Let me start off by saying this was my first stay in a bed and breakfast so I don't have anything to compare it to. I will say the Inn is beautiful. My room and bed were quite comfortable. I LOVED being able to walk to everything in Salem. They are not serving breakfast BUT they give you a $15 voucher for a local cafe where you can order breakfast or lunch. I thought that was a very nice touch. Def a great place to stay if you want to be in the heart of Salem.

Thanks so much for the fantabulous review. We're so glad you had a great time in Salem and found our location to be in the center of all the action. As you know, all the attractions are a VERY short walk from the Stepping Stone Inn. We hope to see you again soon and am glad that your first B&B experience was so good. This review made our day! Thanks again. Cheers! Matt

A friend and I were on a girls' trip to Salem and I am so pleased we stayed here! The Inn is adorable, with lots of unique features and furnishings. When we checked in, Matt gave us a quick intro to the house as well as pointed out some original period features of the home. We stayed in the Washington DC room and we really enjoyed it. The room was comfortable and very clean. The bathroom was small but perfectly supplied. There was no conditioner in the shower but there were small make up remover wipes at the little sink in the room, which I thought was a nice touch.

No breakfast was served due to the ongoing COVID situation, but we received vouchers to a local Cafe and it was delicious.

Matt and Kelly also sent a super comprehensive email with wonderful suggestions for local to-dos, which was so thoughtful and helpful. Overall, this was a lovely stay in a very convenient location. My friend and I also love cats so we enjoyed the friendly resident kitties when we came back from our morning breakfast or afternoon touring. Definitely recommend!

A lovely B&B is a good location for visiting the city's attractions. Friendly and helpful innkeepers (Matt & Kelly). We stayed in Salem room on the third floor.
For anyone unsure of navigating two flights of stairs with luggage, Matt offered assistance with this during check in and check out.
The bed and pillows were really comfortable. The bathroom was small but perfectly adequate.
The B&B's website and the confirmation email for the booking contained lots of useful information, including recommendations for tours and restaurants. There are two parking spaces to the side of the property in Kimball Court and you can pull in here to offload luggage. If the spaces are taken, a free pass is provided for the parking garage on New Liberty Street (2 minutes' walk down the street). A car is not needed as Salem is a very walkable city.
Breakfast in-house had not yet resumed following Covid lockdowns; instead a daily voucher ($15 per room per day if I recall correctly) was provided for Red Line Cafe on Essex Street (5 minutes' walk). The food here was good and the portion sizes were large; we found that one sandwich (served with a bag of potato crisps) was sufficient for both of us.

Just finished a 3-night stay here. TBH, I mostly booked it for the cats and it didn't disappoint. The location was extremely walkable, the hosts were friendly and happy to talk about the area, and the fresh coffee every morning was quite good. The cats were friendly, too.
I stayed in the Boston room. It was small, but cute, with a nice bathroom. It had everything I needed: a hot shower, internet (I'm on a workcation), and a comfy bed. Despite being so close to everything, it was nice and quiet and I slept well. Bathroom had plenty of towels, shampoo, body wash, and handsoap. Mini-fridge downstairs, plus tea and coffee.
They were not providing breakfast, but did offer a voucher to a nearby cafe. Food there was more than I needed for just me, so I frequently had leftovers for lunch as well.

A fantastic historical home in the heart of Salem. Everything is walkable from here, so you don’t have to drive!!! Matt and family are super nice and a great source of information on sites, restaurants, tours, etc. Location is so good that people on sidewalk look at you with envy as you enter and exit- you’re livin’ the dream in Salem!!! The inn has two cats and that another plus- Blakey is a sweetheart. We stayed three nights over Columbus weekend in small San Francisco room and was wonderful for exploring the area. Everything we needed.

Only thing “negative” I would mention is that as a very old, historical home, the steps are narrow, steep and handrail is low, and bathroom is small. If you’re older or have mobility issues, this may not be for you. Otherwise, if you’re looking for a spot to call home while exploring Salem, this is it.

Thanks for the fantastic review, Chuck. It was a pleasure hosting you and Jennifer for 3 nights during the busy season of October. We're so happy that you had a great time in Salem and so pleased that you would recommend us to others. Thanks for pointing out that the stairs in this historic house might not work well for some visitors as we don't have any guestrooms on the first floor. We hope we'll see you two again sometime soon for another Salem Adventure! Cheers! Matt & Kelly

My husband and I just stayed at the Stepping Stone Inn. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The owners, Matt and Kelly, have created a beautiful and relaxing B&B in the heart of Salem. We were greeted by Matt, who first shared the history of the house. Then, he happily answered any questions about the area. He then helped us with our luggage up to our room, where he then explained the theme of our room which ended up being the San Francisco room. We were given a parking pass to the parking garage a block away where we kept our car secure and well kept for our stay. With COVID still making the rounds, they didn’t provide breakfast in house. However, we were given vouchers to a great little cafe in town called the Red Line Cafe which was fantastic. In house we took time to pet our new found friends Sonny and Blakey who are the owners cats who made our stay that much better. If your are planning a trip to Salem, we highly suggest staying at the Stepping Stone Inn. We can’t wait for our next visit.

The Stepping Stone Inn is the perfect place to stay when visiting Salem! The location is right in the middle of everything and nothing is more than a 15 minute walk! The owner, Matt, was very accommodating helping us find and secure a reservation during the busy summer months. He and his wife, Kelley were so hospitable and friendly. We stayed in the Washington DC room which had its own en suite bathroom. The room was just the right size and had everything we needed. The bed and pillows were comfortable and everything was very clean. Breakfast was not being served but we were given a voucher to get breakfast at a local cafe. The food there was very good and it was only a short walk away. Parking was not available since we checked in early but we were given a pass for the nearby parking garage and that worked out great. I cannot say enough good things about this place and its owners! We were extremely happy and hope to return soon!

We were a group of 6 that stayed in 3 rooms at the inn. Each room was comfortable and felt like it had that special touch. The location can't be beat in terms of convenience. The host was fun to talk with and super communicative - their list of local things was excellent and apprciated. I hope to stay here again in the future.

This was our 25th wedding anniversary trip and we were so so pleased to be able to stay at this wonderful, beautiful Inn decorated with antiques and items from earlier times. An adorable and incredibly well situated, and except for the traffic noise, a perfect place to rest at night. We adored the place, the owners, their delightful and dramatic 7 year old son, and the house cats. Great coffee brewed for all at 8 am with a few biscotti and breakfast bars if you want them, and access to a great dining room and parlor filled with wonderful things to look at, terrific and exotic succulents, and comfy furniture. We parked the car and walked everywhere for the next several days and so we got to know the town a bit more than just driving from place to place. The historical part of Salem is small and it begs to be wandered in. Do so. And if you choose to come here, try to book one of the four rooms at this magnificent place. You won’t regret it.

Matt and Kelly run a homely and welcoming inn. My room was well-equipped and well decorated, I stayed in the Washington room and loved the decor. I was comfortable and had enough space to spread my belongings and get ready.

The shared spaces were lovely to use. I made use of Matt's famous coffee in the morning and a mini fridge, cutlery and crockery were available if I brought leftovers back.

I loved the charm and history of the building. The inn is well situated and I walked everywhere with ease. If I did have any questions about where to eat, visit, or shop, the innkeepers were extremely approachable and full of useful knowledge.

The innkeeper's cats deserve a mention as they were cute and I liked the friendliness of the atmosphere. As a solo traveler from the UK, it was nice to be welcomed, feel safe, and have advice from a local.

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay and will look forward to booking again in the future.
