I have given this an 'Average' rating because I think this hotel could do a lot better. As a Brit visiting Alaska for the first time, I want to stay in places that have character and feel part of the landscape. The Van Gilder certainly does that. It is a hotel steeped in the past from the moth eaten grizzly... More

Our family stayed in a two-bedroom suite after taking a glacier cruise in the national park. The beds were comfortable, she water was hot, the towels were plentiful. There was no outside noise. The hotel is blocks away from great shops--including a great coffee shop--and the marine center. I recommend and would stay again.

The Van Gilder is located in downtown Seward's historic district. It is a quaint 1916 hotel that is in the National Registry of historic places. The hotel is easy walking distance to restaurants, bars and shopping. Further, it is only two blocks away from the Alaska SeaLife Center, the Seward Museum and the Seward waterfront. Further, Kenai Fjords National Park... More

An historic hotel that has seen better days. No water glasses in room, no tissues, no hair dryer, seldom anyone at lobby desk with a sign "if you need assistance call..." With front door left unlocked thus no security. Felt like a worn hostel.

Came in late into Seward and there was a booking mix up at the other hotel we were going to stay in and the night staff on shift was awesome with helping get us a room and even gave us a few breakfast vouchers to help get our morning going on our early charters.

Seward is a small charming ocean community. There are several hotels, motels to be found, but the Van Gilder Hotel is one of a historic nature in the downtown area. The location provides easy walking to restaurants, as well as the Marine Center. The rooms are small. The decor is also one of an era gone by. The downside is... More

Our family (teens & adults) spent a couple days at the Van Gilder. We definitely received what we expected - a charming stay in an older building. Dan was very friendly at check-in, no noise from adjoining rooms (which is always a concern for me in older buildings), and nice walking distance from some good eats.

For starters, no staff at front desk, with a sign to call for assistance. No one was ever at the desk to help you. Much clutter and dirt in the hallway. Our room was small with a window that would not close all the way. Exposed wiring where the smoke detector should go. Miniature closet. The blanket on the bed... More

Dan, the hotel manager, upgraded us to a two room suite when we arrived. Four of us were traveling and had booked a smaller room. Second floor room, one room with a sink, double bed and murphy single bed, second room had a double bed and led to a private bathroom with shower and sink. The hotel is clean and... More

Yes, this old girl definitely needs some TLC - but there is so much history and charm in this hotel, it's worth staying in. The building is 100 years old this year - allegedly haunted - beautiful woodwork throughout. The manager, Danny, is a whirlwind of energy and a very useful local guide. He gave us a list of his...
