We required some room facilities through hotel application form but it seems nobody reads this. Also the receptionist didn't inform us about additional facilities we can use so we had to remind him.
Restaurant food is ok but there is a feeling that there is not enough stuff and that they cannot prepare tables on time.
The room was ok but needs renovation. Cooling unit was leaking and during the first night ceiling fell on the floor and we had water all over. Hotel reacted fast and during our breakfast they repaired the ceiling. After repairing water was steel pouring from the climate but ceiling didn't fall again during our stay.
Room was cleaned every day and that was ok.
Last day we spotted cockroaches on the floor.

We stayed here for 2 nights. The size room was good and it was clean.
It was hot in the room, AC was not working (they said it’s just May and they didn’t turn on it yet). The fridge in the room was not cold enough (it was almost the same temperature in the fridge as in the room). We booked 1 double bed, we get 2 beds together (at least they were big). But it’s not what we booked and payed for.
Sea view was amazing (NOT!), we couldn’t see any sea from balcony cause there were plenty of trees… don’t pay more for a sea view - it’s not worth it. The food (breakfast and dinner) were good. I wouldn’t come back for that kind of price, it’s overated.

The hotel was very clean the room was great wifi was good food repetitive but OK but if you are British don't expect to hear English spoken I was there for 2 weeks heard English spoken once by a three people in the next complex . Our welcome letter in the room was in German no trips from the hotel only a train to take you to Umag (cost £13 ) we felt very isolated with the language barrier. We are a couple that like to see the surrounding towns but no buses running only taxi which were expensive The weather was perfect but won't return.

Having previously stayed at a Melia hotel in Menorca that provided excellent food and service, we choose the Sol Umag in Croatia expecting the same standard. Unfortunately for use even though there are lots of plus points, the food was a disappointment. We'd booked the hotel for a week and found the food, although a good standard, very repetitive. Having stayed at a Melia resort before, we were expecting a far better choice of foods. The main courses were varied each evening but the accompaniments, sides, desserts, fruit and salad selection was repeated daily and offered little choice. Waiting for drinks in the dining room was also very slow. Breakfast was the same every morning, with ample choice but little variation.

On a plus point the hotel is in a great location, is exceptionally clean and had great staff. There is ample parking too if you are driving.

Just a same that the food was so monotonous, but maybe we were spoilt in the previous Melia hotel.

We went for a week 13 - 20 August and we had a good family holiday. Good food, especially seafood, for the buffet breakfasts and dinners (we were half board). There are several beaches that are within a 5 minute walk of the hotel but the hotel beach was a series of concrete platforms that had ladders into sea. Our only minus point was that the rooms were very basic for the price. We were on the fourth floor and the water pressure was very up and down. Good kids club and the mini water park was enough for our seven year old; however any child over 11 would find both boring.

The Sol Umag Hotel, like many of the hotels we saw in Istria was unimpressive from the outside, (be warned it is orange) as it was built 35 or so years ago. However visitors to Umag should not be put off by the out-dated hotel exteriors. The Sol Umag was refurbished in 2003, and the interior is what you would expect from a 4 star hotel in Europe. It was bright, clean and modern. The rooms are air conditioned, of a good size and very clean. The service from the hotel staff is excellent and unobtrusive and whilst the older staff members may not speak english, most younger team members speak english very well. Umag as a resort seems mostly to be visited by Russians and Germans and owing to its proximity to Italy - Italians. According to our holiday rep, in the whole resort in the first week of Aug 05 there were only 85 British tourists, but to us was a plus! The hotel is not yet geared to the British tourist, more towards Europeans in general, which is fine. The food (we stayed half board) was heavily influenced by Germany, Russia and Italy, but it was of a reasonable standard and variety. The pool area is quite small for the size of hotel, but adequate and not overly busy. There is no beach. There is instead a bathing platform full of sun loungers facing out to sea, which is fine especially as the water is crystal clear and very clean. The view is beautiful. I would recommend paying that little bit extra and getting a room with a sea view - much better than a view of the car park. The hotel is a good 20 minute walk to Umag town, which is a small yet pretty cobbled town, with nice bars and restaurants. Car hire is very easy and driving around is very simple too - although you do have to have your headlights on by law all the time. Really recommend driving to Slovenia for the day. It is a breathtaking country and given the proximity of Umag to the border too good an opportunity to miss. You can also take a day trip to Venice from Umag. Not an awful lot to do in Umag itself, but the rest of Istria is worth seeing as it was heavily influenced by Italy and was untouched by the troubles. All in all it was a good experience. Sol Umag perhaps lacks the sophistication of some other European hotels, but it scores highly on quality.

We stayed in the Sol Umag right after it's renovation in 2003 and I can certainly recommend it!

The hotel looks basic from the outside but is luxurious on the inside. The restaurant serves great food (buffet - breakfast & dinner) and if you want you can lunch in the poolside snack bar, which also has some nice dishes. There's a great spa located in the hotel which you can use at extra charge. They offer several relaxation treatments.

Hotel staff was very friendly and provided the guests with an entertainment show every evening.

Tennis-lovers will certainly like Umag since the hotel is within walking distance from the Umag court, home of an ATP tournament, and there are plenty of tennis courts, as well as on the hotel grounds as in the neigbourhood.

The hotel is located right at the seashore so you can choose between the hotel pool or the sea. Lots of rocks in the sea, though, and no sand beach. It is a pity the inside pool is closed during summer because the outside pool area can get pretty crowded.

On one side of the hotel, within walking distance, is a tourist resort with some shops and bars. On the other side is the town Umag. It is a longer walk to get there, but certainly worth walking. Don't miss the ice cream in Umag, since they litterally trow it on your cone across the street, buy ice cream and get an entertainment show for free! The market is also worth your time.

One thing I would also certainly recommend is to rent a car and drive into the mainland and along the coast. Don't spend all your time at the seaside. The hotel staff can help you in selecting great Istrian destinations to visit (including really beautiful artist towns and nice caves).

One more tip: you can take a boat from Umag to Venice, which makes a great day trip. Don't forget your passport, since you will be crossing the Italian border.

I stayed at the Sol Umag from the 23rd-30 May 2006. it is a great location, but remember it is a 2 hour transfer from the Airport which if you are keen to see a bit of the country then its fine. I found the rooms clean and spacious and the staff really friendly. I chose half board as I was travelling alone - there is a buffet every day and does tend to get a bit bland after a while if you are a bit of a foodie like me and like trying new dishes. There is an indoor and outdoor pool and it was a nice change not to find all the seats booked with towels like some resorts!! It is probably nicer to sit on the loungers on the waters edge and take in the great views. The water is clean and crystal clear. This area is great for sports. Tennis is very big as is cycling. There were 2 places to hire a bicycle and you can safely cycle around all the resorts which lie alongside each other. The small town is about a 15 min walk and has many ice-cream parlours and restaurants. The Wellness Centre was pure luxury! Great relaxing atmosphere and good quality treatments. They also have a relaxation area which you can book for 2 hours which has 3 jacuzzi's, 2 saunas and a steam room - really recommend that. All round - good quality, comfortable. This is a quiet resort so if you are out for some night life you may be dissapointed. You might want to note that there were not many English speaking people - about 5 couples in total.
