    Great Location
We really enjoyed our 3-night stay at the Powderhouse Lodge. Their website has a map of different accommodations in varying price points. We chose the Trailblazer 59 cabin tucked way back on top of the hill. It gave us a lot of privacy with only one other cabin next to us. It had everything we could possibly need; full size fridge, stovetop, dishes, utensils, etc. Nice deck to unwind after a day of sightseeing. It’s an “old school” cabin which we were looking for, albeit an electric fireplace. Small complaint would be the thread barren towels, but there were plenty of them. Although this cabin has 2 queen size beds, we would recommend it to couples or families with older children. If you want to be near the playground, pool or restaurant, it’s a bit of a walk up and down the hill. You can certainly drive, but parking seems to come at a premium. Keystone is a good location in the Black Hills. Technically, the lodge is about a half mile+ from the edge of town, so you may be disappointed if you think you can walk to town from the lodge. I want to say maybe 5-minutes to Mt. Rushmore and close to other attractions. We were undecided between staying in Hill City or Keystone. After visiting, I think either location is good. We wanted the cabin atmosphere, with a restaurant that has good reviews (food & service was very good), so Powderhouse Lodge fit the bill. Seems Keystone may be more kid friendly than Hill City due to kid attractions nearby, but works for adults as well. Everyone was extremely nice and polite. Would not hesitate to stay here again.

    Duplex 43 was good
We stayed in duplex 43(one king) for two nights. We were happy they didn't provide maid service due to covid and was easy to get things if needed. Was nice and quiet. We were close to the pool and I was afraid of it being noisy but it wasn't. Our cabin was small but worked for my husband and myself. Was kind of congested coming back at night because of the restaurant which sorry to say because of the covid we didn't try. Would like to sometime. They have a small area in the office with local candies and fudge and post cards and I believe sweatshirts etc.. We tried the fudge ...it was delicious. Very creamy! There was a picnic table outside the duplex but was always being used by the others in the adjoining room so cant comment except that it was there. Would be nice to have two for a duplex.

    Nice Stay
We used the Powder House Lodge as our jumping off point to explore the area for 4 nights. I liked that they did not come into our cabin for daily service due to Covid. If we needed anything we asked the front desk and it was either given to us right then or delivered and left outside our room. The room had all the amenities we needed for a pleasant stay. It was very hot so the air conditioner was nice to have and worked well. It is very close to town and Mount Rushmore. Having the best restaurant in town on the property was an added bonus.

We loved our stay at Powder House Lodge! We stayed in a duplex cabin near the pool. The cabin was just as described and very clean. The only minor issue was the air conditioner was quite loud which made it hard to watch TV without turning the volume up significantly; however, we never heard our neighbor's TV and they never complained to us so it must have been ok! There is parking right outside the cabin, a nice little table and chairs on the deck, and picnic tables in front of the cabin. The pool was nice and I saw it being maintained every morning. One suggestion would be to add some umbrellas to the pool area. We loved our stay and would return again!

We stayed here recently on a trip to see Mount Rushmore. The lodge itself is in a nice location and the accommodations are nice. The restaurant was terrible. The 1st night we down and put our name on the wait list. Once we were seated I told our server I had a gluten allergy. He said no problem they would take care of me. I ordered the chicken Alfredo with gluten free pasta. We were just finishing our salad course and our server came back to inform me they were out of gluten free pasta. Now this is a seasonal resort and had only been open a few weeks, how did they not know this when we ordered and why did it take till we were finished with the salad to be informed?! So I ordered the Powder House Chicken , which was just ok,way to much artichokes for my liking, they took up half the plate. The last night of our trip we thought we would give them another chance, we had traveled all day and were tied. This time we both ordered the Power House burger, I did not get the gluten-free bun, because some are good and some suck. My husband's was like a hockey puck, over cooked and mine was raw. I let Abby our server know and she gave me an attitude, like this was my fault! They did comp my meal which was a salad and a baked potato. When we left the manager asked how things were and I told him terrible! He pretty much brushed me off and said " OK thanks for letting us know" Way to treat your tourists clientele! I would NEVER go back ! My company is sending people to the area for Sturgis and I will tell them to avoid this place all together!

We thought this looked charming but it was far from it. Would not check you in without your license plate number unlike most hotels who know you've rented a car and only require the make/model/color. Parking for the cabins is difficult at best, requiring gyrations impossible for any kind of larger vehicle. Cabin was incredibly small and every available space on the wall has furniture on it making it difficult to move within the cabin. There was a rocking chair - very nice - up against the wall heater which not only blocked the heater but also made it impossible to rock. Closet in the back corner with no light making it difficult to see in it without using your phone flashlight. But the real problem is the really icky bathroom - not updated since at least the 1970's, you have to flush the toilet 3-4 times to get clear water in the bowl, don't even think about drinking the water out of the tap as it's not clear either and the towels are thin and not matching. Also, this hotel is right on the main highway and very noisy all hours. The restaurant does not take reservations or hold any table for hotel guests and is incredibly popular -not sure why. You have to call, they give you and approximate time to be there, then you arrive and they ask for your phone number so they can call you when you're table is ready. Food is mediocre but to be fair it's also not very expensive. The only good thing I can say about this whole experience is that the server in the restaurant was wonderful. But that alone is not worth staying or eating here. Really, a Motel 6 would have been better.

I follow Wahls Protocol, Level 2, and I was well-accommodated during my visit! The waitress knew the menu, and the chef followed through. The tips were tender & delicious & full of flavor! I highly recommended this establishment with or without special dietary needs.

This is by far the best kept secret in South Dakota, I rented a cabin for a week and always had what ever I needed, towels soap, coffee. Front desk personnel were always friendly and respectful and very knowledgeable about activities around their area. The restaurant was phenomenal, staff was on point with everything, food was delicious.

This was a nice surprise on our way to Rushmore. We had a stroller and the kind waitress helped us to get a table on the back patio so it could fit. When we walked out to the patio, I was so pleased with the ambience and was glad to be outside looking at the beautiful mountain. Food was great. Service was exceptional. The menu is pricey but I would definitely make it a point to dine here again if I'm ever in the area.

Booked this hotel based on TA but ended up quite disappointed. For $200/night the room is super small - never we had bumped into each other in a hotel room. Also, room is non-smoking but they allow it right outside, so the smell from my neighbors invaded my room. Nasty… we’re not smokers and my daughter has asthma. My wife also found body hair on the bed and a dirty pillow. They have an EV charger which would be really convenient if all the spots weren’t ICE’d. The location is really easy to Mount Rushmore and the restaurant onsite has great food. But all things considered this was way overpriced for what they deliver

We were disappointed in our stay at Powder House Lodge. We were in king duplex #43. The room did not have a couch and only had one desk chair. As stated by others, the towels were very thin. And, the soap, would not lather. Also, the pillows were very thin and you needed at least two to be comfortable. We could also hear the people in the cabin next to us. We were situated up the hill and parking was right next to our cabin. Location was great for Keystone. WiFi was also good. We ate dinner the first night at their restaurant. The food was good, but it was very chaotic. They had a wait list, however, since we were staying there, we were put at the top of the list. Breakfast was quiet and good. The owners were very friendly and gave us ice when we asked for it. My conclusion would be that it is an older lodge and the cabins do not have a lot of the amenities that you might expect in a newer facility.

I stayed here and it was amazing. The restaurant is excellent and the staff is very attentive. Breakfasts are great. The location is up the hill from the town of Keystone so there is Peace and Quiet. Cabin 25 is nice if you are doing a solo trip.

SO disappointing that I wonder if the other "reviews" are legitimate. This was NOT an outstanding property. Rundown cabins are situated going up a very steep hill...parking for our cabin was UP the hill behind the room--NOT great for loading & unloading luggage. Perhaps other cabins are better maintained & arranged for guest comfort but our King Duplex cabin definitely was NOT comfortable. It was very cramped & lacked ANY shelves or surfaces (other than the FLOOR!) to place our luggage & personal items. The carpet was thin and stained in several areas, some of it was damp! I found that out when my socks got wet walking across it. Disgusting. There was no lighting near the closet area, I had to use a flashlight to find things in my suitcase on the FLOOR! A VERY loud window unit barely cooled the room, at least there was a ceiling fan! The bathroom had serious old water damage in the ceiling above the shower. There were holes in the ceiling and wall with peeling wall material hanging off. Not a pleasant environment for a guest! The desk clerk tried to tell us that it was from a recent storm. Not so. This was obviously OLD damage left unrepaired for a very long time. The ancient shower head was horrible. It sprayed a weak flow that could not be adjusted to efficiently rinse shampoo from ones' hair. There was nothing to hang up a towel or clothing! Not a hook or towel bar and no room to place items around the sink...not even a soap dish for the soap bar, just let it melt on the counter! A tall, narrow cabinet housed a tiny, underpowered microwave, circa 2005, with a small Keurig placed on the shelf high ABOVE it. In order to pour water into the machine, it was necessary to STAND on a chair! Otherwise you could not see the top of the coffee maker. This property does NOT provide complimentary coffee in the office. They prefer that you dine in their restaurant ($11.00 "breakfast sandwich) instead. As to the restaurant... It was busy at dinner & we were seated in an odd overflow area (half indoors & half out) furnished with uncomfortable patio furniture that rocked on the uneven floor. Menu items are pricey and the food quality is inconsistent. My meal was good but my wife was served a salad with brown, rotting lettuce underneath fresh lettuce on top! She ordered Chicken Carbonara...$18.95 for a large blob of sticky pasta with flavorless (unseasoned) pieces of chicken & fatty bits of bacon. We've had better frozen dinners! I expect to pay more for meals & lodging in a tiny tourist town, but there is NO excuse for bad food, uncomfortable lodging and indifferent management. There are limited options for meals & lodging in Keystone & many close for the season after Labor Day. We definitely felt taken advantage of at Powder House. This is an old property that could be charming but it is NOT maintained, the exterior photos DO NOT resemble the actual property and there is NO consideration for guests comfort. We traveled over 1000 miles to visit Mt. Rushmore and planned well in advance for our trip. We were very glad to check out of this property and do not recommend it for a comfortable, relaxing stay.
