Our room was perfect for the two of us. The balcony had a beautiful ocean view and it seemed to be centrally located to most of the facilities and dining in the resort Having morning coffee on balcony was a special treat we looked forward to. There were great walking trails and in some locations within the resort there were impressive mountain views. The food and the beverages were good as was the level of service. The wait staff, maintenance, and the house keeping staff were warm and welcoming and everyone seemed to want to make our stay memorable. There were several pools on the property, but we chose to spend most of our lounging time near or at the ocean vista where we were experienced breathtaking sunsets. While there are no actual beach front areas in the resort there were exotic lava rock formations which added an almost surreal and otherworldly nature to the landscape. I must mention that litter was nonexistent in the resort, and we learned that the use of disposable plastic bags had been outlawed on the Kona. I can sum up my experience in four words, we are going back!

We enjoyed our stay here. But I think ratings will depend on what you're looking for. If you are here for a resort stay and don't plan on leaving the hotel, then I would not be giving this a 4 star review - more like 3 stars given the cost. But, if like us, you're just there for a couple of days and your plan is to drive and explore during the days, then this is not a bad place to be. We booked it mainly due to its close proximity to where Kona Adventures does their Manta Ray evening snorkeling trips. You can easily walk to the dock from the hotel - it takes 5 min max! And given the lack of parking at the dock, we were grateful to be able to walk down. They offer valet parking for $35 per day and self park for $25. Note: if you self park, make sure you get a key to exit the lot after you've checked out. We didn't know we'd need this after checking out and found ourselves stuck at the exit gate unable to get out - with cars behind us! I think you can park for free outside the parking area, but you may not get a spot if it's a busy time of day or year. The rooms are comfortable. We had a balcony with a great view of the mountains. The beds are super comfortable and I had the best sleep of our entire holiday at this hotel. The bathrooms are ok - not what I would expect for the prices as they are small and dated. We had clog in the bathtub but housekeeping sorted that out immediately. The shower pressure is good. There seemed to be activities offered daily to those who were using this as a resort stay. The pool is clean and there were loungers available. However, it was October and tourists were limited due to COVID, so I'm not sure that would be the case in "normal" times or in July/August. I just think the prices here are over the top for what it is should you be looking for a resort stay, particularly if you don't have a car and are stuck here all day, every day. The beach is ok - not great. The pool - likewise. As mentioned, the bathrooms are small and dated. The price for drinks is high but I think that's true at all resorts. But for us - it served the purpose we were looking for: a relatively nice place to stay, close to mantas and comfortable for a couple of nights as we made our way around the island.

This is the former Sheraton Kona Resort, which has been acquired by Outrigger and renamed the Outrigger Kona Resort effective August 26. We stayed here for a week to celebrate our 50th Anniversary. I was expecting the place to be torn up and under reconstruction, but it was not. The only evidence of the change when we stayed was the change in signage. Our room was spacious and had a 50% ocean view and 50% view of the pools and "beach" which turned out nice because we could hear the birds singing in the property's palm trees in the mornings on our lanai. Contrary to at least one review, we did not notice any evidence or odor of mold in our room. Our room was clean and the entire hotel was very clean. Now, the hotel is exactly 50 years old but it seems to have aged well. Our bathroom has not been modernized, but was acceptable. We liked the rattan furnishings (not Pier 1 caliber) which gave the room a classy period feel. It looks like the Outrigger was able to retain the Sheraton "heavenly beds" because our bed was very comfortable. The staff was friendly, courteous, and professional from the front desk to the cleaning crew. We had regular interface with the front desk, valets, and restaurant staff and they were universally friendly and accommodating. Absolutely no evidence of enmity toward tourists that was constantly being reported in the media. The Outrigger has the black lava rock beach typical of most of the western part of Hawaii, but we spent a nice day at the Hapuna Beach, about a 1/2 hour away. The hotel is about 10-15 minutes from the Kailua-Kona commercial center. Their main high-end restaurant "Rays on the Bay" is presently closed and it's my guess they will rehab it and put it back in service. The Wailele Cafe on site is good for breakfast and we had a good "day of arrival" dinner there. The pool side cafe has a variety of menu items. Neither of us made use of the spa services. Accessibility including pool accessibility seemed to be generally acceptable. Altogether we enjoyed our stay on the Big Island, and the Outrigger Kona Resort contributed greatly to our stay.

We stayed at the Outrigger (booked while it was a Sheraton) for five days in September 2021. I was very nervous about the hotel after all of the negative reviews. We had an ocean view room (#1312) with a large lanai. The room was beautiful and spotless. It had a dresser large enough for my husband and I to both unpack and a closet with enough hangers to hanger our nicer clothing. The bathroom was a bit dated, but that did not bother me. The shower water pressure seemed laughable when I first turned it on but it had more than enough pressure while showering and washing my hair (very thick hair so water pressure matters!!). As an adult woman I probably would not comfortably fit in the tub there, but would be no problem if needed for a child. Housekeeping was incredible. Nothing was overlooked, down to the coffee being cleaned out of the machine each day and soap/shampoo/conditioner being restocked. The shampoo/conditioner was actually quite lovely - normally can’t say that for hotels. Self parking was a breeze and not too far of a walk. Sometimes digging out the room key to get in/out is the lot was annoying but - not a deal breaker. Many hotel guests seemed to park outside of the lot on the street for free parking. (Lots of space) The pool was huge, although we only spent one morning there as there is so much to do on the big island. Finding a lounger by the pool did not seem to be an issue. The pool/beach towels they provide from a kiosk with your room key so you aren’t limited to two towels like some other resorts. This was convenient as we were snorkeling all over the island with plenty of towels in the car! The setting is so neat, being right on the edge of the island, on the rocks. It would have been nice to have been on a beach but we had plenty of beach / relaxation time on Maui and felt we were on the big island to explore. The hotel location was very convenient to the downtown Kona area for the handful of restaurants there. It felt like a hike to other areas on the island. My husband drove an hour for golf. We spent a lot of time in the car (you need to drive even to the restaurants in downtown Kona) We did not eat at the hotel but did grab drinks at the bar one evening. There was live music and it was a fun atmosphere. It was not my favorite mai tai on the island (could have been my least favorite, actually) but the convenience and atmosphere were nice. They were also offering them to go. The bed was so comfortable. I got some of the best sleep I’ve had in a really long while while staying here. I would happily stay at the Outrigger when we return to the big Island.
