Detailed Reviews
We took the TranzAlpine Train from Christchurch to Greymouth, where we picked up our hire car and drove the easy route to Westwood Lodge, where we stayed for 2 nights.
Our room, was very comfortable and spacious. Although it was early November, it was raining and a bit chilly, but the room was toasty warm. The room was large, with a very big comfy bed, also a large sofa, which had a great view of the glacier, as did the patio. Always fresh milk in the fridge and a fruit bowl on arrival The bathroom was large, with a good range of toiletries. Good choice and breakfast, waiting staff were friendly and very efficient,
Kaz, (helped by Zac and Benson, the 2 labradoodles), was a great host, friendly and gave us plenty of information on where to eat and visit. The guest lounge was a nice place to relax of an evening.
It was an easy walk to the centre, where there is a wide range of places to eat and drink.

Westwood Lodge is a distinctive Fraemohs timber building, with lovely native bush views everywhere.
We stayed in a spacious, clean as a whistle Grand suite with good heating. The layout consisted of a roomy ensuite, bedroom with a Super King oh so comfortable bed, spacious luggage storage area and a lounge. The large Lodge lounge/dining room was warm and inviting with a huge fireplace. Kaz prepared a generous buffet breakfast including a variety of fresh fruit, homemade yoghurts, and choice of a delicious cooked option. Benson and Zak the Labradoodles were gorgeous and well behaved. We had a wonderful stay.

Franz Josef. Sort of expected a bit more, as we have had the most amazing experiences in many of the lodges in NZ....this one is sort of Yosemite Lodge, but much cleaner! and that I will say is something, spotless room, bath , sitting area for breakfast. Patio is nice looking out at the view Am sure they house so many one nite guests that room upgrade seems questionable. Manager was gracious and helpful, breakfast was simple , yet covered all requests. Parking is easy, right by your room and location is great, easy access to the glacier and to activities in the area. Although on the main road, we did not hear traffic noise...very quiet there after dark!

Was welcomed in by Kaz the owner. Friendly and efficient. We had already booked a restaurant in town to eat and she very kindly rung them and arranged a driver from the restaurant to come and pick us up (free service).
She also held breakfast for us on our last morning as we went out early on a helicopter flight. Two gorgeous dogs too!
Room was very comfortable and clean and breakfast excellent with hot food cooked to order.

Like a German pension: basic but not in a bad way. The little town is just a tourist place, not nice. The Ice Blue Cafe has atrociously bad food and wines—a tourist ripoff. The Snakebite has excellent food and pleasant service. Both places play music far too loudly. The glacier is barely worth visiting on foot since helicopters roar above you the whole time: the 8 am to 6 pm time slot for them is too generous, and removes the charm of the walk for ramblers. There are some hot pools in the little town, which are pretty basic but reasonably nice.

Westwood Lodge is decent but rather overpriced for what it is. Both the continental and cooked breakfast is delicious and spot on time, the bed is comfortable, and the location is quiet. However, everything else is dated and tired. The staff is friendly but not seasoned hospitality professionals – they are learning and eager.

Really good place to stay.
Room (06) was very spacious, clean and comfortable. Car parking was almost right outside the door.
Bathroom was also spacious with two bowls and a good shower.
Good breakfast with a selection of hot dishes, along with plenty of toast as well as cereals, yoghurt etc.
Short (15 min) walk into town or a couple of minutes by car.

The property is a outdoorsy lodge style with log walls and a nice fireplace always running in the main lodge. The rooms were relatively large, each with a patio and balcony and a private sliding glass door. I stayed in the main lodge, which was nice, but there are also cabins.
The staff was attentive, breakfast was good ( a full English breakfast with all the trimmings), as well as fruit, juices, yogurt and pastries. The hotel is about 2 km from the main village.
I'd stay there again, I was there for 2 nights. I had no problem with the Wifi from the lodge, which was running at about 10 Mbps. I am a digital nomad and work from a laptop and iPad, so this is important to me. The only problem I had was early the first night, could get coverage in my room, so I had to go to the lodge (which was okay since I wanted some tea) but it was fixed later that evening. I think the router for the rooms may have been down.

On a Luxury Escape tour, with a helicopter trip over the glaciers booked as part of the package, requiring check-in at their office by 7.30am. Breakfast was included in the package. What time did the breakfast dining open. 7.30am???
Don’t know where the normal management of the hotel were, we were checked in by their teenage children (or someone’s teenage children). They were keen and tried to be helpful, but were clearly burdened with a job for which they had little training.
The lounge room with gas fire was nice, but no one about to provide any service.

Overall, the hotel is fine. But considering the cost and the unbelievably low level of staffing, I don't believe the cost of this hotel matches its value. To be clear, the one (!) staff we met our entire stay was very nice, but it was clear that he was totally overwhelmed by the immense amount of work on his plate without any help.
In addition, our room was absolutely sweltering, and there was no A/C or even a fan. We couldn't open windows because there were no bug nets so sandflies would come into the room.

Yes we do offer a wash & fold service here at Westwood Lodge.

Alternatively there is also a laundromat located in Franz Josef Village.
Kind Regards
Kaz Gilmore
There is a number of good restaurants located in the village which is located 1.2km south of Westwood Lodge.
The Alice May & The Blue Ice are always favourites with our guests. If you contact us here at Westwood Lodge we will be happy to make a booking on your behalf & should you require a courtesy pick up & drop of to either of the above restaurants we can arrange this.
We hope to welcome you to Westwood Lodge
