This is the finest Choice hotel I’ve ever stayed in.beautiful serene setting, comfortable and cozy accommodations, on-site bar and restaurant. A tremendous value you should not miss! Only one negative. The website indicated the bar restaurant was not open until June 1. We decided to grab dinner in Keystone before checking in. Much to our surprise the bar restaurant was open. I would suggest you phone the Lodge before your arrival to verify what amenities are really open since obviously the website isn’t being updated as often as it should.

Hotel's Favorite
One of the best locations of any hotel in the area. Very close to a lot of shops and attractions. There is a ATV Rental place about 2 miles up the road and lots of shops and restaurants within about half a mile. Hotel was 8/10 cleanliness. I used a black light. The stuff you care about was clean. The pillows and sheets were clean. The red designer cover wasn’t clean though and the worst was the iron board, wouldn’t recommend using it. The remote, fridge and microwave also failed the black light test. But honestly spent very little time in the hotel just a few hours of sleep and back to exploring the area. The view out the room wasn’t great just backed up to a hill. The staff don’t enter the room each day which is fine for me because I always put a do not disturb sign anyways and prefer nobody to enter. My room didn’t have a safe which was surprising. The clock had the only USB charger but it was standard USB. No USB C charging locations so be sure to bring a converter. The lobby was beautiful. Staff made some great recommendations on food. Didn’t have a chance to try their breakfast or bar. Overall would recommend for location, price and the key things that you would want to be cleaned were cleaned.

I'm not sure what took me so long to write this review, but here it is. We were here in August of 2022, it is excellent. I'd say that is by far the best place to stay in the Mount Rushmore area. You need to go there with the mindset that (as my friend thankfully told me) there's nothing fancy there. There are a few hotels in Keystone, which are basically on one of the two main roads and have a building and parking lot. K Bar is up the road a bit and has beautiful grounds and a big parking area and Oh, a view of Mount Rushmore. Pay the extra money and stay in one of the Mount Rushmore facing rooms. We were on the first floor and had a nice little balcony to sit, stargaze, admire George and bit of Teddy and some very nice scenery. To be fair, the rooms are a bit dated and basic but they're clean and seem safe. There's places to charge your phone near the bed which was handy. They include breakfast which is nice. It has the basics like cereal, bagels, waffles, yogurt and a few different hot offerings each day. It's on the other side of the lobby building, so you do have to walk bit but nothing ridiculous. There's lots of nature everywhere is nice. The lobby has coffee and tea which is nice. They have weddings down on the large lawn which seems nice and you can hear the train whistle from the hotel. There was a wedding going on one night while we were there, it was more crowded than the other nights, but we were able to park no problem and had lots of people say hello as they passed our balcony. I would stay at K Bar again without a second thought. Highly recommend!

Very clean & quiet. Easy checkin, our room had a great view of Mt Rushmore. Close to Custer state park, Crazy horse and Mt Rushmore the town of Keystone has shops and restaurants and the Presidential wax museum. A nice breakfast with the usual eggs, pancakes etc also a fire pit in the evenings. Neatened in the mountain you can’t go wrong here

Overall we would stay here again, as it was a unique experience. However, we did encounter some flaws during our visit. One of the beds had black grease stains on it, so we had to sleep in the bed closest to the hallway. We were staying in the off season, so luckily it wasn't too noisy in the halls, so this wasn't a huge issue. We had a live cricket in our bathroom, but I suppose the Lodge is in the wilderness. I did not like that dogs were allowed in the breakfast area. For instance, in the same area that guests were getting their eggs, next to them was a woman with her dog on a leash- and giving himself a good shake while near the food. Breakfast staff didn't seem to think this was an issue. The woman who checks guests in is nice, but tells every-single-guest to go to the Powder House for dinner, and even pulls out a full menu and flips the pages for you. Suggesting a place is one thing, but her forcefulness almost made us feel like we were being sold a used car. The pancake machine in the breakfast area also needs to be fixed. The machine gives you two pancakes, however they were borderline raw, and I had to microwave them, because they were ice cold. I'm assuming this is a frequent issue, because the microwave was full of pancake debris. Parking could also be very limited, forcing you to walk quite a way to your room. Also, if you stay on the ground level in the main house, you have to go up one floor to find an ice machine. We did like that they offered coffee all day long, and their coffee was very good. We also liked that the room had a Keurig coffee machine, and the deck which overlooked George Washington's profile was a once in a lifetime experience. I think we expected a bit more for the price, but would definitely try this place again.

This property is a true escape from the daily rigor. Beautiful scenery, beautiful property, great room! The view from my balcony was incredible! I was able to see George on Mount Rushmore and especially enjoyed the evening when they put the lights on George. The staff encountered were all friendly and helpful. The breakfast was delicious and the snacks during our meeting were tasty. Love the chocolate chip cookies. I am looking forward to a return visit. Travel safe…

Nice hotel in the forest, clean, great view. Good breakfast for a hotel. Visited a little off season so things were closed. Would be a great location for a family during high season. They have a fire at night which is a nice way to meet other travelers

Staff is extremely friendly and willing to help with any needs. Location is great. Only a few miles to Mt. Rushmore. Room is very outdated. Shower head had hard water stains and bathroom vent thick with dust. We had to ask for shampoo and soap so small! We had to find a store to buy a bar of soap. My advice bring your own soap and shampoo. Keurig in room is a plus. Breakfast was good.

My wife and I stayed in K Bar S Lodge a week or so ago and found it clean and welcoming, if a bit 'rustic' (that was a plus for her). I don't recall them advertising it as overlooking Mt. Rushmore, and that's probably a good idea - while you could just see the monument from our second floor room balcony it was a distant view of only George Washington's profile - don't expect much and you won't be disappointed. Breakfast was good enough and the bar staff was friendly and generous. The only off-putting encounter was one I had with one of the front desk staff when I called a couple weeks prior to our visit. I had made original reservations for a King room many months in advance and upon re-checking the prices found that they had dropped significantly - about $175 total less for the two nights. When I decided it may be easier to rebook at the lower price directly a sleepy employee answered the call and did his obstinate best to not match the current price. "NO we have no Kings available" (umm I have one that I'm just trying to reprice - had this debate a few times before giving up), "NO switching to a Double Queen will be $250 a night" (this as their website is showing me $180 a night). Round and round we went as his responses became curter and less coherent - I gave up. I went online and easily rebooked our King room at the lower price and cancelled the older reservation - lesson learned. One more brief tip - while the nearby town of Keystone is cute and fun to look at we had no luck finding an appealing place to eat there - each and every restaurant appeared understaffed and we were greeted by many dirty tables. If you can eat in Rapid City you'll have better luck.

Like others have said, stay here because it's off by itself, quiet and it's nice enough. Nice grounds with room to roam around. Included breakfast is not much better than a Hampton or other chain hotel. They did have a gourmet coffee bar (not included) in the breakfast area so my wife was happy. Rooms are in two story buildings with eight to a floor so odds are slim you'll have hall noise at night. The place could use a freshening up in my opinion. It seemed just a bit drab but not bad. Something else to consider would be the Custer State Park lodges/cabins. I wish I had known about these. Check out Legion Lake Lodge for example.
