The only reason this isn't a 1-star review is because of the staff, they are wonderful people. Where to begin. I spend 7-years working in the travel industry and sending visitors to the Grand Wailea, it's simply no longer the great property it used to be. I always wanted to stay here, but it really was a huge disappointment. We did visit during a period of renovation but we felt the website was misleading in descriptions of what would be closed. We spent 8nts here and I only wish we had booked elsewhere. There were 3 of us, my wife, our 10yr old son, and myself. To start with, upon arrival the signature waterfalls at this property are all off, and appear to have been off for quite some time. No lei greeting, not much of a line at check-in but the process still took 30 minutes. We had booked an ocean view king room and were given 5081, after settling in and unpacking, we were asked to move due to a mix up. We thought a higher room would have a better view so we went with 8081 which was offered. Note that 5081 had a shared lanai with the adjacent room which was odd anyway. We headed down to Botero Lounge, the lobby bar which is one of only two restaurants open to eat at. They serve mostly sushi. It was hands down the worst sushi I've ever had. Salmon that was brown on the edges like it had been in the sun too long and crab that was so fishy it had to have been bad. The other dining option is the newly opened Olivine. We chose not to eat here because, well, we didn't come to Maui for Italian food and the reviews are awful. The only other options for food are 7am-10am buffet at $50+ per person and Loulu, a fast food like stop in the shopping area. Also, there is a pool dining option that is open from 11am-3pm with a limited menu. The "food truck" on site is closed. The signature restaurant HumuHumu is also closed. Keep in mind that everything at the Grand Wailea is priced... grandly. $20-$25 per drink, $30 for a hot dog, $30 and up for most food options. This isn't abnormal for this area and didn't come as a surprise, but based on the quality of this resort it doesn't sit well for a good value. For example no kids menu per say, but at the 4 Seasons next door you can get a kids meal for $12. Dining options at the 4 seasons by the way were AMAZING. Great food, great service, great property. In general, we felt as though everything at the Grand Wailea required an upcharge. Expensive valet fee daily, resort fee daily, lacking food/dining options. Bed in our room wasn't comfortable, this can be preference though. Couldn't get firm pillows even though they tried to provide foam pillows for us. After a week of $1000 per night stays you'd think we could get a late check-out. They gave us an hour longer and wanted us to pay $150 for more when the property is a ghost town due to the fires in Lahaina. Spa is closed. Grounds are well kept but hotel itself is tired and worn. Lazy river was open but no current, water elevator is closed, several pools closed, several slides closed, no waterfalls on. Had to relocate from one pool area due to a spill from the construction zone one day. Food is bad, overpriced, and lacks variety. My advice, if you're considering this property look to the neighboring 4 Seasons or Fairmont, or even Marriott. Our family was very disappointed with our stay. Considering we spent close to $15,000 for an 8-night stay - I can't help but feel really bad. Wailea is a beautiful place to visit, and the Hawaiian people are some of the kindest you'll ever meet.…
