I wish I could say something positive about this place, it was a hostel like feel with limited facilities, overpriced wifi which didn't work in all the buildings anyway. The food was ok... the rooms are basic and old with not much love. The showers would lose hot water when someone else got into the shower - The staff weren't... More

Stayed here whilst travelling up the northern island of New Zealand. The views were stunning at this hotel, whilst it's no frills. It is clean and comfortable as well as being close to some very good hiking trails around Whakapapa. Food was excellent and they went above and beyond for my coeliac partner.

This hotel was passable at best. We just stayed one night to start a hike the next morning and found that, despite what their website indicates, they offered no free wifi and have no possibility of a late checkout. The hotel bar closed an hour before it was advertised to do so and didn't have working beer taps. If I... More

The Skotel offers a range of accommodation types and I can't comment on the others: I stayed in one of the backpacker rooms, which has three bunks. Might be a little cosy for three people but for two it was adequate and comfortable, with communal kitchenette and bathrooms just down the corridor. Staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The restaurant... More

Always an amazing experience as each visit can be different, its always advisable to check the weekly weather report for extreme snowfall blizzards as the main ski slope maybe closed for the experienced skiiers but lots of activities available on the lower valley also called the Happy vally, huge cafetaria, activity and enthusiasts who want to learn skiing, instructors can... As part of the Top Deck tour in north island of NZ, we stopped and stayed here for two days, and was already prearranged by them. I am very impressed with the place, if you subtract the natural elements of being about 1100 metres above sea level, and the wind that comes along with it. We stayed in a chalet... More

I had read the reviews for Skotel and was hesitant about booking, but as we really wanted to hike in the area decided to take a chance. Sadly, this hotel hasn't had an update in years, what could be great accommodation is about 2 star. The walls between the rooms are thin, you can hear the people in the next... More

Took my family there for a week's skiing, it was perfect- really kid friendly, not the newest place but the warmth of all the staff and their utter helpfulness made it a truly nice place to be. Kids loved the games room and pool table, we cooked in the backpacker wing kitchen (pretty min cooking kit-needs more plates etc but... More

I came here for breakfast and dinner a couple times and was never disappointed! The breakfast is served quickly and is delicious! Go for the bacon eggs benedict, you won't be disappointed. Billie is a fabulous and friendly server and excellent behind the bar, and she makes a mean coffee! Sophie in reception is helpful and always smiling and a... More

We stayed here for two nights and it was a very relaxing time we explored the surroundings the room was sufficient for whst we needed. Dinner was quite nice both nights and definitely filling ice cream we had for dessert was delicious and moorish. Pillows were hard as rocks but otherwise the stay was good weather was mild and only... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Skotel was established in the early 60s by a group of keen skiers who wanted the convenience of accommodation close to the ski-fields but more comfort than the ski lodges of that time. Skotel has maintained its friendly informal atmosphere but now provides Qualmark three star accommodation and the exciting cuisine experiences of our new dinner menu. ... more   less
