If you stay here make sure you save some time just to sit on the porch of your cabin and watch the light change on the mountains. Such tranquil moments along with the casual atmosphere and the genial attentiveness of the proprietors set this place apart. Not that there's anything slouchy about the spotlessly clean, rustic cabins and their charming... More

We were very pleased when we arrived here. We stayed in the bunk house. It was a little tight but enough room for six of us. The owner was super great and tried to help anyway she could and give suggestions on places to visit. We would surely stay here again if we were to go back to Custer!

We loved the Shady Rest Motel and fell in love with Ann and her family who own the property....our first two nights we stayed in one of the retro cabins and then moved to one of the newly renovated cabins, which are beautifully done.. The cabins are well kept...clean and adequately supplied if you need to cook a meal.....The property... More

This is not a big 5 star hotel (obviously) but I gave it 5 stars for convenience, cleanliness and location. Custer is a perfect area to stay - central to everywhere in the adjacent "Black Hills" (just 10+ minutes to Jewel Cave) and an easy drive to the Wild Life Loop, etc.. Our cabin had a small kitchenette - 2... More

We booked this place based on online reviews and were we glad we did! My first impressions were very positive when I called and spoke to the owner, Ann...super friendly and asking questions to ascertain our needs for accommodations. Since she did not have one cabin available for the 2 consecutive nights, she was able to book us in Cabin... More

Our family had a blast in South Dakota. This place is located in town and you can easily walk to dinner and shops. Our favorite part was that there was a park across the street. We spent alot of time there!

My husband and I spent 8 nights in Cabin #3. It was a clean and cozy cabin. Everything we needed for our vacation and more. Ann and John could not have been better hosts. We were warmly greeted and treated like family. They have friendly and polite children too! The location is perfect, just 2 blocks from Main Street in... More

Just got home from Custer, SD. I stayed 5 days in the Hunting Lodge with another family (9 people total and my dog), I checked with owner Ann every a.m. before taking off for day--she was a wealth of knowledge of neat places to stop at or try to get to en route. Custer was a great little town and... More

By far, this is my favorite place to stay in the Black Hills area. The cabins are cute, comfortable and very clean. Enjoy sitting on the porch, utilizing the hot tub, and walking to nearby places. I love the two orange tabby cats (Thomas and Sara) who act as hosts. And love opening the window and having fresh air which... More

hoping to avoid tourism crowds in the historic city, we planned our stay in one of the cabins. Tucked away rather nicely on a hillside just barely outside the city. The cabins also made it possible, and easy, to access the bike trail without needing to move our car. Our cabin was probably just a little small, for what we... More
