My group and I spent a good night at HI Hostel, in Borgarnes: the rooms were clean and large enough and we had a great time together in the little area close to the kitchen provided with coaches and sofas (here seats and carpet were not this clean, to be honest). The following morning we joined the hostel’s breakfast, which was good but neither abundant, nor too varied. Bathrooms were also improvable, especially for their number: the ones located in the first floor were not sufficient for the capacity of the whole plan. The overall experience has been good and I feel like suggesting this place to other tourists.
There was something a little different than other hostels. There was no one at the desk when I arrived and found an envelope instead. Because there were no planned activity options, the guests did not interact much. However, the hostel was clean and worked great for what I needed. I would stay here again.
This hostel has a lot of great points but is also lacking in some areas. The girl who worked the counter for checking in was very nice and friendly. But do not expect the lively atmosphere of most hostels. This hostel does not organize any activities, or dinner crawls or other gatherings for guest. There was no interaction among the guest. It has a very hotel atmosphere. It seems since hotel prices are so high in Iceland many people who never stay in hostels use them here. The room was clean as well as the bathrooms. They seem to have a good ratio so that I never had to wait when wanting to shower. The kitchen is very modern and kept very clean. The common room is not very conducive for gatherings to meet other travelers but they do provide a very large tv to watch at the end of a long day. Towels were free but they do not have private lockers anyway to place you valuables. It is safe is Iceland but all rooms should have a locker for each guest to lock wallets and passports in and such. …
Free coffe and tea ??? what, well thank you very much. Me and my GF stayed in this hostel for whole week cruising around Iceland and had very good starting point for lots of daily tours. Staff was nice expecialy Nina who took time and expained how to survive Iceland... =) Rooms and showers were clean. The only thing I would like to point out is pressure in the showers, but everything else is perefect and excellent. Thank you for your hospitality =)
Iceland has a very weak spot when it comes to accommodation both in price and in the condition that most of the places that they rent, are in. This Hostel in Borgarnes was the exception! Very clean (not at all something common in Iceland) and very organized. The kitchen facilities are very well organozed and so was the check-in/check-out process. All in all, I would definitely recommend them to anyone who would want to spend the night (or even multiple nights) in the area.
