Hospitality was on full display during my recent two night stay at Camai! Peony room was comfortable in every way, breakfast was delicious; and I was even invited to join my hosts Caroline and Craig berry picking in the backyard. Interaction with other guests was easy thanks to Caroline's engagement with us at the breakfast table. Residential location was convenient and quiet, and I hope for a future stay there.

Caroline and Craig were wonderful hosts and their B&B is a great location for traveling to the many hikes and attractions in the area. Breakfasts were tasty, hearty, and beautifully presented. Hosts offered many options for where to eat and how to spend our time.

"Warm and Welcoming"

Spotless and sparkling in a quiet neighborhood. Three uniquely decorated rooms with large modern bathrooms. Gracious hosts who look after every need. Hearty homemade breakfasts including fruit and baked goods. My wife and I give it the highest recommendation of any B&B we have ever stayed in.

This B & B is located in a residential area. Although the place was indeed clean, there was a distict odor to the place. Not sure what it was. We arrived about 4 p.m. It took the "Craig" quite a while to answer the door and then he asked who we were and what we wanted. When we said we had a reservation, he told us we were late so he was taking a nap. He invited us in and procedeed to tell us the house rules. No shoes, no loud music, no tv after 11, don't touch the remote other than to change the channel, etc. When Caroline stopped in she apologized for not making up the day bed for my daughter. She said she forgot we were coming that day and she had a "class". When we asked about using the hot tub, she sighed and said she would have to have chemicals put in it cause it wasn't ready and would have liked more notice. We didn't want to use it until the next day, and we didn't see her until late in the evening. On our way out to dinner, we told her we would not use the hot tub, she said "fine." Her attitude was snooty and dismissive. I did not eat breakfast, the odor of the house upset me, but my daughter said it was very good. Prepared baked eggs, toast, fresh fruit and coffee/tea. We were to sleep there 2 days, we did not stay for breakfast the second day and left very early in the morning of checkout.
I wouldn't go back. Maybe it was a bad day for them and for me.

I am a student who had to stay in Anchorage for 5 weeks for a rotation at ANMC hospital. Camai B&B offered a very comfortable and clean room to stay in for 5 weeks. The best part was that it was only a 10 minute walk to the hospital.

However, hospitality was DEFINITELY an issue!!! When we arrived, we were not specifically told what would and would not be provided to us during our stay. We assumed that since this is a bed AND BREAKFAST, we would be provided breakfast. When we told Caroline about our schedules so that she can have breakfast ready by the time we leave (as stated that we should do in our guidebook in the room), she responded with "I am not going to cook for you." That was a bit cold, I thought. She stated that we are her house guests, and we do not get breakfast. Ummm...okay....you could have made that point clear when we first arrived. Another thing was toilet paper. We ran out of toilet paper, and when I went to ask her for more, she laughed loudly and said "I knew it. I bet Craig that you would be asking for toilet paper. We do not provide it." WTF?? Ummm okay, so now you're BETTING on us instead of telling us that you do not provide it? Right. Real good service right there. Actually, that isn't even service, that is just plain RUDE and uncalled for, especially for an "Award winning bed and breakfast" owner! I have never encountered such a distasteful person as Caroline. Craig was nice during our stay, however, he was a bit creepy to the younger girls....if you know what I mean, such as offering to go in the hot tub one on one with one of the young girls who was also staying there during our stay. Creepy.

Finally, when we first arrived, we were also asked for a cleaning deposit. So we would get that cleaning deposit back if we cleaned the suite before we left. Well, I only found out after our stay from other students who stayed there previously that they were never asked to leave a cleaning deposit OR clean the room after their stay. Why were we charged? I mean I do not mind cleaning up after myself, that is common courtesy. However, I used the disinfectant wipes that were provided by Caroline to wipe down the counter tops. When she came to inspect the room, she felt the counter top and said in a disgruntled tone "not clean." Just those two words, "not clean." Am I your servant? I sure felt like I was being treated like one!! Woman, I used YOUR disinfectant wipes. After that, I used a paper towel damped with water and wiped the counter. Then she approved of that. Caroline also told us that we should be THANKFUL that she is giving us our cleaning deposit back. Right.

Also, they inspect your trash. You read correctly, they INSPECT YOUR TRASH!!! Not that I had anything to hide, it was just weird. I know this because I threw away some un-opened food, and the next day she told me that I shouldn't waste food and that i should donate it.

FUTURE CUSTOMERS BEWARE!!! This place is probably NOT as clean as it looks because she only wants things cleaned with WATER and not any other ANTI-BACTERIAL or disinfectant products!!!!!!!!!! I will NEVER EVER stay there OR recommend anyone stay there if they are in their right minds! I am thankful that I never have to deal with them again!

Response from WarmAkHello, Owner at Camai Bed and Breakfast Inn
Responded Mar 21, 2014
I regret that your stay was not one you recall with pleasant memories. As an inspected and approved member of Anchorage Alaska Bed and Breakfast Association, I welcome you to contact them with your complaint. But first, may I respond to several of your points? To assist students such as yourself, we created a housing option that provides affordability. As a way to do that, we ask that you take care of amenities such as breakfasts and daily cleaning. In our discussion at the time of taking your booking, this was communicated. For a long term stay during the off-season for students, we offer our B&B – our home – under these terms. We have learned from experience to request a cleaning deposit and find it a good incentive for most student guests. Because we have provided lodging for a number of years, our projection of quantities needed (toilet paper, cleaning supplies, etc. ) are historically accurate and are the basis of what was provided to you. You are correct in that we asked that you care for certain items like the antique marble counter-tops in specific ways, and that other surfaces are treated with the disinfectant products. Your allegations regarding Craig’s behavior and the possibility of trash inspection are distasteful and are, at best, based on misunderstanding. Our apology is offered with hopes that your future stays at B&Bs are more to your liking. Our best wishes.

We were happy to spend one nite here june 20 2004 on our way to Denali. This is a class act. Great area, beautiful home, luxury accomidations. Clean and comfortable. From the perfect garden (watch out for the neighborhood moose) to the pillowtop beds, to the good breakfast this B&B has mastered the art of hospitality with privacy perfectly. We even had our own private entrance, bath, microwave, and little fridge, dressing area. Pleanty of reading material and a computer you can use. Just the BEST place to stay!!!!!!!

Space was fine. We had the Peony suite, which was cute and cozy. The linens, towels, etc. weren't quite "luxury" as stated on the website, but whatever - it was all there and clean. Price was good for what we got.

It is run by a working couple, so keep that in mind - they can't offer as much flexibility in checkin times as you might get at a hotel, and you may have to move your car if you park them in.

BUT - Given the good reviews on this website, I was surprised at how the owners behaved. My mother died during our stay, and I asked for a late check-out the next day so that I could make funeral arrangements. I got a heavy sigh and a disgruntled "well HOW late?". I was expecting that even if they couldn't accommodate me, they'd at least be nice about it, maybe throw in a "Sorry for your loss" - that's just basic human decency, right? I would have been taken aback by their attitude even in normal circumstances, which these were not.

Forget them. I certainly won't stay there again.

We stayed at the Camai B & B for two nights. There were some pluses, but more minuses. The breakfasts were very good and we met some very nice travelers at breakfast. My kids loved the availability of hot chocolate packages in our room. The hosts also graciously packed us breakfasts since we had an early flight.
The biggest minus was that it was located in what my husband and I call a dumpy neighborhood. Granted, their house was the nicest on the street but right outside were trailers and boats parked in driveways and in the middle of the cul-de-sac! We have stayed in a lot of b & bs, but never one like this. When we drove up we were bent over laughing and my husband said, "Get us out of this!"; my elementary-aged children asked if we could stay in a hotel instead.
Another minus was the fact that our room shared walls with the office and the phone woke us up in the middle of the night both nights. I mentioned it to one of the hosts--no response.
Also I never did find that trail that their property was supposed to be across from. True, I didn't ask but I did look for it. Also, be forewarned, no bed-making services though they did wash the mugs. Also be forewarned, no shoes allowed on the carpet so in this regard it is kind of like staying at mom's. The hosts were very nice though.

Craig and Caroline didn't seem at all interested in us or in our Alaskan travels. Both appeared to know little about the city or the state and offered very few valuable suggestions. Caroline was absent much of the time and when she was present it was nearly impossible to get a smile out of her, much less exchange pleasantries.

They seem to be running the bed and breakfast only as a money making endeavor. In fact, the very first thing that Craig said to me one morning was "You owe us money". A very pleasant way to start the day indeed!

The breakfasts were good, but I don't know if I'd classify oatmeal as "gourmet".

The rooms were of a good size, the beds were comfortable, and the showers provided plenty of hot water. The walls were a little thin though.

So if your main reason for choosing a bed and breakfast is the room, this might be the place for you. However, if you would also like a little bit of courtesy and thoughtfulness from the owners, I'd suggest looking elsewhere.

Responded Sep 12, 2005
Your complaint is painful to read. It has been a busy summer blessedly filled with many wonderful guests. However, it sounds as if Craig and I are burned out and truly falling down on the hospitality part of operating a bed and breakfast. I apologize for not smiling and enjoying you, our guest, more…no excuses. While we have won awards for our hospitality, it is obvious you did not experience it. While we have lived and traveled in Alaska for more than thirty-three years, it is also obvious you did not benefit from our many and varied experiences. The oatmeal you referred to was steel cut oats with peaches and spices which has a cooking time of about 15 minutes. While I do not like rolled oats, this is one dish my guests and I do thoroughly enjoy. The day we served the steel cut oats, we also served at least three different kinds of fresh fruits on a platter, large glasses of fresh orange juice (not the re-constituted kind), fair-traded Sumatran coffee with real cream, sausage or bacon, and freshly baked scones with Alaskan raspberry jam. On the preceding day and the subsequent day, I served the fruit, juice, coffee, breakfast meat, breads, and an egg dish. Check out my published recipes in Best Recipes from American Country Inns and Bed & Breakfasts with 2004 copyright. I regret not being able to respond directly to Mr. and Mrs. Annonymous' complaint. If I could respond, I would offer them a free gift certificate for a two-night stay at our award-winning B&B. I do want them and everyone to experience our usual outstanding hospitality, and I would promise not to serve oatmeal! Sincerely, Caroline Valentine Camai B&B Anchorage, Alaska
