Formerly the Roughley Manor, this historic desert inn returns to its roots, honoring Bill & Elizabeth Campbell, the original homesteaders in the 1920's. Step back in time and experience old-world charm at this historic desert inn, located minutes from Joshua Tree National Park in the Mojave Desert, California. What began as a modest homestead property in 1925 has been transformed over the years into a modern day desert oasis, with twelve spacious and luxurious guest suites. Unlike anything you'll find in the Mojave Desert, The Campbell House Inn is a Philadelphia style Colonial house built in the late 1920's by early homesteaders and renowned archeologists Bill & Elizabeth Campbell. Set on 25 secluded acres, surrounded by towering Washingtonia fan palms, The Campbell House property offers a peaceful retreat, where you can experience the quiet and calm of the open desert. Discover Joshua Tree National Park and experience our breathtaking starry night skies. Make sure to take a dip in the pool or hot tub. Find some shade and unwind in one of our many sitting areas, or play a game of bocce ball with the kids and reconnect. The time is yours. Choose from two guest suites on the second floor of the main house, and ten cottages on the surrounding property. Enjoy complimentary breakfast with pool and hot tub access. Rooms are spacious and elegantly decorated. Complimentary Wi-Fi and Direct TV. Select rooms are pet-friendly.

It is a beautiful garden oasis, with cottages to give privacy. The rooms are roomy and well decorated, the bathrooms are large, with a large tub/shower.
The room was very clean. We appreciated that the kitchen had real wine glasses and mugs, not plastic or paper.
The breakfast was excellent and generous.
And the air-conditioning was wonderful, 72 in our room 107 outside.
We stayed in the Sunrise room and would like to try another room someday. We went to see the stars and visit Joshusa Tree National Park. We saw lots of stars on a moonless night. At home in Orange County, you can count all of the stars on your fingers and half of them seem to be headed for LAX.
However, Twentynine Palms has very little to offer for eating, sightseeing or shopping.
We enjoyed the wildlife too, jack rabbits, owls, desert Iguana and a beautiful snake. And there is much evidence of other larger wildlife visitors at night.
Nice grounds and pool.
Erica and Heidi and anyone else we dealt with were a pleasure.
We weren't able to visit the inside of the Campbell House because it was closed because of the off season or Covid restrictions.
We would like to come again in the fall or Spring and see the House and enjoy the desert when it's cooler.

This is a charming historic inn very close to the National Park. The inn consists of a couple rooms in the original rock mansion and cottages which are scattered around the lovely grounds. Some of the rooms are in wooden farmhouse style buildings and two are in an old rock building. All have traditionally styled interiors, not fancy or trendy but very nice and comfortable. We stayed two nights in the Museum Room which is in the original rock building at the edge of the property. We very much liked this room because it has two patios, one of which faces out to the open desert and includes a fire pit. It seems like you are out on your own. The one negative about this room is that the internet connection is very poor due to the thick rock walls. The entire property is really wonderful with various seating areas in very well maintained desert landscaping. A delicious breakfast is served in the large dinning room or on the terrace depending on the weather. The service was superb in all respects. The one suggestion I have is to replace the coffee makers in the rooms with modern versions and supply decent coffee. What is supplied is really bad. Other than that minor complaint I highly recommend this accommodation for visiting Joshua Tree National Park. And be sure to eat at their sister property the 29 Palms Inn which is located a few minutes away and is delicious.

Thank you for the stellar review and visit, Marti. We are pleased to hear you enjoyed the ambiance and style of the historic Campbell House along with our staff. It’s wonderful that you enjoyed the Museum room in the main house. Our staff works hard on the house made complimentary breakfast, so were happy to hear you its appreciated. Thank you very much for the coffee suggestion, we will take that into consideration and see what we can do to improve that. Once again, we are thrilled that you enjoyed your time at the Campbell House and would love to see you again soon. Best, The Campbell House

Stumbled upon this b&b because we had a hard time finding a house in the area that didn't have a 2 night minimum requirement. We were so glad we stayed here. It's a 5 minute drive to the Oasis visitor center and 20 minutes drive to skull rock. The campbell house consists of the main house, many suites and cottages. We got a room by the front entrance in the Cholla Room. Free parking out front. The room has 2 queen beds, large size kitchen with microwave, dining area with 4 chairs, frig, 1 tub/shower bathroom and a nice front porch. Due to covid we were unable to enjoy their typical breakfast spread in the dining room. A very nice breakfast package was stored in the frig for us. It was so much food we had enough for breakfast and lunch! (yogurt, granola, baked goods, eggs, muffins, sourdough bread, quiche, and juices/milk) I've stayed at many high end resorts and air b&b and the room we stayed in was by far the cleanest. I'm ocd when it comes to cleanliness so I will check the baseboards and every surface during my stay and to my surprise, I couldn't find dust or a single left over hair anywhere. Bravo to the cleaning staff! We walked around the grounds after our long day of hiking and wanted to enjoy a night of star gazing but unfortunately the moon was so bright that night we didn't have the best stargazing experience. We enjoyed some family time in the jacuzzi and the kids loved swinging and running around the large property. So charming! Can't wait to return.

Wow! We arrived at the Campbell House to find a well maintained cottage. Shabby chic. So clean and sanitized in this age of Covid. The property contains various cottages and one main house, a pool and a common area under an oasis of palm trees. Absolute perfection. Felt as if we were on a movie set from the 60s. Relaxing and inviting. Breakfast was delivered to our room (fruit, egg quiche, bread, homemade granola, delicious coffee and tea). Loved the pool and grounds. Strong internet and TV. Highly recommend this Inn if you are visiting Joshua Tree National Park.

So lucky to find the Campbell House for overnight and being able to book a massage with Malik to ease the aches of a long drive. The property is gorgeous, the main house and massage room is located in a 1924 stone house and there are separate cabins on lovely grounds. The staff couldn’t have been nicer and more helpful. We booked the Sunset cabin with views to the desert but comfortably equipped with a small kitchen, bath tub and bath, TV, bathrobes, couch and queen bed. After my wonderful 1 1/2 hour massage with Malik (the cost was what we pay for 1 hour at home), we went to the Twenty Nine Palm Inn (Campbell’s House sister property) and its awarding winning restaurant for dinner before coming back in the rain to our cozy cabin.
Breakfast was delicious. Besides a continental option, a hot breakfast of sweet potato soufflé and sausage was served.
Heidi, Shannon who organized our massage with Malik, and other staff were warm, responsive, and helpful. What a treat!

Happened on this lovely Inn a few years back when we were returning from Arizona & decided to take a side trip thru Joshua Tree National Park. Less than a mile from the Park's East entrance in 29 Palms, this historic gem of a property is a secluded getaway to enjoy peace & quiet relaxation. We've stayed in 3 of their 12 rooms, each very different & comfortable. The staff is exceptional and has followed excellent protocols during the pandemic. Although they can't at this time serve breakfast, unlimited coffee is available in the room along with a refrigerator stocked with delicious breakfast items, granola/yogurt, fruit, quiche, green chile egg souffle muffins, breakfast breads, etc that you can heat in the microwave and enjoy on your private patio or anywhere on the spacious grounds.
Every morning with a cup of coffee in hand as I wait for the sun to rise, I watched jack rabbits hop around the scrub brush, birds singing as they awakening to a new day, lizards seeking shelter from the soon to be hot sun, arabian horses on the property next door neighing and the sound of a rooster in the distance. But the best in show is the two resident owls sitting up high in the palm fronds keeping watch over their nest. What a beautiful sight! Did we hate to leave!
Big shout out to Liz, director of operations. She is wonderful & takes great care of the guests! Thank you Liz! We met Heidi, the owner on our trip out last fall. Thanks for the exceptional Hospitality! You are doing a phenomenal job during these crazy times!

My wife and I and another couple stayed in the Sunrise and Sunset rooms in April 2022. The rooms are in standalone buildings with a great porch area to enjoy the evenings and early mornings. The accommodations were spacious, comfortable and clean. We enjoyed eating breakfast in the Inn's outdoor garden area. The location is close to the National Park and made access to the hiking trails quite convenient. We would happily stay there again if in the area. Definitely recommend.

I see that I am the 605th reviewer, and 604 reviews gave the Campbell House a five-star rating. Well…I will be boring and do the same! This place is simply wonderful! We stayed in a cottage which was spacious, clean, modern, and filled with thoughtful touches to make us feel right at home. The grounds are delicious, with couches and chairs spread around to enjoy 29 Palms in the sun or in the shade. The staff, to a person, are helpful and delightful to speak with. The location is easy access to the north entrance of Joshua Tree National Park. I cannot come up with a single criticism. I would be delighted to stay here again, and have already recommended it to friends

OK, this is a lovely place in a lovely setting, and the room was spacious and comfortable. BUT... We booked on line and carefully chose the most expensive room in main house, but were switched to a different room (with no price reduction). The place was deserted - key under the mat, note on the door to call with questions. For $200 a night, COVID or not, a little personal touch would be nice. We called to ask for ice, and there is none. "You can drive 3 miles to the 29 Palms Inn". Come on - even Motel 6 has an ice machine. Breakfast stuffed in the fridge, no room service unless you beg. What a ripoff!

Hello, Nice to hear you enjoyed the setting and room. I have looked into your comments a bit to see how we can improve our guests experience. You did book on line but the room you stayed in is the room you booked on line, it was not changed. We have had the main house closed to online booking since early COVID days. The property is very quiet and often feels no one is there but someone is there pretty much 24/7. They live on site. And breakfast.. most people have been very happy with our COVID inspired in room breakfast. As the restrictions are lifting, we are working on our version of breakfast. We continue to look for new ways to provide a relaxing, unique desert experience. Thank you

What a delight to find this little gem “in the middle of nowhere!” It’s a charming little oasis in the desert! Located in the remodeled “barn” (you’d never know!), our spacious room – fittingly named “Oasis” – was equipped with a microwave, refrigerator, coffee maker, dishes and glassware. The main Campbell House itself is a beautiful restored mansion. That’s where they serve up a delicious warm breakfast in the morning and fresh cookies and fruit in the afternoon!

I live in a Dark Sky Preserve in Idaho and found the dark skies at Campbell House compelling. The night skies are stunning as are the grounds and accommodations.
