome room! Very spacious and clean. Bathroom was huge. The staff was beyond wonderful and on call 24 hrs. We even had special requests we added in our notes when we booked that the staff completely accommodated and had ready in our room before arrival. So awesome! Housekeeping was great! Another reviewer mentioned not having a place to hang clothes or eat but we had a full closet and chest of drawers with a desk and chair. We paid for valet for $30 a day and it allowed us to come and go as many times as we wanted 24/7. A short walk to the river walk and right across from the Ripley’s wax museums & Alamo. Unfortunately, we did not get to experience the 1909 Tap Room in the hotel because our stay was during the middle of the week. They have limited hours because of COVID. The hotel had a continental breakfast every morning with pastries, oatmeal & yogurt. We were very happy with our stay. We visited during the week of Christmas and had a blast. Thanks again to all of the helpful hotel staff.
Look forward to staying here again!

Location is everything and this small hotel is right across from the alamo and only a block or two away from all the Ripleys exhibits and downtown shops. We didn't have to drive our car around which was perfect! It wasn't even that far from the Tower of the Americas (a mile and a half maybe) and it was an easy 15 minute walk. The hotel itself is very clean and the staff is super friendly and helpful. Be sure to bring cash for the valet. They take credit cards but you need to tip in cash. Also, this hotel is supposedly haunted which added to its allure. I personally never heard or saw anything but I read stories online about people getting scared and checking out early. Will you see a ghost during your stay? Book a room and see for yourself!
Oh....BTW do NOT park in the parking lot directly next to the hotel. It is paid parking but if you let it expire they will tow your car really fast. Even the hotel staff warned us about parking there. For $31 a night the hotel will valet park your car and you don't have to worry about getting towed.

Did not for us.
Yes(si) you can walk to the river walk from this hotel.
I was there for vacation so I do not know. I suggest you call the hotel.
Hotel Gibbs has provision for valet parking right in front of their main lobby. There is a separate valet representative near the front desk who coordinates with the valet parking. I do not remember the exact parking fees(which can change from time to time), however the parking fees were reasonable considering the proximity of the hotel to the Alamo.
