The bad news first. I had a single room which was perfectly nice except that there were 2 mattresses there of which only one was made up (this only served to emphasise my aloneness!). I suspect two people were accommodated there on occasion but the 2 mattresses necessitated repositioning of the bed meaning I had no bedside light accessible to me. This was a safety issue in the middle of the night. The hotel advertises a spa/wellness area which comprises a small (dipping only really) pool, foot spa and two saunas and resting area. The brochure in the room clearly states that as the saunas are turned on at 4 p.m. children are not allowed in the area after that time. During my stay, there was a group of families together whose children were down in the pool area every evening jumping into the small pool (about 4x3 metres)(jumping in expressly forbidden) and occupying the deckchairs with their things despite never using them. These children were aged around 7 years to 12 years. With 7 or so in the pool at one time, there was no possibility for anyone else to enter or have any peaceful enjoyment. Furthermore, use of the saunas was pointless as there was no relaxation due to the shrieking of the children in the pool all the time. Three teenage girls from the same group of families kept opening the sauna door and leaving it open which, needless to say, let all the heat out. Others besides myself complained to reception but nothing was done about it. On one evening midweek, I asked pointedly if children were permitted after 4 pm. This was at 4.20 pm and I said that it was impossible to enjoy the sauna with the noise. I was told that they were on holiday and it was difficult and I was asked to give them until 5 p.m. and they would advise the parents that the children must be gone by then. I reluctantly agreed to this and came down at 5. 10 p.m. to find the children all still there and no attempt by the parents to remove them. It was also the case that the children were down there unaccompanied at times which, given their ages, was a recipe for tragedy. If you value the spa relaxation on a ski holiday as I do, I would not recommend going to this hotel. My experience would stop me returning. As a solo traveller, I had looked forward to a nice sitting area after dinner. The bar area in this hotel is very small and insufficient for the numbers who stay there. As such, there were times when there was nowhere to sit and I had no option but to return to my room to read. The good points. The staff who cleaned the rooms and those in the restaurant/bar were very nice and the food was very good. The hotel made an effort at entertainment during the week which was nice. They had house cocktails for before dinner which were good. As a skier, the hotel is a few minutes walk from the CityExpress lift and very central for apres ski strolling. Will I return? If I saw that they were advertising the spa area as adults only, definitely. Otherwise, probably not. It was a huge disappointment to me this past week being unable to enjoy a relaxing time after coming in from the slopes. Realistically, the pool is too small for children who wish to have fun and there is a large town pool a short walk away where families could bring children who wished to have pool fun. I feel that the hotel should either make it clear that the spa area is adult only or they should rigidly enforce their rule of no children after 4 p.m.…
My friend and I stayed here for a week as part of a Crystal ski holiday. Excellent food (never went hungry), great room (we had a superior room) and lovely staff who were very helpful and friendly. Great location to at the start of the of the pedestrian area of the town, so easy walk to the bars, plus just over the road from the main bus stops for skiing at Kaprun or Saalbach, plus only 3-4 mins walk to the city express gondola. Would certainly recommend and come back
Location is great, easy walk to the lake, ski lift or ski buses. Staff are excellent, helpful, friendly, good English Clean and tidy everywhere and in good decorative order Bedroom a good size, big windows, bed very comfy And the food is fantastic: great choice from three options, high quality of ingredients, skilled cooking and good portions for dinner, plus a wonderful wide choice of options for breakfast (meals part of the package with Crystal Ski) Minor quibbles: Drinks, particularly soft drinks, seemed slightly more expensive than elsewhere No tea/coffee facility in the room Underfloor heating, so if you like to sleep in a cool room it can be a bit hot and you have to open the window. They hotel did adjust the temperature down for us when asked but the room was clearly well insulated so some (pretty cold) air needed to be let in. But see what the hotel can do first (and I think some premium rooms have temperature controls from what some people said) Location is central so some noise outside. But with Austrian bars and restaurants shutting down at 10 due to Covid it was not a problem for us. In a normal ski season with bars open to the early hours it might be an issue if you need the window open to sleep.…
Great hotel. Clean and comfortable and only a 10 minute walk from the City Express lift. Staff were friendly and helpful. Rooms were warm and spacious with great showers and plenty of hot water. Plenty of choice for breakfast and dinner was fantastic every night with meat, fish and vegetarian options. Definitely recommend.
Booked this hotel at the last minute as part of a package with Crystal. The location is on the main road through Zell, so expect some traffic noise if you have the windows open. But it is perfectly located for the ski lift and for the buses to Kaprun, Saalbach, etc. All the staff were friendly and helpful and the room though minimalist in style was spacious and comfortable. We were really impressed with the food - breakfast and evening meals were excellent. Although they’d not had any notice they catered well for our daughter who eats a vegan diet, not something we expected to be honest. We would definitely recommend.
Just back from a week in this lovely hotel. Not sure if it's a family run hotel but it certainly has that kind of feeling. The staff could not have been nicer. Our room was a family room which was more like an apartment, one large double room, one single room and a large living area. Perfect for a family or small group and it was all new, felt like we were the first guests. There was a great spread for breakfast each morning, everyone was catered for. I really liked the scrambled eggs and bacon. We had dinner there a few times and they were the best meals we had in Zell am See. The location was perfect, right in the centre of town and only 5 minutes walk from the ski lift. We couldn't recommend highly enough.
My boyfriend and I stayed 2 nights and were completely satisfied. Nice and comforting personell, delicious meals, beautiful rooms. Wonderful breakfast which offers everything you could wish for. You can also order something that will be prepared freshly in the kitchen. The next beach is just around the corner and can be reached by foot or bike.
We had a really good 4 night stay. The food was amazing. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Rooms were nice and clean And quiet. Family friendly, and we look forward to the next time we can visitor Austria, Zell am see And hotel Zum Hirschen Thanks you Fam Reiffenstein
We had a great week at the hotel on our skiing holiday. The hotel is just a short walk from the main gondola, and right in the middle of town. The food was great, the staff were fantastic and the dog was adorable. We had a room at the front overlooking the street and the ski slopes. It was lively at night, but never enough to keep us awake, and the town quieted down pretty early on. It’s just well enough located to be central and great for apres ski and just far enough away from the big late bars to not be disturbed. We played cards most nights in the lounge area by the bar and the bar staff ensured that we had a constant supply of wine and beer. The owners family spent a couple of nights in the bar and they were all lovely and really added to the atmosphere. We normally went to bed about midnight, and the staff never asked us to leave, or make us feel anything but welcome through the week, as opposed to a suggestion made in a couple of reviews. The Gin Bar downstairs is another great bar with lots of atmosphere and no noticeable closing time and they also run a popular apres ski bar outside the hotel. If you don’t fancy the bars in the hotel there are a myriad of them with a five minute walk.…
We had a great week here and really enjoyed our stay. The staff were friendly, accommodation clean and food lovely, including three evening starters! We even had a cheese fondue upon request which was delicious. The location is perfect as very central - near the shops, lake and bars and also the ski lift and buses. We enjoyed a few evenings at the Gin House at the bottom of the hotel. The only reason I haven't rated 5 stars is because of the noise from the road early morning (not the hotel's fault) but part of being centrally located. My only tip is to take earplugs :-) Already looking forward to next year. Thank you Hotel Zum Hirschen for a great week!
