Came in late into Seward and there was a booking mix up at the other hotel we were going to stay in and the night staff on shift was awesome with helping get us a room and even gave us a few breakfast vouchers to help get our morning going on our early charters.

Seward is a small charming ocean community. There are several hotels, motels to be found, but the Van Gilder Hotel is one of a historic nature in the downtown area. The location provides easy walking to restaurants, as well as the Marine Center. The rooms are small. The decor is also one of an era gone by. The downside is... More

Our family (teens & adults) spent a couple days at the Van Gilder. We definitely received what we expected - a charming stay in an older building. Dan was very friendly at check-in, no noise from adjoining rooms (which is always a concern for me in older buildings), and nice walking distance from some good eats.

For starters, no staff at front desk, with a sign to call for assistance. No one was ever at the desk to help you. Much clutter and dirt in the hallway. Our room was small with a window that would not close all the way. Exposed wiring where the smoke detector should go. Miniature closet. The blanket on the bed... More

Dan, the hotel manager, upgraded us to a two room suite when we arrived. Four of us were traveling and had booked a smaller room. Second floor room, one room with a sink, double bed and murphy single bed, second room had a double bed and led to a private bathroom with shower and sink. The hotel is clean and... More

Yes, this old girl definitely needs some TLC - but there is so much history and charm in this hotel, it's worth staying in. The building is 100 years old this year - allegedly haunted - beautiful woodwork throughout. The manager, Danny, is a whirlwind of energy and a very useful local guide. He gave us a list of his... The Van Gilder is full of character and charm, the Staff are amazing and helpful. The location is amazing and easy to get to everywhere, the only thing that brings it down is everything could do with a little tlc, be careful when booking you choose private bathroom as some come with shared bathroom. Great stay.

As typical in historic hotels, the guest rooms are small, but sufficient for a short stay. The hotel staff allowed us to place a couple of items of food in a refrigerator in the coffee area. Included breakfast was tasty, but they have an unusual arrangement of hosting the breakfast at a restaurant approximately one mile from the hotel. On... More

This historic building has some great potential -- the antique lobby is the highlight of this property. Pictures along the hallways recount interesting facets of Seward history. Rooms are quaint, a little tired, but suitably furnished. WiFi is spotty and slow, as other reviewers have noted. Where attention is most needed is around the edges -- aging carpet, housekeeping closets... More

My husband and I stayed one night while we explored Alaska. The staff was nice enough. We stayed in 208. Pros: The bathroom was very nice and appeared to be recently remodeled from part of room 210. The staff was pleasant enough. We paid the extra $20 for dinner and breakfast included. This included a $25 voucher for dinner at... More
