Stayed here as part of a Topdeck tour, and it was fantastic. Sold as a backpacker hotel, it wasn't unexpected that the rooms and bathrooms were basic and that you had to pay for wi-fi. The location and the feel of the hotel made that seem inconsequential. You could stay here solo, with friends, with family and in large groups...

We stayed in one of the chalets that sleeps 6 and has a full kitchen. The best thing about the hotel/unit was the location and the view. Our porch had full view of Mtns Tongariro and Ngauruhoe. 20 steps behind our cabin, you could see snow-capped Ruapehu. It's literally next to the start of the tracks to Taranaki Falls and...

I stayed at one of the chalets which have a fantastic view of Mt Ngauruhoe, especially in the morning and evening when it is not too cloudy. The resort is also the start of the walk to Taranaki Falls. The chalet is clean and well presented.

Alpine Resort is a typical backpacker hotel. Little old fashioned. Very tight. No place for your suitcase. Yes, there is a free outside and inside spa. Yes there is a free gym. The views could be stunning if there are no clouds. Beautiful starting point for walks. Good restaurant with Nice balcony and great views. Plus wood fire! Friendly staff.

I wish I could say something positive about this place, it was a hostel like feel with limited facilities, overpriced wifi which didn't work in all the buildings anyway. The food was ok... the rooms are basic and old with not much love. The showers would lose hot water when someone else got into the shower - The staff weren't...

Stayed here whilst travelling up the northern island of New Zealand. The views were stunning at this hotel, whilst it's no frills. It is clean and comfortable as well as being close to some very good hiking trails around Whakapapa. Food was excellent and they went above and beyond for my coeliac partner.

This hotel was passable at best. We just stayed one night to start a hike the next morning and found that, despite what their website indicates, they offered no free wifi and have no possibility of a late checkout. The hotel bar closed an hour before it was advertised to do so and didn't have working beer taps. If I...

The Skotel offers a range of accommodation types and I can't comment on the others: I stayed in one of the backpacker rooms, which has three bunks. Might be a little cosy for three people but for two it was adequate and comfortable, with communal kitchenette and bathrooms just down the corridor. Staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The restaurant...

Always an amazing experience as each visit can be different, its always advisable to check the weekly weather report for extreme snowfall blizzards as the main ski slope maybe closed for the experienced skiiers but lots of activities available on the lower valley also called the Happy vally, huge cafetaria, activity and enthusiasts who want to learn skiing, instructors can...

As part of the Top Deck tour in north island of NZ, we stopped and stayed here for two days, and was already prearranged by them. I am very impressed with the place, if you subtract the natural elements of being about 1100 metres above sea level, and the wind that comes along with it. We stayed in a chalet...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Skotel was established in the early 60s by a group of keen skiers who wanted the convenience of accommodation close to the ski-fields but more comfort than the ski lodges of that time. In 1986 it underwent a major expansion with the addition of restaurant, bar and other facilities. The old part of the building became the backpacker’s wing. Skotel has maintained its friendly informal atmosphere but now provides Qualmark three star accommodation and the exciting cuisine experiences of our new dinner menu. ... more   less
