We stayed three night in the amazingly placed iglo rooms. Positioned at the end of a long walkway towards the sea and on the sloping cliffs with an extraordinary view towards the ocean and the many icebergs. Unfortunately the interior was worn out, and it felt like being in an old camper. Apart from two lamps not working (mentioned first morning but never repaired during the 3 days), water not running out of the bathroom sink, the multiplex wainscotting was suffering from leakage stains and unintended bulging almost pulling the screws out of their position. Madrasses thin PUR with little comfort beyond camping. However, the serving in the restaurant was fine to delicate, although the gourmet restaurant Ferdinand was closed due to a stomach illness of the chef. We met great people at the place so despite the hassle we enjoyed our stay.

To everyone reading this that has never gone to Greenland before, please read the polarphile blog and do some substantial research prior to booking your hotels. If you are joining a package or group tour then do not worry about this. Hotel Arctic is probably the nicest hotel in all of Greenland. The only one that seems to be nearly identical is Hotel Qaqortoq in the far south. You are paying nearly 300-500 USD per night minimum for a hotel that is probably a nice and modern 3 star in the USA. If you're in Greenland, you've got to adjust your expectations that most hotels are a 1.5 to 2 stars that will set you back 200-300 USD per night in the high season. So this place is high luxury by comparison. You don't feel like you're in Greenland until you look out your window and see the icebergs. Not only is this the nicest hotel in Greenland minus a few niche experiences out there (Ilimanaq Lodge) for instance and its twin Hotel Qaqortoq, but it is one of the most expensive. However, all that said, is it worth it? It depends. Are you someone that likes seclusion? Do you like to be near the airport? Do you like prestige? Do you like an OK restaurant at a price? Then this is the place for you. I've stayed at all the major hotels in Ilulissat over many trips so I can say that I prefer Icefiord Apartments near the center of the town because the location is so good. I don't have a problem with Hotel Arctic at all besides the location being rather far from town and the restaurant's food is kind of tasteless for a high cost. By comparison, Hotel Icefiord is excellent food but the hotel rooms are not great and it is even farther away from town center. Everything thing besides that is fantastic and world class. It is just a matter of whether you want to walk a mile to your attraction meeting point at World of Greenland /wait in the cold for the shuttle or walk to your accommodation 700 feet away. I prefer being close and near the grocery stores, shops, tour offices, and the like but I sacrifice luxury and the stunning views that Arctic has to offer.

We stayed in the superior room no. 710 which had an excellent view! we stayed from 19th to 21st June. Please do take the mosquito repellant which was offered at the reception as soon as we checked in. This is probably the best hotel on count of amenities in Ilulissat. The rooms have an excellent view of the water, which is peppered with small ice . However the water is a bit away so we see a lot of land and rocks before the water, we visited Icefiord hotel also, which is much closer to the water, hence has a better view. if you book rooms on the lower floors, you may not have a view of the water as it is at a level below the rocks. We had a few drinks and dinner at the restaurant in Arctic and i must say the food was excellent - i have never had a better lamb steak in my life. A surprising part of the food was the butter which came along with the bread, it was green (possibly because of the herbs) but it had us asking for more. We went for breakfast with a little trepidation since we had read that the area was crowded, however, we didn’t encounter anything such as that, in fact it was very relaxed. The hotel offered an airport shuttle for pickup and drop (the hotel is hardly 5 minutes drive from the airport). However the shuttle to the town was not very well organised, it didn’t follow a timetable, we stayed there for 2 nights, and could never get the shuttle either to the city centre or back. The taxis cost us about 80 DKK. The housekeeping was excellent, the room had become warm, but we could open the windows to make it bearable, the windows were equipped with nets to keep the ubiquitous mosquitoes out. If you are finicky about sleeping in a darkened room, forget it because the curtains could darken the room enough, although for us it wasn’t a problem. The walk to the centre is a bit long and not very pleasant. On the whole our stay was pleasant and would love to come back.

I was trying to decide between two hotels- both appear the same distance from the center of town (ie tour meeting point) and chose Hotel Arctic because it offers a shuttle to town. I only used the shuttle once during my four days though, because they don’t run regularly and there was confusion for pickup times. Taxis to center of town cost about 60 DKK. There was variation with the level of service of the front desk staff- the morning one seemed helpful but the evening one did not seem to want to be bothered; both seemed tired and overworked. My friend told me the staff at the other hotel were much more helpful. The hotel does tend to cater to loud large (30+) groups of ill-mannered tourists, making breakfast time chaotic with food running out frequently and staff could not keep up with cleaning the tables. The food at Olo is very good and the food at Arctic Wine Bar is superb. All rooms seem to have fantastic view. I had an”Outside Room” turns how this is at the lowest floor of one of the buildings with a door that walks out directly on to a patio with a view. These rooms might be more prone to mosquitos entering. I was worried because these patios were designated smoking areas although I never saw people smoking. If you stay in an outside room all you have is the door and no other windows to open for air so you can’t leave it open while you sleep (doesn’t lock) the room itself is modern and new. Housekeeping is minimum. TIP: make sure everything works on room check in and get everything fixed right away so you are not left with surprises later on. Having said all that I’d probably stay in Hotel Arctic again as it’s likely the nicest one in Ilulissat and there are no loud late night parties going on around here.

We had a good sized quiet room with adequate storage and hanging space and fantastic views of Disko Bay and the icebergs. The staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast choice was good on our first day but several things were not available on the second day. The town is a slightly challenging 20-minute walk from the hotel (no continuous pavement) and the hotel runs a shuttle bus when trips to/from the airport permit.
