What a fab hotel, well situated and clearly looked after. We stopped off for one night en route to Croatia and called back to the hotel on our return journey. Larger than usual rooms and in excellent condition, two of the best rooms allocated ever and I mean ever. The food too wa

Does the hotel offer the Zell Am See summer card?
Hello, thank you for the question and the interest in our hotel. For the Zell am See/ Kaprun card you have to be a member, but we are not a member. So we have a guest card, which give you small discounts for the excursions behind that card. Most of it are 10%. We hope we help you. If you have any questions don´t hesitate to contact us. Kind regards and a nice day! Your Hotel zum Hirschen Team and Family Pacalt

Going late Aug/early Sept 2015. Any problems with guests from Middle East? Have seen a couple of bad reports on Trip Advisor, and spoken to an Austrian couple we met 2 weeks ago, who said British travellers are being put off by the invasion. Not the Austria we have come to love over many past holidays. Honest comments please.
I think the general answer to your question should be that it is not a problem. I live in Vienna and I hope I have an international tolerant perspective. Cultural differences enrich the experience. There were international guests from all over the world, many of them absolutely charming. But every culture and every country has its share of rich, arrogant people who think hotel staff are not professionals but slaves. Some rich Middle Eastern States may have more, but I have seen the same attitude from Russians and dare I say it, occasionally form Brits and Americans too! In our stay, the behaviour at breakfast of a large Middle Eastern party and their "attendants" was quite shocking. The women who sat separately refused to use a table set for breakfast and took over one already prepared for lunch. Then refused to use crockery or cutlery and the mess they left reduced a senior member of staff to tears. The same clients at the buffet thought it acceptable to take a bread roll, examine it, and then replace it! We found it hard to enjoy our breakfast in such circumstances. In a way it is hard to blame the tourists from the middle East, rather those who market the town and its hotels without training their staff adequately. I have worked in multi-faith, international schools for decades, and there are ways to manage cultural differences which minimise conflict. I did not feel the staff in Zell had quite got to grips with that. But maybe it has improved as they gain more experience. I don't think this should be enough to deter other tourists though for the lakes I would rather recommend the Salzkammergut, especially if you avoid the more obvious tourist honeypots like Sankt Wolfgang. Even better go south to the Millstättersee - unspoilt and beautiful, with better weather too on the sunny side of the Alps. Avoid the Tauern motorway tunnel and the queues by driving over the mountains - so make the journey part of your holiday. Wörthersee is more commercialised and built up but the southern side is quieter and again very lovely.
