We spent two nights at the Sachatamia Lodge as a base from which to go birding, as part of a trip we'd arranged with an independent guide. The rooms are excellent and the food very good as well (especially the trout), but the standout is Johnny. He was amazing and did just about everything. When our guide had vehicle issues, Johnny agreed to drive us (with our guide) for about 8 hours the next day so that we didn't miss anything on our itinerary. When we set out in the morning, only to run into stopped traffic due to a landslide, Johnny stayed with the car while the landslide got cleared, enabling us to travel by foot with our guide to the lek we were trying to reach. After he met back up with us several hours later, he was helpful in pointing out additional birds. We also arranged for him to give us an evening tour at Sachatamia. He knew that my wife wanted to see frogs in particular, and he was amazing at locating them (especially the tiny Pinocchio frog) and very patient at finding the scientific names of each species for us. He also pointed out lots of other great evening critters--insects, lizards, and so forth. Oh, and in addition to all this, he was our waiter each night at the lodge. I think he's just superman! Our stay at Sachatamia would have been fine if we hadn't encountered Johnny, but his kind, patient, flexible, and accommodating service--coupled with a willingness to go way above and beyond to make sure we had an amazing experience--really set this part of our trip apart.…
In this beautifull part of Ecuador, the Cloud Forest, only 1 1/2 hour from Quito we visited with friends yesterday and for lunch time we came to Sachatamia Restaurant that was a nice experience full of fun and good food, good service and ambiance.
Rooms have portable heaters and dehumidifiers. They are clean and spacious. Food is great. Service superb. Lots of birds with feeders in several areas. And birds in the forests with hiking trails available. Good idea to wear rubber boots because sometimes the trails are muddy. The cottages are set apart from the main area and it's a comfortable walk past some of the feeders to reach the reception/dining area. Unlike some of the others who reviewed this property, I was not aware of mustiness in the room.
The loaction is good, with lodges opening to the forest. The rooms were comfortable and clean, but smelt a little musty. The food was fine, though perhaps rather pricey. The pool and hot tub were lovely. I felt that the hotel was rather over-priced for its offering.
Theres nothing about this lodge to dislike. The cabin was well maintained and very clean. Lovely view out of the window deep in the forest. There is quite a climb from the cabin to the restaurant but through beautiful grounds. The Humming bird feeders are always kept full and the bananas are kept replenished to attract many other birds, Aggouti and squirrels. The restaurant is pleasant with a fire in the evening. The food was ample and delicious and people's dietry needs were met, including additional snacks for a diabetic. Coffee and tea available. This is paradise in the rain forest and does it rain!!
