The family suites overlooking the sea and pools ate definitely worth the tiny upgrade fee. Staff are incredibly helpful. Sure there’s a few little niggles but that’s understandable in these times. Pools great and the drinks selection at the cheeky monkey bar is great. All in all a pretty good place to finish our holiday at.

A previous review of the AX Seashells Hotel, from a person in Halifax, UK has this hotel pretty much spot on. I suppose mitigating circumstances may dictate to some degree too. Whilst still in the midst of the Covid pandemic, some of the issues might be understandable and explainable, others less so. Facilities and what is on offer is restricted, particularly for all inclusive customers. This is the polar opposite of what your experience is at all inclusive resorts in Mexico or the Caribbean. It can be a little embarrassing to be repeatedly told this isn’t on your menu or that drink isn’t included. The choice of restaurants is very limited and it does appear priority in terms of seating is given to walk-ups. However a decent tip if you are staying here is to book your reservations on arrival. This does give you a degree of certainty around eating of an evening, even if this can feel quite restrictive as well. I’d probably avoid the Cheeky Monkey restaurant all together if you are all inclusive. The choice is very limited and to be frank the food is not very nice. The Luzzu Restaurant is the best. Again, choice is limited for all inclusive guests but the food is generally really nice (avoid the rabbit ravioli) and portion sizes are massive! Another massive plus worth reiterating is the staff at Luzzu. They are really pleasant, helpful and hardworking. Luzzu and the Staff there, are the biggest asset to the hotel. The rooms at the hotel are nice and changed every day without fail. It’s a great location with bus services to all parts of the island. BugIbba Square is a short walk away and we’ll worth a visit for other restaurants and bars. Yes the hotel could do with a lick of paint and modernising. However, during these times, it is difficult for many businesses and it should also be remembered that many large hotels will be shy of atmosphere and facilities because they cannot be filled to capacity due to Covid restrictions.

Dear W4865PUmatts, We would like to thank you for the input and indeed a lot depends on restrictions which change continuously and may not be familiar to people coming from outside the island. One will be surprised at things which hotels had to change, use of one material not the other, removal of cushions from the lobby area, collateral in rooms and many other things. Priority is not given to non all inclusive guests - priority is given to guests with a reservation. Before Covid, both Luzzu Restaurant and Cheeky Monkey were not included on the all inclusive choice of restaurants. The pandemic brought various challenges - the bigger one being social distancing. We therefore had to open both for all inclusive guests - we would not have been having this discussion in 2019. Of course each country has its particular aspects and i am sure that both Mexico and The Caribbean have an undisputed charm - which starts with their price, followed by the most obvious - space loads of it - and resorts with numerous outlets. We are glad you liked the menu at Luzzu and of course the staff - they are indeed a very hard working and resilient bunch. Such a shame to have write about such an empty soulless hotel. The advertised food and drink facilities are so misleading. The Coral Bay Buffet and Ambasdador Lounge are NOT open, leaving only the school canteen style ItTok buffet for breakfast. It took 5 days for the chef to prepare a single gluten free roll. The bookable slots at Cheeky Monkey and Luzzu are near impossible to book at the unfriendly reception unless you want to eat at 5.30, although if you go along to the restaurant you will see people getting tables by just walking in at any time as long as they were paying cash. The all inclusive menu is greatly reduced compared to pay on the day guests. Cheeky Monkey offer just 3 starter options- salad, bruchette or garlic bread. We are treat like second class citizens as soon as the all inclusive wristband is spotted. The one bar open on an evening in the hotel is like God's waiting room with a casio keyboard player everynight whilst you sip your drinks from plastic glasses. Walk out of the hotel and you will find the other hotels packed full, mainly of Seashells guests who have decided to pay elsewhere for the evening. The locals down at the rocky seafront use the hotel free of charge all day, washing themselves and their cooking equipment in the bathrooms, taking a dip in the pool, snoozing on the sunloungers and taking the hotel chairs down to the sea to eat with their families. Noone monitors this. There are no lifeguards around the pools. Positives, yes there are some. It does have a lovely harbour view, the majority of staff do work very hard. The burgers at lunch are great. The deserted main hotel could be lovely with its marble interior, couchs and pianos, but there is noone here. Walking through at night is like a scene from the shining. Such a let down for what you would expect from a 4 star all inclusive. We have had to spend so much money on water for the mornings and evenings when the bars charge, meals out of the hotel when unable to get tables at the bookable restaurants and by going out of the hotel to the other buzzing hotels just for some drinks in a real glass and a holiday atmosphere. What a shame that this is our first, and last, experience of Malta.

Dear MRSPANNIE, We take this opportunity to thank you for the review and feedback and regret we may not have fulfilled your expectations. Your feedback to us is very important, as it is only through our guests’ guidance that we can formulate the best experience possible for our guests. I would like however to take this opportunity and point out a couple of things which you mentioned. The style of the restaurant - It-tokk where both breakfast and dinner are served is local and slightly rustic - the menus served are not short of any items which we served pre-covid the only difference is that buffets have to be served - self service is not existent any more. Ambassador Lounge is momentarily closed because it does not comply to covid space restrictions - instead there are two large pool bars open and guests may also choose to go to Cheeky Monkey - the latter was not part of the all inclusive package in pre- covid days. At the pool bars, drinks cannot be served in glass, because this is a hazard in spaces where guests may actually be walking barefoot - this is a local restriction valid for a number of years. Beverages are served in glass in all of our outlets including Cheeky Monkey and Luzzu as well as It-Tokk. Especially because of covid we encourage table reservations - this applies to all our outlets, to hotel guests and non hotel guests. The hotel does not give priority to walk ins at all, priority is given to pre-bookings - anything else depends on availability at the point in time. If an outlet is full at a particular time, there is nothing one can do, especially during such times, when the authorities are checking that restrictions are observed. You will be aware that gluten free items cannot be mingled with other items as they will be contaminated - guests have to inform us of their requirements in this case as none will be just left on display. We would have gladly provided more in this area if you just left a restaurant supervisor know of your requirement. The hotel makes it very clear in all its advertising that the rocky beach in front of the hotel is not private - however hotel guests local or not may still use the area as public of course - some actually also at times take a chair or deck chair from the pool area down there - we do indeed check that people not wearing our band are not using our equipment. All hotel guests whatever their board basis, wear a band which identifies them as such. the hotel has no jurisdiction on who goes there. Whilst there is indeed no actual lifeguards, all staff working at the pool are trained life savers and the hotel always has first aiders on its rosters. There are also life saving rings at both pools - this is the only actual requirement which we of course abide to. We are glad you mention that at least some of our staff do work hard, under all present circumstances and different levels of appreciation. We do hope that the island experience met your expectations and hope you will consider returning to one of our 7 AX Hotels. Stayed here for a week middle of July with my partner, Covid regulated hotel and check in smooth Room had partial sea view but also a grey rooftop Room white and soul less no atmosphere Pool area was clean and nice but be aware non residents are allowed in at a daily rate so can get busy Hotel needs major updating to bring up to a four star hotel and large areas are redundant in the hotel and tired (sofas etc ) not worth price paid .
