Umi hotel is located by one of the most beautiful mountain ranges in the country; the hotel is only about 150 km away from Reykjavik and 2 km off the Ring road (Road NR. 1). Our location offers a strong connection to nature that allows our guests to experience the peace and quiet of the Icelandic countryside. The hotel offers a first class restaurant with a unique view of the Westman Islands and the southern coastline, as well as a lounge bar with a view of the famous sub-glacial volcano Eyjafjallajokull and the beautiful mountain terrain surrounding it. Next to our hotel the river Svadbaelisa peacefully flows by. The starlit skies and northern lights certainly won’t let anyone down over the winter months. The hotel is non-smoking and open all year round.

Nestled in Iceland's scenic south coast, Umi Hotel has earned accolades from guests for its superb location, surrounded by beaches and waterfalls. The amenities, including comfortable rooms and excellent dining options, receive high marks for enhancing the stay. The hotel's service stands out, with many praising the staff's friendliness and professionalism. While the atmosphere is generally admired for its thoughtful design, it has received some criticism for lacking warmth. Cleanliness and the modern charm of the rooms are repeatedly commended, and although prices are on the higher side, most travelers find the overall experience to be of great value.

We stayed one night at Umi and found it to be the nicest hotel during our week stay around the island.

The hotel is new - the decor is minimalist but very tastefully done with clean lines and appealing linens and furnishings. We had both a standard and a superior room. Both were very nice with comfortable beds and lovely views of the mountains.

The bathroom had all new, modern fixtures. Great rain shower, upgraded toiletries, large bath towels and bath robes. There were many nice touches like a hair dryer and flat iron, coffee maker and wine glasses in the room.

Breakfast was served in the dining room as a buffet. Many options and excellent choices to find a filling breakfast.

All staff was helpful and everyone on site was wearing masks.

Only regret was that we weren't there longer.

We got personalized attention from staff, gave us local knowledge and also accommodated special meal requests. The hotel itself is minimalist and matches the environment. If you want a calm, serene retreat, Umi is the place to be.
The only feature I missed during my stay was a hot tub, that would have been a welcome addition.

Based on previous reviews of Umi, I had pretty high expectations going into my stay. In every way, Umi exceeded those expectations. Driving into the hotel, I was struck by the surroundings. In front of the hotel were beautiful mountains that provided a view of one of Iceland’s largest glaciers. Behind the hotel was the seaside, which you allowed you to explore some of Iceland’s black beaches. The interior of the hotel had a beautiful minimalist design that included floor-to-ceiling windows that gave a clear view of the landscapes. I loved sitting at breakfast and looking at the the beautiful Icelandic countryside. It’s clear that the hotel also put a lot of thought into its restaurant. We had dinner in the hotel both nights we stayed there. While the food was a bit pricey, it was absolutely delicious. If you’re heading to the southern coast of Iceland, this hotel will truly make your stay complete.

Beautiful design, remote, views, convenient to access all the big waterfalls/hikes in the area. Wanted to love this hotel but as the most expensive hotel we stayed at during our 3 week trip it disappointed. Absolutely lovely owner and staff - friendly and kind. Room is average/small sized compared to other 17 hotels we stayed in during 23 night Iceland visit. Unfortunately we got a room with non draining shower - as there are not 4 walls in Iceland showers and often just a drain for the whole bathroom this got messy and a little frustrating. Hot bfast buffet with self serve espresso machine that was not working that morning. :( Had to get used to Iceland bathroom amenities or rather lack thereof: all hotels offer squeeze bottle liquid hand/shampoo at sinks and showers. If you prefer bar soap, traditional shampoo, hair conditioner, kleenex, hand/body lotion, shower caps - please bring your own. We were to return later in the trip but cancelled the booking to switch to a favorite hotel instead (Hotel Geysir). Umi was fine for one night but I would explore other options...........

Dear Steph, Thank you for your review. We are glad that you were happy with your overall experience. We are sorry if there was some problem with the shower drainage. We try to fix everything as soon it's reported to us. Unfortunately the self serve espresso machine broke down that day but we put up a Nespresso coffee machine instead while we were waiting for that to be fixed. We pride ourselves of thinking about the environment with not using single use bathroom amenities products and in stead use Icelandic products from Sóley in all our bathrooms that are high quality and environmentally friendly.

Perfect location, a short walk to a beautiful volcanic beach, short drive to a beautiful waterfall, loved every minute of our stay, the evening menu was outstanding, obviously being Iceland it was a lot more expensive than we would normally pay, but both meals were of excellent quality. Breakfast was buffet style, there was plenty of everything and water for tea was always boiling hot. Only downside is the tables are very close together which is a personal dislike of mine as I don't like to feel like I am eating with people I do not know and being so close it felt like I was joining the next table, that was my only issue. Rooms were spotless and perfectly adequate for our 2 night stay, in fact we wish we had stayed 3 nights here and just 1 in Reykjavik, The staff were so friendly and helpful with recommending places to visit nearby, we always received a good morning or hello every time we passed a member of staff. Would stay here again if I ever returned to Iceland.

Excuse me for butchering his name but Jacob at the front desk went above and beyond to make sure we had a great two night stays last week. He was ever so courteous with our requests when we ourselves couldn't believe they obliged, including the following: late night check-in and dinner, microwaving our instant rice we had to ask for since our tour ended late in the afternoon but before dinner was an option, making sure our dusty hiking gear is laundered in half day and arranging for me to retrieve my cell phone I left at the tour van. I'm used to staying at true 5-star places like the Four Seasons, Aman and Auberge hotel chains. Umi's hardware may not live up to those hotels but the warm and sincere hospitality certainly did.

Stayed here using points so can’t speak for cost. Hotel was great. Room was comfortable and simple. Window opened for fresh air.

Robes in hotel room and slippers.

Saw the Northern Lights from the parking lot! Checked the Aurora App, Lights seemed plausible, went outside and there they were!
Hotel also offers wake-up service in the event the Lights are visible.

Dinner (not included in room rate) was delicious. We had one cod dinner and one trout dinner plus the chocolate lava cake for dessert.

Our room was on the “ocean side”, so we had a great view of the sunrise on the winter solstice.

Everyone we encountered was wonderful to deal with. Breakfast buffet was the usual Euro breakfast buffet offerings (eggs, meats, pickled herring, Skye, berries, fruit, toast, cereal, etc).

The hotel road entrance is directly across the highway from the turnoff to the Seljavallalaug Swimming Pool and about 25 mins west of the Reynsifjara beach turnoff off the highway.

When you turn off the main road and down the dirt road to approach this isolated hotel, you could be excused for thinking “what is this place?” It is, however, a first rate hotel with a really good restaurant.
The rooms aren’t huge but they’re comfortable, clean and well equipped. The bathrooms are on the small side but the shower is excellent once you wait a few minutes for the hot water to arrive.
Although the price of food and wine is high, like anywhere decent in Iceland I believe, dinner was a memorable experience. Service was attentive and the quality of dishes outstanding. Whilst the menu choices were a little limited, quantities were ample and everything was presented nicely. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal.
The breakfast buffet, included in the room price, was also very good. The only minor criticism I would have, and this is common to most hotel buffet breakfasts, is the hot dishes were only luke warm.

The hotel is very well located! It's perfect for visiting the south of Iceland.
The breakfast included is delicious!
The rooms are standard, quiet, a little bit small and simple for the price.
We appreciated our stay in Umi hotel but for the price we would have appreciated additional elements like free coffee all the day, special prices for the restaurant (it was very delicious but expensive when you stay 5 nights) and a spa or hot water bath.
In general we appreciated our stay in Umi but we found it a little bit expensive for the services offered.

This hotel looked the part but fell short. We checked in very late after a long day of hiking and I just wanted to go to bed. The desk clerk was very nice and she checked us in quickly. When we got to the room everything looked nice on the surface but the room was very hot/humid. We opened the window but it only opens an inch. I then got ready for bed and realized the bed was damp/wet and dirty. My husband went to the front desk and the attendant helped us as quickly as she could but seemed to be the only staff working so it wasn’t immediate. Around this time my husband had gotten me some surprise little desserts from the restaurant to have before bed, but while we were waiting for the bed to be changed, it all melted. They were kind enough to replace the dessert. But the dessert was less than good — the rice pudding ball was inedible and the chocolate cake was like a gas station brownie — but both looked nice. Not what you’d expect for almost usd $50. Also, shower didn’t drain on one side. The worst was the damp bedding and the super hot/humid room — I had the worst sleep of my whole trip. Luckily everyone was nice and we only had one night there. Other hotels we stayed at during the trip were much better - highly recommend Alda in Reykjavik and Silica Hotel at Blue Lagoon. If you want a very good, but not fancy meal in nearby Vik, we highly recommend Smiðjan Brugghús — they only have burgers and pulled pork but it was really good (and that’s after eating a two delicious Michelin star restaurants during our stay) in close —- At first glance, everything looks good at Uma, but unfortunately they fail to deliver the goods beyond appearances. But, the employees were very nice.
