We really enjoyed our 3-night stay at the Powderhouse Lodge.

Their website has a map of different accommodations in varying price points. We chose the Trailblazer 59 cabin tucked way back on top of the hill. It gave us a lot of privacy with only one other cabin next to us. It had everything we could possibly need; full size fridge, stovetop, dishes, utensils, etc. Nice deck to unwind after a day of sightseeing. It’s an “old school” cabin which we were looking for, albeit an electric fireplace. Small complaint would be the thread barren towels, but there were plenty of them.

Although this cabin has 2 queen size beds, we would recommend it to couples or families with older children. If you want to be near the playground, pool or restaurant, it’s a bit of a walk up and down the hill. You can certainly drive, but parking seems to come at a premium.

Keystone is a good location in the Black Hills. Technically, the lodge is about a half mile+ from the edge of town, so you may be disappointed if you think you can walk to town from the lodge. I want to say maybe 5-minutes to Mt. Rushmore and close to other attractions. We were undecided between staying in Hill City or Keystone. After visiting, I think either location is good. We wanted the cabin atmosphere, with a restaurant that has good reviews (food & service was very good), so Powderhouse Lodge fit the bill. Seems Keystone may be more kid friendly than Hill City due to kid attractions nearby, but works for adults as well.

Everyone was extremely nice and polite. Would not hesitate to stay here again.

We stayed in duplex 43(one king) for two nights. We were happy they didn't provide maid service due to covid and was easy to get things if needed. Was nice and quiet. We were close to the pool and I was afraid of it being noisy but it wasn't. Our cabin was small but worked for my husband and myself. Was kind of congested coming back at night because of the restaurant which sorry to say because of the covid we didn't try. Would like to sometime. They have a small area in the office with local candies and fudge and post cards and I believe sweatshirts etc.. We tried the fudge ...it was delicious. Very creamy! There was a picnic table outside the duplex but was always being used by the others in the adjoining room so cant comment except that it was there. Would be nice to have two for a duplex.

We used the Powder House Lodge as our jumping off point to explore the area for 4 nights. I liked that they did not come into our cabin for daily service due to Covid. If we needed anything we asked the front desk and it was either given to us right then or delivered and left outside our room. The room had all the amenities we needed for a pleasant stay. It was very hot so the air conditioner was nice to have and worked well. It is very close to town and Mount Rushmore. Having the best restaurant in town on the property was an added bonus.

We always stop here to eat on our trips and decided to try a cabin this time It was a decent size cabin # 55 clean when we got there nice porch. with covid you get no housekeeping you leave a list out in the morning and they stuff a buch of it in a sack and leave it on porch outside. The negatives I guess this time where the staff this time usually super nice and friendly this time not even close.we got there and checked th e tv it wouldn't come on so we called the office and where talked to like we were stupid because we didn't check to see if it was plugged in 🤷‍♂️. I've never had to plug in a tv while staying in a hotel, cabin excetra. maybe they were ready for seasons end but when someone pays that much to stay at their location they should at least be treated some what decent .Even at the restaurant you would have to deal with the same people and their attitude. we watched some folks walk who probably would have stayed had they been talked to better. would I recommend it? maybe earlier in the season, Will we stay there again? probably not we will probably stay at our old standby and we go up there probably 4-5 times a year . that's roughly 4800.to 6k money spent some where else but they will survive.

Booked this hotel based on TA but ended up quite disappointed.

For $200/night the room is super small - never we had bumped into each other in a hotel room. Also, room is non-smoking but they allow it right outside, so the smell from my neighbors invaded my room. Nasty… we’re not smokers and my daughter has asthma. My wife also found body hair on the bed and a dirty pillow.

They have an EV charger which would be really convenient if all the spots weren’t ICE’d.

The location is really easy to Mount Rushmore and the restaurant onsite has great food.

But all things considered this was way overpriced for what they deliver

We had the deluxe family cabin as we had our dog along. The cabin was clean and comfortable but absolutely miniscule! Total area smaller than a hotel room. Husband slept on the pull out sofa which was surprisingly comfy. It had a memory foam mattress unlike most pullouts. We enjoyed the porch swing but for the road noise. The clever loft sleeping area was clearly designed for children and the bedroom was adequate but crowded. My opinion is the sofa pullout was preferable. This place is so tiny I do not know how a “family” could actually stay here! We each brought in one small bag and the small cooler and the place was jammed.

The road noise which carried up the hill however was substantial. Since it is fall, cold at night and the windows were closed it did not bother us however, beware of this when booking for high season. There was an air conditioner in the main room, a small beverage fridge which was barely cool, a Keurig coffee maker that made not even a 1/2 cup of coffee and a tiny microwave. Good water pressure though and lots of towels.

Accommodations for people with dogs are limited so perhaps there are larger spaces to rent on the resort. Well known restaurant on the premises if you can get in.

My granddaughters and I stayed here during our summer 2020 road trip. I was looking for a pet friendly (7 pound Maltese) rental centrally located. These cabins are very tiny, not well lit, and ours smelled terribly musty. We had to spray it with Febreeze to be able to sleep. There was barely enough room for the 4 of us to move around and we are small people. We had ants in tiny "kitchen" area land when I told the desk attendant at check out he responded by saying they just had it sprayed - no apology, no thanks for letting us know, nothing. The bath towels were old, threadbare and very small. It wasn't horrible, but it was the most expensive and least appointed unit we rented during our entire vacation. It was not worth the extra $40 a night for the "family cabin" with two queens compared to the two queen cabin. The bed linens have seen better days. There is no internet at this property.
The positives include a nice pool for the kids and the beautiful evergreen trees and aspens right outside the door. Additionally the location was a central base for us; however, I would not stay here again, nor would I recommend this property.

This is by far the best kept secret in South Dakota, I rented a cabin for a week and always had what ever I needed, towels soap, coffee. Front desk personnel were always friendly and respectful and very knowledgeable about activities around their area. The restaurant was phenomenal, staff was on point with everything, food was delicious.

This is a great alternative to the big chain hotels/motels. We had a room with 2 queen beds; it was quite roomy. The beds/bedding are fine. The water pressure in the shower is good. The bath towels, however, are quite thin and small. Our room was quite clean, except there were a ton of small bugs in the overhead light in the bathroom.

The grounds are nice, with a small playground for kids, a pool, and a washer/dryer (takes quarters only). On the property is a restaurant; the food is great and it could not be more convenient!

The cabins appeared to be cute little cottages tucked in the woods, but they are really right on the highway. Noisy all night. Also advertises wi-fi but it is not accessible from the rooms or even the parking lot.

Response from phlodge, Manager at Powder House Lodge

MFS, Thanks for your review. We do have several different cabin options spread across our faciltiy. The unit you are speaking of is our economy rooms, which we call our Pioneer Rooms. These are smaller units and are offred at an affordable price, as they are located at the base of the hill. We do offer Wi-fi through out our facility, however, we did take a lightning strike here and it knocked out our service (it was continually dropping). We have since received our new Access Points, and the wi-fi is back up and running. Sadly, things of this nature are sometimes out of our control when it comes to nature.

As I recall, they did have a smaller sized TV in our room. But we did not use at all, so can't comment as to quality of picture.
