2021 Travelers' Choice Best of the Best
GreenLeaders Platinum level
Just over an hour's drive from San Jose International Costa Rica airport (SJO), eco-minded travelers from all over the world have reveled in the beauty of Villa Blanca Cloud Forest Hotel, located within the Los Angeles Private Biological Nature Reserve & Research Station in the Canton of San Ramon. The hotel is ideally situated as a gateway to Arenal Volcano and the famous Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. Here, you're immersed in one of the world's most precious and complex jungle ecosystems - the cloud forest. This boutique mountain hotel is nestled on 75-acres of gentle rolling hills, with well-appointed "casitas" and Honeymoon Suites, each with their own fireplace, and surrounded by acres of lush botanical gardens. Originally owned by former president Rodrigo Carazo Odio and First Lady, Estrella Zeledon de Carazo, Villa Blanca has become a renown and cherished Costa Rica destination. The architecture reflects the original farm village concept, with a welcoming Hacienda, offering guests exceptional Costa Rican hospitality, premier dining, a private theater, conference facilities, and pampering spa menu. Also quite unique is a replica of a 14th century Roman wedding chapel, La Mariana, with its hand painted ceramic ceiling. Choose from a variety of nature-based activities, including horseback, zip-lines, and user-friendly guided trials, plus excursions to Arenal and Poas volcanoes, hot springs, and rural-cultural tours. This is the Costa Rica where those who "travel well and travel right" want to go. Please feel free to visit our sister-site, one of the most prestigious Manuel Antonio hotels, Si Como No.

My husband and I had the privilege of staying for two nights at Villa Blanca cloud forest Hotel. The road to the hotel is a bit bumpy, but worth every mile once you reach the top to where the hotel sits nestled on the mountain. Our individual cottage was cozy and comfortable with a beautiful fireplace. Each meal we had was cooked to perfection. The service was 5 stars! We cannot thank enough our waiter, chef and concierge for their attention to detail and making our stay wonderful. On our last night at dinner, the chef gave us samples of the four homemade ice creams for the next day - Lemon, chocolate, coconut and vanilla- they were out of this world. Our time was peaceful and very restful. We would highly recommend Villa Blanca Cloud Forest

My husband and I got married here in July of 2021. All of my family came from the states to stay at the hotel, and came straight from SJO. Besides the initial drive in, which is a little bumpy (no one had problems) we had the BEST time ever. From checking in, to being so accomadating for my family and their needs. The restaraunt is delicious and so quaint and we did not even feel like we had to leave the hotel to experience other things. The bar was perfect for after hours or a happy hour sitting by the fire in their beautiful spacious lobby. The day of our wedding, which was at Villa Blanca, was incredible. We had not one complaint.. they went above and beyond for my husband and I and our guests, despite dealing with COVID protocols as well. We had our ceremony in the chapel, which was breathtaking, and the ceremony in the restaraunt of the hotel. Our guests were so pleased, and loved the food as well provided by Villa Blanca. Our rooms were beautiful and cozy and surrounded by gorgeous wildlife and nature. No tengo palabras, todo fue INCREÍBLE. muchismas gracias a Villa blanca por ser lo mejor, mi familia y yo estamos muyyyy agradecidos. <3

We stayed at the Villa Blanca for 10 nights and we came to love the Villa Blanca staff and property. Everyone was so kind and helpful and the property is so peaceful. We loved the selection of tours. We enjoyed the guided night tour in the forest, the forest day tour and the zipline, all three tours with Jairo who is a biologist. The guided night tour of the forest is a memory we won't forget! The El Sendito Restaurant is very nice and the staff there are amazing especially Julio and Alex. We ate there almost every meal. We highly recommend the Villa Blanca.

Two older guys, not afraid of much….exploring Costa Rica. We could not in any way believe our tour operators booked us into this place!…we have driven through all kinds of terrible driving conditions, the worst you could possibly imagine, in all kinds of unimaginable locations!….. Briefly, we turned off the main road onto the private road leading to the hotel. It was HELL! There was about FIVE MILES of the worst, dilapidated, pot-holed, twisty- turny, broken-up, brick- and- dirt ‘roadway’ which was in appalling condition and which we were forced to navigate at 2 to 5 mph, desperately trying to not get trapped in the huge, unbelievable pot- holes which we just knew were pushing our little rental car beyond its limits! We fully expected to lose a couple of tires or bust up an axle on this poor vehicle…but we kept going, not wanting to - for the first time ever! - admit defeat! It was atrocious! No lighting, pitch black, no hotel in sight! We struggled for about A HALF HOUR with this, at 2 to 5 mph, white-knuckled, and finally reached the top, high up in the middle of nowhere! We both jumped out of the car and almost PRAYED that we had not in fact met a terrible death on the way up, and it took us a while to get over it! We were met by a hotel employee who later nervously explained that the owners were trying to raise the money, an estimated $200.000 to re-surface the driveway! NO-ONE should ever, ever have to go through this…EVER! We had to give up our second night there (already paid in advance!) just so we could crawl back down to the main road next morning in DAYLIGHT, hopefully without tempting Fate and suffering any actual physical harm, and spent that night safe and sound back at the airport, at least already there for our flight first thing next morning. We were just too afraid to risk that nightmare in the early hours in the pitch-black darkness one more time! Our nerves, usually made of steel, just wouldn’t take it! THIS IS NOT A JOKE. IT WAS REAL. AND REALLY, REALLY SCARY!!!!! DON’T DO IT!!!…..p.s…..THERE WAS NOT A SOUL THERE BESIDES US TWO AND A COUPLE OF EMPLOYEES!!! That says it all!!!…

Dear Jhon, Our cordial greeting from Hotel Villa Blanca. We are sorry you found the drive a challenging experience, however we actually own only the last portion (one km) we regularly maintain, with the other 7km a public road the county is in process for needed repairs. However, we honestly can’t recall a guest so overwhelmed with the local county roads of Costa Rica, but again we appreciate you found our hospitality to your liking, the reason we are honored to consistently receive high rating in this forum and others going on 15 years. We hope that you return and visit us again soon as our guests to enjoy both the rural adventure and local hospitality. Sincerely, Carlos Sanchez Operations Manager
