My daughter & I stayed in the Annie Tallent room for several nights last week & weekend. It was spacious & comfortable. Breakfast each morning & dessert every evening were excellent! Breakfast & dessert were out on the deck, overlooking Mt. Rushmore. It was great getting to know the other guests and the proprietors (Marilyn, her son, daughter-in-law, and 2 grandchildren). In the evenings, we would hear what everyone did that day and what their plans were for the next day. Marilyn was so sweet to give us maps and directions with the most scenic routes for each day's travels. The property is beautiful and so quiet. We saw deer feeding very nearby the deck one night as we sat outside. The weather was amazing; sunny and not too warm (with nearly no humidity) during the day, and cool in the evenings. We found lots of fun things to do, including sightseeing, hiking, Custer State Park, zip-lining, and the aerial adventure park. We spent so much time outside, soaking up the beautiful weather. On our drive home, we talked about the next time we will visit...we're ready to come back!…
It started snowing before we got there but the roads and directions were perfect. The house was great lodge stuff everywhere. Great history in the house and from the owner. She was great and food was amazing. We started in the Norbeck room King bed and Jacuzzi tub very nice and definitely recommend staying here close to all the sights and she will provide you with a map and directions to help map out your trip. Whenever I'm in this area again I will stay here.
Buffalo Rock Lodge is a great location to stay when visiting Mt. Rushmore, Custer State Park, Needles Highway, The Badlands, etc. Staying in this log house is a unique experience and Marilyn, the owner and hostess, has a wealth of information. She provides detailed maps and driving directions each day of your stay so that you know exactly what highlights of the area not to miss. Breakfast is served on the large patio or at a round table in the dining room. Marilyn enjoys sharing her knowledge of the area and information about her family's past.
The Buffalo Rock Lodge is probably the best bread and breakfast experience I have encountered anywhere. The lodge itself is very cool, constructed with huge exposed logs. It's a rustic yet solid and inviting structure. The beds are very comfortable and the cooked from scratch breakfast is superb. As if this isnt enough, the real pinnacle of the Buffalo Rock Lodge experience is the hostess-innkeeper-owner Marilyn. She offers unlimited advice and guidance on visiting Mt. Rushmore and the South Dakota environs, as well as just about any other topic you care to converse about. The positive energy connect with Marilyn allows for a truly outstanding experience!
I'll not repeat all the accolades from other reviews, but they are spot on. With Buffalo Rock Lodge you get so much more than just lodging and breakfast (which was incredible!). It is an experience in itself because of Marilyn Oakes. First of all, she is the granddaughter of C.C. Gideon (google him!) and has a deep, rich knowledge of everything South Dakota. Her stories are like living with the park ranger. Every morning when you sit down to her wonderful gourmet breakfast, you can pick her brain about everything you saw yesterday and what is ahead of you that day. Afterward, you "meet" at what she jokingly refers to the Command Table where she will give you her special directions (printed out, with a nice map, I might add) for a beautifully planned day, making sure you do the most scenic roads in the right direction at the perfect time of day. And, off you go! At night on the deck, looking up at Mt. Rushmore, you can share your experiences and get all sorts of insights from her vast "insider" experience. Your time in South Dakota will be so much richer than you could ever get anywhere else. We fell in love with South Dakota and Marilyn Oakes!…
