I have just returned from a 2 week all-inclusive stay at the Hotel Santana in a standard room on the second floor, although rated as a 4* I would put it as a high 3* as was lacking in some areas to make it a 4* in my opinion, I have stayed in different accommodation all over the world from 1* to 5* I appreciate that it ticks most of the boxes for amenities, but the service and cleaning issues were annoying and leave a lot to be desired. 1) Rooms a) Pros: - i) Spacious and of a good size, with a large bathroom complete with all toiletries replenished daily, and the option of clean linen daily if required, or you could use more than once being the more environmentally friendly option. ii) Large mirrors in both areas with separate shaving mirror and point in the bathroom. iii) Air-conditioning worked. iv) Tea and Coffee available and replenished daily. v) Nice balcony with chairs and a table, but do not expect a view as you will not get one as this is an inland Hotel which is to be expected. vi) All crockery requirements were provided (Coffee / Teacups, Glasses) b) Cons: - i) Room cleaning varied dependent on which member of staff was cleaning. ii) On at least one occasion dirty glasses were left and a coffee cup was replaced with one that was ingrained with drink residue that we needed to wash before use. iii) My wife dropped a glass in the bathroom which shattered, we cleaned this as best we could, but some was not easy to get up without a brush, this was still on the floor when we left 7 days later. iv) Bedding was not always replaced when needed, I appreciate water is a premium on these islands, so would not expect every day, but when bedding has become marked should be replaced and not just covered up, in the hope it will not be noticed. v) Wi-Fi in room area very poor, and several times had no internet, I appreciate that to some people this is not an issue but being able to use skype might be nice or even watch a program as the TV only had 2 English channels. 2) Restaurant a) Pros: - i) The restaurant was spacious, and seating was well spaced out so that you did not feel crowded. ii) The selection of food is good considering the pandemic and price paid, (1) Breakfast consisted of a selection of cereals bread or toast, yoghurt, various pastries, fruit, a selection of cold cuts as well as all the requirements for the traditional English breakfast (Eggs (Boiled, Scrambled or Fried) Grilled fresh tomatoes, Baked Beans, Sausages, and Bacon). (2) Lunch I cannot comment a great deal here as we only ate in the Hotel 4 times, and had a pack lunch the rest of the time as we were out all day (4 Ham and Cheese sandwiches, packet of Cheese and Onion crisps an apple, a muffin and a bottle of Water per person). (3) Dinner there were three courses catered for (4) Appetizers (a) A selection of salads and antipasto, homemade soup and pastas which could be used as an appetizer or part of a main. (5) Mains (a) A selection of at least three different meat / fish items were available (Chicken, Beef, Tuna, Amberjack, Turkey, Duck, Veal etc.), some days curry / chilli and rice dishes were provided also, Different styles of potatoes were provided daily, and butter glazed vegetables. (6) Desserts and Cheeses (a) Assorted Gateaux’s, Flans, and Ice Creams. A small selection of cheese and crackers were available, (7) The staff in the restaurant were lovely, polite, and helpful especially Anton, Sylvia, and Karen. b) Cons: - (1) Although as stated above the quality of the food was of a good standard, the served temperature was not, at best the food was Tepid to just Cold this from a catering point of view this should not happen with hot food being maintained at at least 63°c. (2) The only issue with the staff was they could be a little overzealous with clearing as you only had to put your knife and fork down and they would try to clear away whilst other members of your party were still eating. I observed a poor woman have her plate cleared whilst having a break from eating and had to stop them. 3) Pool Bar a) Pros i) The pool bar included ice cream. nice baguettes and wraps on the all-inclusive tariff. 4) Pool Area a) Pros i) Pleasant views from the roof b) Cons i) Area totally uninspiring, with a very small pool. ii) Tended to get overcrowded. iii) No real shade, ideal if all you want to do is bake on a hotel roof 5) The Zazen Garden a) Pros i) This is a beautiful area to sit and relax in day or night. ii) Comfortable seating with a totally Zen type feeling to the area. b) Cons i) Getting a drink in this area leaves a lot to be desired where it can take up to 20 mins for a waiter to take your order, then a further 20 minutes to receive them, if they arrive correct, without items missing, this could easily be alleviated by opening the bar situated in the garden itself and 1 waiter to service the tables. I do feel the closed because of covid excuse is used all too often as this was an open-air bar so would have not been an issue 6) Bar and Entertainment a) Pros i) Convenient ii) Reasonable selection of cocktails available in the bar on the all-inclusive list with the option to purchase others if desired. b) Cons i) Again, same issue as Zazen, uninterested staff, I am not sure if this is seasoned staff that do not care or whether they are new untrained staff as it was often felt that they did not know what to do, this may be the same case as in England that people left the hospitality industry and did not want to return. ii) Only 1 beer available for All-inclusive (Carlsberg) would have thought the islands local beer would have been available and no real indication on bar list what was available to all-inclusive, you had to remember from the list given on arrival. iii) Entertainment mediocre, ok if all you are in your 70’s and all you want to do is have a singalong to a guy on a keyboard churning out all the old singalong favourites, different people playing but just variations on the same thing. 7) The Cleopatra Spa a) Cons: - i) Booking desk not always attended. Probably due to treatments being performed. b) Pros: - i) Easy to book, plenty of time slots available. ii) The Spa facility provided by Cleopatra Beauty is excellent, I would highly recommend. iii) I had two anti-stress massages during my stay from a lovely lady named Leila, both were to a very high standard leaving me totally relaxed and calm, performed in a nice peaceful environment. iv) Two treatment rooms available, I believe one for Massage etc and the other for various other treatments. v) The inside pool is pleasant and peaceful, I cannot comment on the other facilities as I did not use them. 8) Fitness Suite a) A Bike, Elliptical Trainer and Treadmill, I will leave you to draw your own conclusions 9) Overall Conclusion The hotel is ideally situated for exploring the area with most attractions being within walking distance and is a pickup point for tours right outside the door. The general cleanliness of the hotel public areas seemed to be to a good standard, with cleaning products being used to clean the area, and a good amount of hand sanitisation stations available. Would I stay here again, definitely not on an all-inclusive basis, possibly on a bed and breakfast at a push and just suffer the lukewarm food, we ate out on some occasions for lunch and the food was excellent, due to poor service and entertainment in the bar areas we went out every night.

Just got back from a 2 week fully inclusive break to the Santana staying in a double standard room. I have stayed in a lot of hotels from 2 star up to 5 stars, and I am not sure this one is actually a 4 star! Maybe a good 3? Location was good for convenience, no actual views though unless you stand on a chair with binoculars or go on the rooftop area. The pool area was uninspiring with a small rectangular pool and it got very overcrowded and although we like the odd pool day, we actually paid to go to a local lido instead as it was a far more pleasant area. The indoor pool looked lovely but never used it. There are 3 bars in the hotel, but one of them was closed in the Zazen Garden area, which is a shame as it was a lovely part of the hotel but not utilised to its full potential. Getting a drink out there was painfully slow. The cocktails didnot really look like cocktails and got served in plastic glasses outside. The entertainment was sporadic and quite poor, unless you like some guy on a keyboard belting out Elton John covers. Because of the speed of service and poor entertainment we ended up going out of the hotel every night which added to the costs when we had actually paid all inclusive. The food in the restaurant was nice, good selection but unfortunately usually cold, or just about warm. There were some great staff in there, Anton, Karen, Sylvia to name but 3, but the staff were a bit too great sometimes, as your plate etc was whipped from under you as soon as you took your last forkful. If you like going out on day trips I would not bother with fully inclusive as we only had lunch about 4 times. The pool bar is handy if you want a wrap or sandwich, but no hot food. The cleaning of the room was hit and miss, we had 2 different staff and one of them was great, but the other one left stained cups in the room, and dirty glasses. The Floor cleaning was mediocre as I dropped a glass and we got most of it up, but without brush etc hard to do, so we monitored the shards that were left behind under the sink and they were still there when we left over a week later. Also, sheets were left on when they had stains or marks on them. No laundry service unless you pay loads and it takes 3 days as its sent away. It might sound a bit petty, because overall we had a good holiday, but if you are expecting a 4 star hotel with the appropriate level of service, you may be disappointed, we saw other 4 star hotels in the area that seemed superior for facilities, decor etc.

We visited Santana as a couple for five nights in September on an all inclusive basis. I’d say that the hotel exceeded our expectations. Pros - The all inclusive package was very reasonably priced for what was included. The drinks included; beer (Carlsberg - very drinkable), wine (not top shelf of course but pleasant enough), spirits (again not top shelf but I liked the gin and my partner liked the whiskey), soft drinks, hot drinks, juices, water (bottled!), five classic cocktails (Cuba Libre, Sex on the Beach, Tequila Sunrise and I can’t remember the other two). The measurements of the spirits were also very generous. - The food was really good. We were genuinely spoilt for choice at every dinner. Breakfast included; streaky bacon, chipolata type sausages, eggs (fried, boiled and sometimes scrambled), beans, bread/toast, cereals, yogurts, fruit, pastries. For dinner and lunch there were always at least three different meat/fish options with accompanying potatoes and vegetables. The meat was varied too - duck, Turkey, beef steak etc and all cooked very well. Not many options for vegetarians I guess. It isn’t a burger/chicken nuggets/chips sort of restaurant which we found refreshing. However the restaurant does have signs offering “kids food” available on request. There was also always a homemade soup, pasta choices, cheese and crackers, assorted desserts. The pool bar also included ice cream and nice baguettes for lunch with the all inclusive! - Reception staff were very welcoming, friendly and genuinely happy to help. - The room we had was nice enough. I believe from reading other reviews that we were lucky to have been given a newer renovated room with the blue and white decor. It wasn’t huge but spacious enough for the two of us, nice shower and balcony. Air con was good and worked well. Cleaned and tidied each day by room service. - Location of the hotel. We travelled to Gozo/Comino Islands via a boat from Buggiba bay (10 min walk away from the hotel) and we travelled to Valletta and Mdina on the bus (bus station is a 3-4 min walk from the hotel). The bus system is good, cheap and quick. Very happy with location of the hotel as everywhere was easy to access. Cons - The waiting staff (or lack of) in the hotel bar and garden area. I’m not sure if the existing staff were slacking or if there just weren’t enough of them but ordering drinks in both the hotel bar at the front and the back garden area was a bit of a nightmare. The problem was consistent daytime and nighttime too - and when we were the only people in the bar or when every table was filled. - The rooftop pool area is lovely but there are bizarrely only two (ridiculously large) parasols up there. Most hotels have individual parasols for sun beds that people can use as and when they need them but instead of this the hotel have two parasols fixed into the concrete that can’t be moved and only cover a very small area. Maybe this isn’t an issue for most but for someone who burns very easily, I really struggled. People would squeeze their sun beds underneath the only two parasols available by the afternoon because they wanted a break from the sun - so you’d have strangers squished very close because they were desperately seeking some shade. Simple solution is to stick a few portable parasols up there as an option. The pros massively outweigh the cons so I would return to the hotel in the future.

Good hotel. Well located. Staff were friendly. Cleaning of the rooms really good standard. I had a comfort room and it was spacious. Only down side is the delays in getting served- the garden bar area ought to be utilised and the non endorsement of towels not to be left on sun beds before 9am.
