Travelers' Choice
Our historic hotel, adjacent to the Common in Salem, MA boasts 89 rooms, including 6 suites. Ideal for business and leisure travelers to Boston and the North Shore, we offer complimentary on-site parking and are within walking distance to the MBTA train and Boston Harbor ferry. Our rooms offer local, hand-crafted Gardner Mattresses©, hypo-allergenic Beyond Down pillows, all-natural and organic Pharmacopia bath products, CubieTime alarm clocks with USB power outlets and black-out drapes. Guests can enjoy complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi throughout the hotel, complimentary coffee, tea and newspapers in the Lobby, and free use of the local YMCA. Built in 1925, the Hawthorne is a proud member of Historic Hotels of America and New England Inns & Resorts and is a certified Age-Friendly Salem business. Lobby restrooms and a number of guest rooms are handicapped accessible. Guest rooms received updates in 2018 including paint, wallpaper, drapes, headboards, bedding and decorative pillow shams that are laundered after every guest. The common areas were refreshed in 2020; our Lobby boasts new carpeting and soft furnishings. As an alternative, we also offer an adjacent guest house with four traditionally appointed bedrooms. Built in 1807 and named for local nature artist Fidelia Bridges, the structure is a fine example of Federal-period architecture featuring wide pine floors, low ceilings and historic detail. Rooms at the guest house are recommended for one to two travelers and are not handicapped accessible. Due to the unique configuration of all of our guest rooms, we do suggest speaking with a member of our Front Desk team to ensure you are booking the most appropriate room type for your needs.

Reviews Summary
This summary was created by AI, based on recent reviews.

The Hawthorne Hotel captivates guests with its historical allure and prime location, making it a favorite for visitors keen to explore local attractions on foot. The service at the hotel receives plaudits for the staff's cordiality and efficiency, although there have been some hiccups with understaffing and room access. While the amenities add to the hotel's charm and the housekeeping staff is celebrated for their cleanliness, some guests feel that certain rooms could benefit from modern updates. Opinions on value are mixed, with some finding the pricing fair and others taking issue with extra charges during special events. Overall, the hotel's traditional ambiance and clean, cozy rooms are frequently praised, although their size and occasional mustiness are noted.

Guess beware!!! The hotel is on a one pipe system so the ac will not work at night. We turn on the ac and got heat instead. The room got to 92 so we turn off the system and open the windows…. This ruined our stay. Once I expressed my concerns they told me about the ac issue. It would be nice to know before we stayed. They did not offer a discount. The rooms are over priced.

Historic and pretty hotel. Coffee in the lobby every morning. Tavern and restaurant on-site with good service and great food/drinks. Rooms are small and room temp isn't controlled in the room, but the window opened and it was fine. If you want a character-filled hotel, book now.

The hotel was a wonderful location. Close to everything. We walked all over. We really enjoyed the rooms. We celebrated my son’s birthday. It was such a special time for us. There are so many places locally to visit. We were planning our next visit while there. They offered hot apple cider midday and coffee to guests. It’s a really special hotel. We have some really fond memories .

Well after going back and forth and finally silent for 4 months, we have decided to use another hotel for my wedding. Silence is always loud. I'm starting to think these people and the hotel may actually be RACIST. Oh, I forgot someone shared a old post of this hotel allowing a guest to have a CONFEDEATE FLAG. I am Latino and my husband is African American. We don't owe a deposit since we never signed a contract. I'm glad we found another hotel in a city nearby. This is PA if you are a person of color, IT'S CLEAR THE HAWTHONE HOTEL, THEY ARE RACIST AND DON'T WANT YOUR BUSNESS. I will be sharing my experience on all my social media platforms. I still have the menus and other documents that you sent and phone conversations recorded.

Great place robust in history! Haunted floor for those who like that sort of thing. We were in the area for a wonderful 50th anniversary on the water around the corner! The town has many interesting attractions and scores of curious people making the visit....

FrankG17 - thank you for choosing the historic Hawthorne as your accommodations for the anniversary weekend you attended in Salem. The Hawthorne may have views of leafy Salem Common and the Witch Museum, but we are just a short walk to the harbor and all of the attractions.

We booked a superior room which was fairly pricey but we felt worth it. It was a corner room which gave a great aspect. Plenty of room for us and all our stuff. As this was our last night of a month long road trip we had accumulated a lot of stuff! Fabulous location and with parking included, thi shotel checked all our boxes.

We are honored that you capped off your month-long road trip with an overnight in Salem at the historic Hawthorne. We are an "U-shaped" building, meaning half of our rooms face "inside" while the other half face "outside," including the corner room you enjoyed. For future guests, if you'd like to see Salem Common and the Witch Museum from your window, be sure to request this room type when making your reservation. We hope your adventures bring you back to the North Shore in the future.

All this hotel has is its location . My family and I paid over 300$ for one night. Room is small very small, you here all surrounding room doors open/close. Walls are thin, all we smell is the kitchen! It's nauseating. We are on the 6th floor inner area and there s a spot light /motion light on the fire escape that is constantly going on and off. It seeps in through the windows . Shower room smells like mildew, separate toilet area is a great idea but that's if you can fit. ( very tiny)

We went yesterday for the Thanksgiving buffet. The staff did a great job managing. I also thought it was a great idea to have a cocktail room downstairs for folks who were waiting to be seated. Food was good overall but two things - first we were the last seating of the day and they ran out of white meat turkey. Instead, we got some horrible processed fake turkey product which was unedible. The dark meat was real turkey but we got scraps. Come on, it's thanksgiving, the buffet is 70 dollars a person, and we got fake turkey? Also the dessert table was disappointing. Chocolate chip cookies and whipped pies. Other than that it was very good and we will be back, hopefully we can get an earlier seating to get real turkey.

It’s a great hotel, however it is an older hotel so it comes with all of the old quirks. The bathrooms are tiny and the walls are thin, hope you don’t have noisy neighbors. That said, you really can’t beat the location and both of the hotel restaurants were incredible. We did have an issue with our lock and ended up having to switch rooms the last night, but management did everything they could to fix the situation.
