I just got back from my first visit to the Elkhorn Ranch, but it won't be my last. Everything I'd heard and read about it is true. The staff, every single one of them, are so friendly and accommodating. As to the guests, many of them have been coming here for decades and immediately embrace you into what seems more like extended family than mere acquaintances. The food is wonderful, and the cook accommodates all kinds of special diets (in my case vegan, including delicious desserts!). The wranglers are expert, yet so easygoing, and take great care to match you to a horse (or pony) and a trail that suit your ability level, from gentle walking to loping. And OMG the landscape! Hills and deserts with breathtaking views seemingly at every turn. I felt like I was dropped into a Western movie. The rooms are super comfy, and every room and building is adorned beautifully with paintings, Indian rugs, and other Western decorations. Cabins are spaced for privacy, yet close to the main building, which houses the dining room and a sitting room/library with a fireplace and an impressively stocked library of books from and about the West. If they had paid me to write this, I couldn't be more effusive in my praise. I had to choke back tears when I said good-bye. I left a piece of myself at the Elkhorn Ranch.

In March I returned to Elkhorn Ranch outside of Tucson for my 23rd visit, and Elkhorn continues to provide the enchantment that it did on my first visit. The first time I stumbled upon Elkhorn Ranch my kids were 7 and 10. Now both daughters love to return, and have so with their partners, who also have fallen in love with the experience. Now I have a new granddaughter, and her parents are very excited to start her riding at Elkhorn, although that will be not for a few years. The vibe is very "get away" from your normal routine. There are no phones or TV's in the rooms, although there is a room with wifi, in case you need to connect. The horses are all well trained. Both my husband and my daughter's fiance had never been on horses before, but had wonderful riding experiences and want to return

My first dude ranch experience couldn't have been any better. Beautiful location, wonderful, warm hospitality offered by the Miller family and all ranch staff, and fantastic riding opportunities. There are lots of excellent reviews for Elkhorn that go into extraordinary detail. The common thread among them are the personal touches things the Millers do to ensure the best possible experience for their guests. A few items of note: Every breakfast and lunch, Charlie comes through and asks every family what kind of ride they want. You can walk or lope, go to the mountains or flats, you can ask to see particular things, and there is much to see. If you don't bond with your horse, you talk about it so you can get a better match. I will say, they did a great job matching people with horses, including for those of us who were first timers. And I was very pleased at how our rides let me practice my horsemanship. I'm a reasonably experienced rider, and this was NOT a nose-to-tail experience. The wranglers are great; very interested in helping you get what you want out of rides and committed to maximizing the experience. In other amenities, the cabins are very neat. They make your bed while you're at breakfast and turn-down service at dinner; an unexpected pleasure. The food is amazing, and there are delicious vegetarian options. Not great WiFi in rooms, but they are up front about that and there's an office with good WiFi and computer access for guests. Personally, I enjoyed disconnecting. The staff are all wonderful, from the cooks in the kitchen to the people who clean rooms and do other work. It says a lot about what kind of a place it is to work. Last but not least: while there were a few other first-timers there, what is most notable are the number of people who have been visiting Elkhorn annually for decades--literally! This speaks volumes to what the ranch has to offer, and how above and beyond the Millers go to make the experience enjoyable. They also make it easy for you to think about planning your next trip out there. It's already on my horizon as an annual trip--something I've never committed to before.

My wife and I just returned from our first week at Elkhorn and are already planning our next visit. We like friendly people, good food, and great horses, and Elkhorn provides all in abundance. We are relatively inexperienced riders. However, with excellent instruction, superbly trained horses, and expert guides, we were very comfortable riding very rugged, high mountain trails. The scenery was spectacular and the week at the ranch far exceeded our expectations.

Going to the Elkhorn Ranch is like visiting the home of someone who likes you a lot! Every need is quietly attended to by the genuine and pleasant staff. The food was delicious and everyone got what they wanted, including the vegans, vegetarians, sweet-tooths, and carnivores. The horses are very well trained and the guides are knowledgeable, responsible, and always fun. The rides themselves are highly-personalized. Each rider can decide whether they prefer a scenic, slower-paced ride or an exhilarating run through the desert, a short ride, or even an all-day ride. The Saturday picnic was wonderful. We rode to a lovely spot where staff met us with hot soup, beer and soda, and the best barbecued burgers ever. Then we rode back and rested in our comfortable casitas until dinner. Some people went hiking with the ranch hiking guide. My friend had a massage and said it was great. I wouldn't change a thing about the Elkhorn Ranch and can hardly wait to go back.
