    Lovely Inn
We just stayed at The Shire for a couple of nights after moving from an airbnb that we weren't thrilled with. The Shire was perfect - clean, quiet, simple but had nice linens, a comfy bed and coffee in our building lobby. We stayed in a premium room with a gas fireplace and a porch with 2 rocking chairs facing the river. There are really no amenities here (no restaurant or bar or spa) but it is right in town so you can walk everywhere. We would definitely stay here again if in town!
Thank you for taking the time to write a review for our hotel and we are delighted to hear that you enjoyed staying with us.

Great location right by town, less than 1 minute to Downtown via car! Cute, quaint and simple for what you need!
Great location to town and a supermarket across the street! We stayed in the “newer” part of the hotel and thought the rooms were a good size. Easy check in and out process all done via text, don’t need to waste anytime with the front desk which was great! Just heads up, they don’t offer “daily refreshing” for the room but can text the main office to bring over fresh towels, more toilet paper, etc. which was easy to do. The room also has heavy shades on the windows which we always prefer to keep the early sun out of the room while traveling with children is helpful. Supermarket right across the street which also sold beer and wine ;)
Thank you for choosing our hotel, and for taking the time to write a review! We are so glad to hear that you and your family enjoyed your accommodations, and that our messaging system worked seamlessly for you! Our hotel aims to provide a truly unique experience, and we are thrilled that we were able to exceed your expectations. We enjoy Mac Market as well!! We look forward to welcoming you back to our hotel in the future. Sincerely, Lauren Gudovitz | General Manager

    Great first visit to Woodstock!
Me and my family had a wonderful stay this past weekend at the Shire. and we are already planning our next trip back! The town of Woodstock feels like it is straight out of a book; cute shops, amazing local restaurant, and beautiful views everywhere! The Shire did not disappoint. The Family Room was able to fit my entire family of 6 comfortably. Behind the hotel, there is a lawn and a river in which we were able to relax out by and play yard games. The hotel team was very friendly and while the lobby does close at night, they are very responsive by text message (I received a text message at check in informing me that housekeeping was only available by request, which we declined but were able to get fresh towels!). Looking forward to returning next summer!
Thank you for taking the time to write a review and share you experience with future guests. We are pleased that you and your family enjoyed your room and the fun outdoor games near the river. We look forward to welcoming you back next summer.

This hotel provides an incredibly schizophrenic experience. The upside is that the rooms have some nice features, nice wood floors, nice shades, comfortable bed. BUT, be forewarned, the downsides FAR outweigh the positives!!!!!! The hotel provides NO room cleaning services. It's not that you need to ask for cleaning; room cleaning is simply NOT available! One night i paid $538 and there was with NO room cleaning services available. Period! The rooms have no room phone. There's an embarrassing sign that says "In the case of an emergency, Dial 911." On what?!? The bath areas have no wall shelves to put anything down on. Construction and its attendant mess is an ongoing problem. You'd think they'd reduce the price of the rooms if you have to deal regularly with mess and noice. But no! The hotel brags about being next to the river, but they're still building the path down to the river. Room lights are punishingly bright; they either need dimmers or room lights that aren't overwhelmingly bright. Tissues and toilet paper are the cheapest stuff on the market. (I've had sandpaper that was almost as soft.) Rooms have no closet. There are a limited number of wall hooks badly placed by a standing lamp, making the very short hooks almost unusable. That's the short list! If you're masochistic enough to want to waste your money to stay there, you can make your own list of inconveniences.

Really nice surprise, room was large well appointed. Nice staff, walking distance from lots of great things to see. We loved the view of the river, a nice patio were we got sit and have a nice glass of wine. Short walk to dinner at the Woodstock Inn. Even shorter walk to great breakfast place Mont Vert. Highly recommend all of the above.

The staff was rude at check in and no where to be found at check out. Major construction started before 8a (the shower was shaking and the lift beeping was unbearable). Our room should not have been rented given its proximity but nothing was said or done. Room lacked basic supplies (ex transhcans) and bathroom was in state of disrepair. We could not access our deck due to caution tape. I would not recommend this hotel.

SO so for the price, some simple upgrades could elevate. Such as making sure rooms smell nice, fixing the water pressure and making sure stays hot longer. Make sure fire pits are stocked and ready for use,

The staff is extremely helpful and welcoming. The Inn itself is located right in town with beautiful curb appeal (right out of a magazine) and right on the river which is nice to listen to at night with your window open. Although my standard/king bedroom was very clean, it was outdated, but if that doesn't bother you - this is the perfect place to stay.

I can't recommend the Shire more for having a perfect Vermont experience. The rooms were immaculate, the views out back were incredible and we were even welcomed with a package of popcorn, chocolates and water. The visitor guide was stellar and we ended up visiting a couple of the restaurants including the Skunk Hollow Tavern and Au Comptoir. Amazing! They are doing a ton of improvements to the property that aren't included on the website. Highly recommend!

Checked in to what seemed like a poorly finished DYI basement room, musty smell, carpet was ragged and torn, felt damp. Could hear every footstep from above. Bed was soft, laying down is when I noticed all the flying insects, and the spiders and webs across the ceiling and corners. Natural fly paper I told my wife. Plus they hold $100 incidental on your credit card for 10 days after you check out. Probably hostage for a positive review. Worker was using a leaf blower to clean up dust and dirt, disregarding clean cars with open windows. Have stayed here yearly for years, this will most likely be our LAST, something changed from years prior.

We loved our stay at The Shire! My husband, one-year old daughter and I went up to Woodstock for a 4-day trip. The hotel is located right along the Ottauquechee River. We stayed in a room with a balcony that looked out on the river. The room was spacious and we could easily fit a pack and play for our kid. The hotel staff was lovely. The hotel is well located and just a 5 minute walk to some great bars and restaurants in the town of Woodstock. We especially liked Mon Vert Cafe. Our daughter loved going to Billings Farm to see the cows and goats. We also took a hike in Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller Park. We plan to return in the winter time. The room had a gas fireplace that we would love to use and the hotel is a short drive from several ski mountains. We will definitely come back!
