The staff, facilities, and attention to detail were amazing. The barman Nadesh makes EXCELLENT drinks. Ask for an absenth with apple cider. Very skilled. The views were amazing. We booked a Chalet, very warm. Has cooking equipment (stive but no oven) - purchase your groceries for your stay before you get to Whakapapa. It will save you a small fortune... More

We had one night at the Skotel resort on the edge of Whakapapa. The people there were friendly, and the meal we had was excellent. They cater well for children who even have their own buffet. The room was really warm - ONE thing worth mentioning though is the walls are very thin and you can hear what is going... More

We stayed two nights and did the alpine crossing in between in the winter. Our room was very comfortable for two people and quite warm. The bathrooms were clean and spacious. The hot tub was a nice touch; just make sure to reserve your time. Wifi costs extra $5/day.

We booked a self contained cabin for our family so we could go to cook our own meals. The cabin was simple but clean and was serviced each day. It was a bit cold at night with only 3 wall heaters - electric blankets would have helped. We enjoyed a drink at the bar after day out sightseeing.

We stayed in the cabins. The cabins are in need of an upgrade urgently. Eg carpets are so old they have stretched and can't be straightened so you have this wrinkled effect. Carpets are also worn through. Shower was small. Kitchen equipment was dirty and very old. Staff at reception need a course in customer service-not welcoming at all. Very... More

Stayed in a double room with tiny en suite in the 300 wing. Tiny room, cold and hard to heat (the little wall heaters are not really up to the job and this was on a cool night so don't know how they cope when it's really cold!) and NOiSY! Kids running around all evening and you can hear every... More

We were happy we went with the Skotel Hotel. We stayed there with our kids (2 and 8) and had a room with a Queen and a twin/single. The room itself was quite small, and it was cold outside (late June), but luckily they other things to do in the hotel itself. Several times each we visited the arcade room... More

After reading so many good reviews, I had high expectations for this place. However, expectations were not met. Starting out with something positive...there are laundry facilities which we were lucky to be around the corner from, so it was nice to be able to quickly jump over to switch our load. Their food is ok(don't order the lamb as it... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Skotel was established in the early 60s by a group of keen skiers who wanted the convenience of accommodation close to the ski-fields but more comfort than the ski lodges of that time. In 1986 it underwent a major expansion with the addition of restaurant, bar and other facilities. The old part of the building became the backpacker’s wing. Skotel has maintained its friendly informal atmosphere but now provides Qualmark three star accommodation and the exciting cuisine experiences of our new dinner menu. ... more   less
