Hotel Arctic punches way above its weight, with engaged employees delivering exceptional service as well as suites commanding a captivating view of the icefjord.

Checking in was smooth and efficient, and the gentleman who managed it secured a reservation at a fully booked restaurant downtown. Upon learning that no cabs were available and that the shuttle schedule wouldn’t get me to the restaurant in time, he offered to drive me there himself.

The hotel restaurant was a lively scene, with a colorful cast of characters gathering around the bar and on the terrace outside. Staff were uniformly warm and welcoming, with some inventive local dishes rounding out the menu.

Upon entering the suite I was thoroughly enchanted by the view of the icefjord. The decor suited the space and setting, with lots of well thought out little touches that enhanced the stay.

Looking forward to returning, this is an excellent hotel with great management.

This property is owned by the Air Greenland group, so if you book with Greenland travel agency and visiting Ilulissat, you're likely to be lodged here. They run a shuttle from the airport & to the centre of town, both walkable distances, but nice to have in cold weather. Rooms are adequate size for 2 persons. We had a 'kayak' room with stunning view of the bay. All amenities present, spotlessly clean, ample storage space, quiet & good beds. Breakfast, again with marvellous view of town & bay is exactly how it should be. A deck outside (for summer, I guess) with BBQ & binoculars. Smoking room separate outside. Restaurant is above average, small menu, fresh, super tasty food. Big lobby, exemplary staff, conference facilities, prices all reasonable. We felt quite at home here.

Our experience was identical to that of the previous comprehensive TA reviewer, poleinahole, a review that is 100% fair based on our experience of staying four nights. Room 711 was wonderful. 421 OK. Restaurant pretty good but inconsistent. Ilulissat and Disko bay is such a staggeringly marvellous location that it's worth accepting some compromises. All our experience from 7 nights in Greenland suggests such compromises in hotel and restaurant food quality and service is currently endemic. But the Country is so fabulous for the adventurous traveller that its totally worth it. If we went again [very unlikely] we would stay at the Arctic, but monitor the latest reviews of the better located Best Western [soulless and unfinished on our visit for a coffee] and Icefjord [boutiquey, very friendly and an excellent dinner visit].
We were very lucky with the weather, seeing everything from lots of warm sunshine through to dramatic Arctic fog
Essential to bring tons of the mosquito repellant you are most happy with- they were an absolute nightmare, but our favourite brand did keep them at bay

Hotel belongs to the same group as air Greenland and tour company Greenland Travel. There is no mention of this when booking the tour with Greenland Travel that they stay at their own hotel for half the days of an 8 day tour. Nothing much to do in Ilulisat, once you have seen the icebergs they all look the same.. There is no fridge in this hotel and the location is very far from town, shuttle buses are every hour to town for grocery run if you don’t want to eat at the overpriced restaurant at the hotel. Sometimes whether is so bad that you don’t want to go out of the hotel as visibility is very low. The hotel holds you captive to their only restaurant which is overpriced since it is so far from any other eateries. Also there is a sign at breakfast that does not allow you to take away any of the breakfast food. There is no fridge in the room which prevents you from buying any food from the supermarket that needs to be chilled. There is a small gym.

Hotel Arctic Ilulissat does not live up to a 4 star ranking:

1) I was originally placed at the end of a hall with a strong smell from the laundry and trash nearby. It took 2 days for a room away from that area to open up and the hotel made no effort to assist with the move.

2) I've had to request refills of shampoo and coffee, which were not replenished after cleaning; only half the waste baskets were emptied on any given day.

3) Despite the poor experience the hotel was not willing to make even a small gesture to improve the experience, e.g. refusing a slightly later than 10 am checkout when check-in is at 3 pm.*

*Ulrik Amdi, the hotel manager, did not address the point that of not all rooms can be cleaned at once, nor does it take 5 hours to clean a room.

While I plan to return to Greenland, I would not stay here again, nor can I recommend this hotel to anyone who plans to visit.

I am checking out tomorrow, so there is still time to improve the experience in which case I will update this review.

The restaurant is very good. The quality of the food and drinks is very good and the service excellent. However, the hotel itself leaves much to be desired. You charge very high prices and get a very modest service, which is also quite rude and unfriendly. Here, the demand for what is offered clearly differs due to the price. If you call up prices of up to 600 € a night, you also have to offer the service for it. Unfortunately, that has not happened.

I spent a few nights in this hotel in a beautiful location. From my terrace I had a fantastic view of the bay and the icebergs floating there. Very nice and clean room, comfortable beds, comfortable bathroom and very “stylish”. Underfloor heating in the bathroom is pleasant, the water coming out of the walk-in shower dries immediately. Good wifi connection.
Great breakfast with good bread and also fresh fruit, plenty of choice.
I also had dinner twice at the hotel restaurant, even for me as a vegetarian there were options. Wonderful views of the bay also from the many windows of the restaurant!
The hotel is located on a hill a bit away (about 20 minutes walk) from the town center. A minibus transfer was always available for organized excursions. The hotel itself also offers a shuttle to the port, downtown and airport.

we booked a superior room witch had a beautiful view and was very comfortable. The interior of the hotel is very modern and stylish. Friendly staff and great breakfast. There is a shuttle service which drives you to and from town since the walk back and forth is quite long.

The hotel is ok, modern and with nice and clean rooms. Chose superior Rome with sea view no 508 and there was what should be.
Service at reception etc. was also ok.
The problem is the restaurant….
Breakfast:
Despite the fact that there is a very fine espresso coffee machine in the restaurant, you can only get half sad alm. coffee. The explanation is that the servants only meet at 11.00!!! So give the breakfast staff a 30 min. course in use.
The bread served is of a type that came from Danish bakers in the 70s in the province. White bread completely without taste and structure, in such a fine hotel there should be a croissant - in case they don't bother to eat it themselves, they are excellently available frozen from Denmark.

Lunch/dinner
The menu card is strangely out of step with the present. Filled with indifferent burgers, fried dishes and steaks.
In return, the prices were sky high, even by Greenlandic conditions, ex. boring burger DKK 250

Likely to be cold, though Hotel is well insulated and you can wear ordinary dress whilst inside. Will depend on your activities but be aware of wind-chill factor, very significant ice from the glacier next to the town, that the air will feel drier so keep rehydrated. Basically you'll need full arctic/antarctic clothing if you're going out . Check the forecast before you leave if you can. Treat the weather seriously - it can change - this is a hostile climate. Be aware if you are flying in it can be difficult for planes to land sometimes due to cloud cover. Trip organisers based in Hotel, and Hotel itself are well geared up to advise you at all times.

To be honest I don't know. But I would say no as I don't think it will be well perceived. Moreover, there are huge and aggressive mosquito there (in summer) so no one would tempt this and then it is quite cold even in summer. But i guess you could do this on a private boat (away from mosquito)
