El Monte Sustainable Lodge is an ecotourism destination in every sense of the word. We emphasize nature here at El Monte, in the form of birdwatching and observation of wildlife in general. Aside from the natural focus of our lodge, we also supply many of the vegetables, eggs and more from our organic garden. Most of our energy is supplied by a microhydro plant. We are located in a 110 acre reserve that is close to the Mindo-Nambillo Reserve of over 40,000 acres. At only 3 kilometers from the town of Mindo we are within access of many the activities, such as the Butterfly Garden, Ziplines, White-water Tubing, waterfalls and more.

This is a unique place - starting with a surprise ride over a gushing river to the beautiful grounds of the lodge. There are only six cabins but they are very spacious and only a short walk to the main area where the most delicious meals are served at three set times of the day. Eating all together gives guests the opportunity to meet each other. Umbrellas and wellington boots are provided and the latter offer good protection when walking in the forest. Our two night stay included meeting at 6.30 am to see the birds and admire their amazing colours. A hike plus chair lift ride kept us fit and busy the first day and the following day Tom, the owner, took us on a walking tour of the gounds, including a huge kitchen garden and workshops. He was also a mine of information about the forest itself, the trees, flowers and insects. El Monte is about a two hour drive from Quito, well worth a visit for 2 or 3 nights.

Myself and three friends recently stayed at El Monte for 2 nights and 3 days and I cannot rate this wonderful lodge and location highly enough! We were so wonderfully taken care of and fed. The meals were phenomenal and our guide during that time (Moses) was incredibly patient, welcoming and knowledgable about the lodge and the ecosystem surrounding it. We spent evenings by the fire in the main lodge and listened to the sounds of the Rio Mindo as we slept. During the day we were taken tubing, zip lining, hiking and exploring throughout the cloud forest of Mindo. Moses was readily available to us and kindly attended to our every whim. We are all collectively in awe of this place and I will be recommending it to any fellow traveller and friend I can! Moses, you're a true eco warrior and I hope to visit this wonderful place again one day soon!

I first visited El Monte in 2013 and then returned in May 2022 (I'm embarrassed it's taken so long to write this!)

I still feel that El Monte does green tourism and sustainability better than any other location I've ever been to. Everything is done with minimal impact, consideration for nature and the exceptional place where they are.

From the first email contact until leaving the transport to head out, everything goes so smoothly. Tom, Mariela, and their team are so professional and friendly, and treat everyone with so much respect and love.

Getting up very early to see the Cock of the Rock lek is definitely not to be missed by bird lovers, and worth it. We went to a new lek that was not a long hike (though a bit steep) that allowed me to get so close to these amazing birds that my cell phone took amazing pictures, this is not common with these birds.

Returning here after nearly a decade was like coming home. The bird life is absolutely amazing, the food is sustainable and always delicious, their guides are incredible at spotting and identifying birds and other wildlife.

I happened to return to my same cabana, 3 I believe, right along the river. It's spacious and the sound of the river is amazing.

There are bugs, ants, some spiders around but you are in the middle of the jungle, so it's nature. My room was comfortable and very clean. The manual cable car across the river to enter is a very fun way to enter the amazing world of El Monte. Lucia was my guide the entire time and showed me so much.

Mindo is full of activities for every interest. When it is raining heavily, which can happen, just relaxing in the common area to take everything in is my favorite thing to do. El Monte feels like a world away, even from Mindo town itself.

Transport from Quito takes a few hours but Willan is a fantastic and friendly driver who knows every turn and pothole, and I felt very safe in his capable hands and driving skills.

Thank you El Monte, you once again delivered the best possible experience I could imagine. I hope to be fortunate enough to return again.

My husband and I and our adult son and his 6 year old son traveled to this idyllic location 2 weeks ago. The hosts, Tom and Mariela and their awesome staff were so gracious and eager to assist in helping to make this a memorable vacation. They helped set up adventures that were enjoyed by the 6 year old and the 66 year old! Thank you Tom and Mariela for the trip of a lifetime!

A beautiful lodge run by a lovely couple. Thoughtfully designed with three delicious meals daily and a superb staff. We had our own guide every day ( thank you Lucia!) who was very open to anything we wished to do and with her help saw 85 species of birds in 4 days!
Our individual cabin was very comfortable and spacious and the main lodge where one goes for meals is breathtakingly beautiful.
The grounds that the lodge sits on is lush and has several hiking trails and we managed to see several impressive birds right on the property. ( golden headed quetzal, crested guan and Choco toucan)
Tom and Mariela, the hosts, couldn’t have been more helpful and kind and we really felt as if we were visiting friends.
If you are planing on going birding in Mindo, I can’t imagine a more tranquil and lovely spot to call home for a few days.

After our Galapagos adventure, our family of three enjoyed an incredible two-day extension at El Monte Mindo. The lodge's architecture and the natural beauty of its surroundings were astounding. Expansive windows and open spaces seamlessly brought us closer to nature. The communal area proved perfect for a variety of activities such as dining, birdwatching, reading, and simply unwinding.
What truly stood out was the expertise of our nature guide. His remarkable talent for spotting even the tiniest camouflaged creatures enriched our experience. Guiding us through captivating hikes, he introduced us to a multitude of fascinating animals while educating us about their biology.
The accommodations managed to strike a perfect balance between comfort and ecological responsibility. Their coziness retained a rustic charm, all while embracing a mindful approach to sustainability. Our stay was truly exceptional!

We spent 2 wonderful nights at El Monte after a Galapagos trip. Our lodge room was huge and beautifully decorated. The food was probably the nicest we had in Ecuador- really great home cooked meals. Tom was a wonderful host, and very helpful arranging a driver to pick us up from the airport and take us on to Papallacta afterwards. William, the driver, felt very safe on the extremely winding roads! George/Jorge was a great guide on one day and Tom took us on a lovely walk to the waterfalls the next day.
El Monte was a little bit of paradise- really beautiful buildings and grounds, and very peaceful, while still being in easy reach of Mindo and lots of activities if you want to venture beyond the walks around the property.

In terms of other activities, we particularly enjoyed the chocolate tour in Mindo on a rainy morning.

Amazing michelin level vegetarian food, attentive and kind staff, Tom and his family are the loveliest people you could ever meet. The lodges are something out of architectural digest. Tom the owner truly loves and cares for the environments, we truly loved the nature walks we may have even discovered new insect species. This is a 100% sustainable stay, it leaves an impression in your mind and heart, your soul will thank you.

El Monte is a sustainable lodge in practice, run by a lovely couple Tom and Mariela. Tom looked after booking a driver to and from the resort which was extremely helpful. While we are not vegetarian, we were willing to go without red meat for three days and the meals were fantastic. I have a fish allergy which I mentioned at booking. This was remembered without any prompting during meals. As the regular guide was away on vacation, Tom offered every day to take us on different walks which we thought was very gracious and kind. Our individual cabin was huge and comfortable. I would highly recommend staying at El Monte Sustainable Lodge.

El Monte is a peaceful and secluded ecolodge accessed by crossing a narrow swift-moving river via a pulley system on a suspended bench - great fun! The delightful owners, Tom and Mariela, have built a remarkably beautiful set of comfortable cabanas and a large inviting "big house" where meals are served, with access to the internet, a fire pit, lounge areas, English book cases, etc. The highlight of our 2 1/2 day visit was the time we spent with the personable guide, George, who greeted us upon our arrival. Every day he took us on bird walks (found the Quetzal!), visits to a hummingbird haven, butterfly farm, chocolate factory, and the long chairlift ride over the canopy of the cloud forest to a waterfall hike was especially enjoyable. It was hard to say goodbye!

What is the source of the drinking water at the lodge? Do we drink bottled water only? thank you
Answer from Bushmaster
The below response is incorrect. The water used in the kitchen is from a natural spring on the property. It is filtered treated, and tested to be safe. This is the same water provided for drinking to customers. The running water in the cabañas are from a different spring on site and also is filtered

Yes. There are lamps next to the bed. But email Tom at the lodge. He's super nice and certainly can clarify if the cabins meet your requirements. It's a great place to stay!

Do you need to pre book any trips/walks its a guide?
Answer from Dan M
Yonkers, New York, United States34 contributions
My wife and I happened to be the only visitors at the time so we had the guide to ourselves (luckily). I would imagine if more people were there, you would have to do a good job of planning either upon arrival (probably a more practical way due to weather and scheduling) compared to in advance. I found it was best to discuss all of the options in advance and upon arrival, come up with a plan in order to maximize what you did and scheduling. You'll have a great time either way!
