My stay at the Amelia Payson House was simply delightful. From booking with ease to pulling up to the beautiful Greek Revival style house, Nancy and Jim made quick work of making my mother and I feel at home. Our room on the second floor was spacious and dripped with comfort. The decor and furnishings as well as the electric fireplace and nifty multi-lamp remote made for effortless relaxation. The entire room and private bathroom were spotless along with a small parlor offering shared living space for guests to help themselves to coffee, tea and cookies(very tempting) as well as games and books. Beyond all of the necessities we come to expect while traveling both Nancy and Jim up'ed the ante by setting a beautiful table each morning with even better food and conversation. They flowed with ease between sharing the experience with us and making the experience for us. We felt welcomed into their home truly as their guests. I might even go as far as to say visit Salem in order to stay at the Amelia Payson House, not the other way around. You will be happy you did. Also, I failed to take a photo of the Swedish pancakes but they were delicious!

Look no further I can’t imagine any other place in Salem could out do the experience my husband, and I had staying at this perfect bed & breakfast! First off it’s beautiful and charming from the decor and wallpaper you can see the love and attention to even the smallest detail put into this historic home. Everything was spotless not a speck of dust to be found each room smells wonderful. Our bed was extremely comfortable. The owner Jim should be a national treasure he made us feel like family and true guests in his home. Each morning the breakfast was perfection, omelettes , French toast, pancakes, salmon and bagels along with fresh fruit yogurt and other treats. Each morning was such a wonderful experience and surprise each day. The table was always beautifully set with china and cloth napkins. During the five days we stayed at the Amelia Payson house we wanted for nothing. We highly recommend excellent is actually an understatement when describing our experience here.

This was probably the most amazing and comfortable place to stay! Hosts Nancy and Jim made the stay super comfortable and it the stay came with their home made breakfast so this is not like an average air b&b! Everything super felt like home here! When I woke up in the morning all I can smell is Nancy's breakfast from upstairs on an open window. It's like waking up to my Mother's cooking that's how awesome this was! Can't say how grateful I am for this stay!

Price wise if you book here I would strongly suggest cash since in general credit card companies will take away a good partial percentage from the local business makers in general. You can do credit card but it will take away a good percentage that is not on the hosts fault so for me I did cash.

Definitely book here if you want the best breakfast in town and some actual free parking while in Salem! I hope to go back here next year. Will never forget Nancy and Jim and this place for sure! ^__^

I stayed with Nancy and Jim at the Amelia Payson House for 14 weeks. As a graduate student in a brand new city where I knew no one, they immediately made me feel comfortable and helped me with anything I could have ever wanted or needed. They told me the best places to explore, the best restaurants to try, and adventures to tackle all throughout New England. The house was always immaculate, and Nancy is an incredible chef, to say the least! (They were also great at accommodating my gluten/dairy allergy). As time went on, the relationships I built with Nancy and Jim truly impacted my life, and they became my "Salem Parents."

If you are looking for a place to stay in Salem, in Boston, or even in New England (since everything is such a quick drive), THIS is the place. Between Nancy and Jim's genuine and kind souls, to the welcoming home, to the amazing food, and quaint area the house is located in, you couldn't pick a better place to stay!

Nancy and Jim were absolutely wonderful hosts. My pregnant wife and I stayed here for 3 nights during the busiest time of the year for Salem (October) and they made us feel as comfortable as humanly possible.

We arrived a little early for check-in and the room was already ready anyway so they let us come right in. Our suite was super clean, and as quiet as it could be in a centrally located area.

Pretty much anything in Salem is walkable from this bnb, you’re only a block or two away from Salem commons too so it’s so easy to find your way back at night.

Breakfast was amazing every morning, and right on time, and Nancy was more than accommodating to our diets. Jim refills coffee faster than I can drink it, and that is NOT a complaint! Also he’s got a secret to why his coffee tastes so great.. ask him, it’s awesome.

Overall, I’d recommend this gorgeous 1845 house to anyone staying in Salem. Great, great hosts, perfect car location, private parking, great stories and history, you can’t go wrong here.

This historic BnB is beautiful and has a charming appeal. The house and room were spotlessly clean. We enjoyed that it only had 3 rooms and each room had their own bathroom. I was in constant contact with Nancy before booking regarding touristy questions and she always responded immediately. The breakfast was amazing. Nancy cooked a traditional Italian egg frittata which was mouth watering and I'd go back just for her homemade cranberry coffee cake. Downtown Salem is a mere 2 minute walk away.

Truly a marvelous find. The owners Nancy and Jim were so welcoming and sweet. It was like going over to your aunt and uncle’s house. The location was perfect; easily walkable to all the popular sites of Salem. The house was beautiful and the room was very comforting. The decor was traditional but with a modern twist. The best part was the breakfast that Nancy and Jim personally makes for you every morning. Everything was fresh and delicious. We went in the off season so booking was really easy. Jim said if going in the fall, especially October, need to book several months or even a year in advance. All in all highly highly recommend!!

I highly recommend the Amelia Payson House! My BFF and I stayed there for 4 nights in October; first visit to Salem! The home is historic with a bit of a modern twist inside. The grounds are lovely and well cared for. Our room on the main level was quaint and comfortable with private bath; easy access. Virginie catered to our every need and was a delight to talk with. SHE MAKES THE BEST BREAKFASTS! Delicious and elegant. She even went out of her way to cater to my friend's more simple breakfast preference (Cheerios!). While staying there, I had brioche french toast, fruit, delicious salad, frittata, egg/bagel sandwich and quiche oh and delicious croissants; coffee, juice, water etc. These meals were wonderful, home made. I was in heaven. We arrived a bit early and were able to park the car in our designated spot early and start checking out Salem right away. This B and B is located on a side street which helps with Halloween tourist noise and is only a block or two away from Essex Street attractions which made it easier on our feet! The weather cooperated and it was so fun seeing all the beautiful homes decorated for Halloween/Fall as we walked around. Thank you Virginie for making our stay so special!

My sister and I are so thankful we found our way to Virginie and the Amelia Payson House for our first trip to Salem. If you are planning a trip to Salem, this is the place to stay, you will LOVE her and her top notch Bed and Breakfast! We can not say enough positive things about our experience there.

The setting is beautiful and peaceful; very homey. Lovely grounds with beautiful flowers and plants and just the right amount of spooky decor to get you in the mood for all things Salem. You are just a few houses down from the Salem Common and a short walk to many of the “things to do” in Salem.

We stayed in the upstairs room with the king bed, it is quite big, and we were able to spread out and have our own space within the room. The bed is ahhmazing, soft and comfortable, with plenty of pillows and covers. The bathroom is a nice size, too, with all the toiletries you will need.

Virginie goes above and beyond to make you feel welcome. She is friendly and kind. She is very knowledgeable about Salem. She recommended several things for us to do and try; gift shop at the Peabody Essex Museum, chocolates at Kakawa Chocolate House, and popovers at Ledger Restaurant. Her recommendations were spot on!!!

And, of course, her breakfasts were yummy goodness. Her afternoon tea time is perfection, and you should definitely have some while you’re there, because her homemade pastries are spectacular! There are always a variety of drinks and snacks available, so you won’t go thirsty or hungry.

My sister and I take a “sister trip” once a year and this one is now one of our most favorites, and part of that is because of Virginie and the Amelia Payson House. Plus, you’ll get to meet her two 4 - legged babies, Sparky and Bella, which to us, was a welcoming bonus. It helped me not miss my 4 - legged baby, Hamilton, too much! We LOVE dogs! Trust me, stay with Virginie at the Amelia Payson House while visiting Salem, you will feel like you’ve found a new friend and a new home.

My sister and I stayed at this lovely place in early Dec 2022, it was a birthday trip/sister's trip for my sister. For starters the home is absolutely beautiful, we stayed in the downstairs room that had a queen size and a full size bed, both soso comfortable! From the moment we arrived Virginie made us feel right at home, she is such a sweet and personable host, we truly enjoyed her company during breakfast, tea time and other times when we spoke. Breakfast was to die for, Virginie is amazing in the kitchen, every breakfast was a dream! She also gives great advice as far as which places and restaurants are a must! So many great recommendations, we were able to do so much more thanks to that. The B&B is also within a 5-7 min walking distance from literally everything that is worth walking to. We truly enjoyed our time there and hope to return soon! Thank you Virginie, Bella, Sparky (Two sweetest pups ever!), and Todd.

I wanted to touch on some of the questions at the bottom: There was not a fridge or a coffee maker in the room, but there is one in the dining room that is stocked with several beverages that you can access at any time, and coffee is served with breakfast, plus you can have tea time, Virginie is super flexible and so nice, she also always made sure we had enough towels, linens, drinks, snacks.

While you are smart to plan in advance, because September and October are really busy, I would suggest checking with some of the places where you might want to stay and see how far out they suggest. If you are coming from Georgia, it would be easier to take Amtrak to Boston and then switch to Boston regional rail which has a stop in Salem. Have fun!
