Formerly the Roughley Manor, this historic desert inn returns to its roots, honoring Bill & Elizabeth Campbell, the original homesteaders in the 1920's. Step back in time and experience old-world charm at this historic desert inn, located minutes from Joshua Tree National Park in the Mojave Desert, California. What began as a modest homestead property in 1925 has been transformed over the years into a modern day desert oasis, with twelve spacious and luxurious guest suites. Unlike anything you'll find in the Mojave Desert, The Campbell House Inn is a Philadelphia style Colonial house built in the late 1920's by early homesteaders and renowned archeologists Bill & Elizabeth Campbell. Set on 25 secluded acres, surrounded by towering Washingtonia fan palms, The Campbell House property offers a peaceful retreat, where you can experience the quiet and calm of the open desert. Discover Joshua Tree National Park and experience our breathtaking starry night skies. Make sure to take a dip in the pool or hot tub. Find some shade and unwind in one of our many sitting areas, or play a game of bocce ball with the kids and reconnect. The time is yours. Choose from two guest suites on the second floor of the main house, and ten cottages on the surrounding property. Enjoy complimentary breakfast with pool and hot tub access. Rooms are spacious and elegantly decorated. Complimentary Wi-Fi and Direct TV. Select rooms are pet-friendly.

We’ve been coming to Joshua Tree NP for many years staying at several motels/hotels. We finally found a gem in the desert! If you’re looking for quiet, comfortable, and beautiful grounds look no further. Hospitality is unmatched! Approximately 12 units provide solitude and comfort. Not to be overlooked.

Love this place. Beautiful grounds, fountains, birds, giant palm trees. We enjoyed the stay here with a nice continental breakfast outside each morning. A few more breakfast items would be nice. Love the history of the owners building the place themselves in the 20-30’s. Truly a nice, clean, roomy place. We chose this to visit Joshua Tree National Park, another fun place.

My wife and I and another couple stayed in the Sunrise and Sunset rooms in April 2022. The rooms are in standalone buildings with a great porch area to enjoy the evenings and early mornings. The accommodations were spacious, comfortable and clean. We enjoyed eating breakfast in the Inn's outdoor garden area. The location is close to the National Park and made access to the hiking trails quite convenient. We would happily stay there again if in the area. Definitely recommend.

Campbell is a unique, historic, collection of buildings that truly is an oasis in 29 Palms. The property is very conveniently located near the 29 Palms Death Valley Visitors’ Center. We stayed in the Sunset cottage; it faced the desert, so it was so nice to come “home” to at the end of a day of hiking/sightseeing in Death Valley, sit on the porch and enjoy the peace & quiet of a calming sunset. The only shortcoming of the inn was the fact that breakfast was always the same each morning, and there was no allowance for special-need diets. Breakfast each day, served buffet-style, consisted of quiche, assorted homemade breads, hard-boiled eggs, fruit, Greek yogurt (cranberries & granola, to add).

We highly recommend the Campbell House, it's really a special place. Our room (Cholla) was delightful, as were all the staff we came in contact with. After staying at the Furnace Ranch and the Death Valley Inn, the Campbell was a breathe of fresh air. We would return !

We stumbled across this desert gem and are so glad we did! Clean, friendly, private, quiet, quaint...can't say enough positive about this property. Close proximity to Joshua Tree NP. Pool area is not modern, but clean and functional for post hike relaxation.

I helped to organize a group visit to 29Palms Inn and the Campbell House which was a big success. Liz was cheerful and great to work with every turn of the way. I stayed at the Campbell House and enjoyed its beauty and character. The bed (in Palms) was perfect. The room was spacious. I had all I needed. Now, admittedly, I prize aesthetics and comfort far above add-ons such as room service or breakfast, which they provided in-room and was only typical of an American breakfast that has the impossible job of trying to please everyone. For me the best add-ons were the great horned owl silhouetted in a tree at sunset, the robins singing, the turkey vultures airing their wings in a tree in the morning, the coyote at dawn etc etc

Loved the Campbell House! Heidi and the staff were so helpful. We stayed in the Oasis Room - a lovely modernized room and bigger than it seems in the photos. It was like a studio apartment. After a long flight it was much needed! Bed was comfortable and the sheets amazingly soft. There is a little kitchenette with everything you need. The bathroom was nicely appointed with a very large tub and dispensed shampoo/conditioner/body wash. The towels were also amazingly soft. Two short robes are provided, as are coffee and tea. It was very quiet, being on the end of the building. The blackout shades worked well and were definitely needed! Beautiful grounds we wished we had more time to explore. Breakfast in-room was yogurt, granola, 2 types of quiche, 2 muffins, and 2 fruits. My only complaint is I wish the wifi were stronger. It was usually 2 wifi bars and kicked me off when my husband signed in to the wifi. It was just a little slow to do anything more than browse pages. But you’re there to relax and disconnect in general, so overall it’s not a huge problem if you don’t need a lot of wifi. Definitely eat at the sister property’s restaurant, the 29 Palms Inn Restaurant (for now open to Inn and Campbell House guests only). Their to-go picnic lunches are perfect for taking into Joshua Tree National Park for lunch too! We’ll definitely be back the next time we’re in the area - and hopefully stay for longer!

In mid-February, my partner and I stayed at the Campbell House for four nights, taking our time to enjoy both the property as well as explore Joshua Tree National Park at our leisure. We stayed in The Palms, the middle of three cottages side-by-side. Originally, we booked the Campbell Suite online but subsequently were informed that the main house, which includes the Campbell and Magnolia Suites, was closed. Along with that, the complimentary breakfast normally served in the main house dining room was replaced by a breakfast box placed in the room's refrigerator. Having said all that, we truly enjoyed our stay. What we liked: 1. Great location within minutes of the entrance to Joshua Tree National Park. 2. Palm trees galore and spacious grounds creating the ambience of an oasis. 3. Spacious and comfortable room, with the best part being the king-sized bed. Nice shower with good water pressure (important in the desert). 4. Decent though not robust wifi. Things that could be better: 1. There was no in-person welcome. We received an email on the day of arrival with "arrival instructions." We basically had access to our room without having to formally check-in. A registration form was placed on the kitchen counter in the room for us to complete. 2. If I hadn't personally delivered the registration form to the property host the morning after our arrival, we wouldn't have had contact with anyone associated with Campbell House. To refresh our morning breakfast box, we were instructed to call the 29 Palms Inn (sister property and the restaurant location) the day before we wanted more breakfast items. 3. The lovely-looking outdoor pool is "solar heated," which means it's not heated. So during our stay in mid-February, the pool wasn't usable. 4. While our room was perfectly comfortable, the decor was far from what we would desire in our own home--traditional in a grandmotherly sort of way. That judgement, of course, is purely personal and subjective . 5. Housekeeping is on request only (and by 11:00A). We truly enjoyed our stay and will most likely return. The Palms room cost $255/night plus tax. In the grand scheme of things, this is probably OK. However, in the age of Air B&B, the Campbell House feels like a very expensive Air B&B. I wonder how sustainable that is?

We chose the Campbell House because of the rave reviews. Our experience affirms those reviews. They utilize contactless check-in, which worked out well. In the small fridge was a box containing granola, yogurt, fruit, muffins, and bread - enough for breakfast for two people for two days. In the kitchen was a small coffee pot, decaf and regular. They also had plenty of teas. Our room, the Cholla, had two queen beds, a kitchenette, dining table for four, full-size couch and love seat, coffee table, side table between the couch and love seat, large screen TV, bookcase with Readers Digest books, armoire, soaking tub, two ceiling fans, two metal chairs and a table on a covered front porch. We had neighbors who were loudly enjoying themselves outside (it was not rude or late), but once they went inside next door, we couldn’t hear a thing from them. There is a swimming pool and hot tub on the premises as well. The grounds are beautiful. While staying here, we saw a coyote, roadrunner (yes, the coyote was after the roadrunner, which just flew into a tree; for once, the coyote came out of the ordeal uninjured), two owls, and many bats. The night sky outside is beautiful and full of stars. The Milky Way was plainly visible. All of these were real treats for us. Car parking is right outside the door. The entrance to Joshua Tree National Park is almost a straight ten-minute drive from the house. We spent two nights here and slept in comfortable silence. The sunsets were beautiful to watch from the porch while sipping wine.
