Helpful staff, great hiking and wildlife, other campers were friendly, good for kids. We tent camped with not much grass on our lot, but that seems normal in the area in mid summer. The trails nearby led to Sprague Lake, which is tough in the beginning, but great once you push through the first 0.5 miles.

Camping spaces are well spaced and clean. Bathrooms are also clean with plenty of hot water for showers. Location is excellent with lots of trailheads to begin hiking upon arrival. Just a short drive from the entrance to Rocky Mountain National Forest and located outside of Estes, you get the atmosphere of camping in the wild. East Portal can be... More

We are a family with small children & this campground was perfect for us. The sites are fairly close together and there is not much privacy. There are mtn views and nice amenities like showers, a playground, & wood, ice, & a few other necessities available on site. I would suggest the sites farthest back from the road/office if you... We had a great time during our visit, and east portal made a great Basecamp. The bathrooms were clean, and even though the sites are close together, nobody bothered us. (Except one noisy crow!) It's easy to get to and far enough away from the crowds to let you enjoy nature. 55 was the site we were in and it... More

My wife and I camped here six nights of an anniversary trip to hike RMNP and to enjoy Estes Park. We enjoyed our stay thanks to realistic expectations provided by other reviews. The good: great location, convenient to RMNP and Estes Park, but isolated enough to not feel close to town. Beautiful area, with lots of trees and great views.... More

We had a 20' travel trailer in A15 which was almost impossible to fit into. I have a lot of experience backing a 18' horse trailer, so was able to get our trailer into the spot. It was nerve wracking. I would not choose this site again. I did walk around and find other suitable sites for the future. The... More

My wife and I stayed at East Portal Campground for two nights staging for a backpacking trip into the RMNP backcountry...and we could not wait to get in to the backcountry and away from the obnoxious people. The facility itself is okay but the camp sites are way to close together. On the second night a family set up camp... More

We don't prefer to camp in "campgrounds", we are more the National Park camping type, but with the kids, the convenience that was provided by the campground suited our needs better. The East Portal Campground is kept up very well, the bathrooms were always clean, there was no litter on any of the paths, and the kids loved the playground.... More

When you're driving into the campground, you get an amazing view of the Rockies! This whole campground is awesome. I felt very safe there and campers tend to keep to themselves. The bathrooms and showers were super clean and so appreciated (flushing toilets) If it was full, it probably would have been uncomfortable, but luckily there weren't many people so... More

We are avid campers and enjoy coming to the Estes Park/Rocky Mountain NP area in the summer. I found this campground online when others were unavailable and was hopeful that it would be a good experience. It was a big letdown. First off, we brought a popup camper that is 19 ft and could only barely maneuver into a cramped... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
So close, yet feels so far away from the hustle and bustle of Estes Park. This very popular campground is located at an elevation of 8,300 feet at the end of a beautiful road just west of town. There are wonderful views of the snow covered peaks in Rocky Mountain National Park and access to the East Portal Reservoir which has ample opportunities for fishing. This double loop campground offers shady sites suitable for tenters and campers with small RVs and trailers shorter than 24 feet in length. It is especially well-suited for families and outdoor enthusiasts looking to explore nearby nature and trails in Rocky Mountain National Park. Sites at this campground open up to views of Rocky Mountain National Park and starry nighttime skies. A mature blend of ponderosa and lodgepole pines interspersed with groves of aspens makes it a wonderful home away from home. It is an ideal setting for guests seeking recreation and relaxation. The camping season runs from May 15th - October 3rd. ... more   less
