Guardia del Monte is truly a little piece of paradise. Sitting atop the hill it's built on looking down on the lake with the humming birds humming around you, it really feels like there's no where better on earth. The horse riding (which was fine for a total beginner like me) takes you out to see some amazing bird life... More

A real taste of the profound beauty of the Uruguayan countryside and the gaucho way of life. Lovely dueña Alicia knows the history of the region, natural and otherwise, very well. The nearby lagoon's birdlife is amazing, and humming birds dart in and out of flowers by the terrace as you're having your second cup of coffee for the day.... More

true experience of Uruguay's farm lifestyle! its unique location close to the lake, forrest, palm, beaches and historical places gives you the right combination for a well rounded sightseeing plus historical experience. run by its owner, history lessons included and great staff and food for an amazing 360 experience; a must if you go to Rocha!

We stayed at Guardia del Monte for 2 nights and wish we had stayed for a week. Alicia ,the owner, is a delightful person a wonderful hostess. The meals were excellent. Breakfast was served outside overlooked the lake. The estancia sits on a knoll and has 360 degree views of the country, lake and distant dunes. Carlos the gaucho took... More

We spent 3 nights at this marvelous place in January. We had really been looking forward to stay at a genuine estancia and finally decided to visit Guardia del Monte. We had very high expectations and they all were fulfilled! Everything was to our satisfaction, the horses, (I love Tarek), Carlos calmness and professional instructions, Alicia with her lovely welcoming... More

We stayed there for one night only but loved the place. Alicia is a charming host who will willingly tell you about the story of the estancia and guide you through the quite unique ombu forest in Uruguay. She also offers water and delicious tea after the walks. We went horse riding aroun the beautiful property. We were not experienced... More

It is hard to find enough superlatives to describe this place. I have wanted to go to Uruguay for a long time, looking for the beautiful countryside, the people, the birds, and overall - the horses!! Guardia del Monte delivered in every respect, and then some. It was one of those very memorable instances when reality exceeds expectations. The property... More

The estancia is located 10 km down an unpaved road off Ruta #9, on the border of the Castillos Lagoon. On arrival, we were served tea on the brick patio that overlooked the wetlands below in the distance. This property has had a significant historical importance since the 18th century and has been in the owner's family dating back to... More

No need to repeat the positive descriptions of the estancia and the proprietor and host, Alicia, as they tell the story accurately. We arrived mid-February, just after three weeks of unusually heavy rain for Summer time and much of the low-lying fields were under water. However, we still had great horseback rides, often wading through the shallow water. The horses... More

We spent three nights in February, the landscape is stunning, with green plains that extend to the horizon, palm tree forests, and unique Ombu forests. You constantly run into all sorts of wildlife, including nandus, giant lizards, and bird life we had never seen before. The is a huge lake where it is apparently possible to fish and canoe. We...
