Detailed Reviews
The owners, Bill and Jennifer, are extremely delightful and hospitable hosts. Bill and Jennifer, as well as their staff, are very pleasant, hardworking and provide wonderful sightseeing information for their guests.
The campground is in a great location - just a short drive from Custer State Park, Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Deadwood, Needles Highway and much, much more.
This beautiful, picturesque campground features spacious campsites, firewood delivered to the campsites, super-clean bathrooms and showers, as well as a wonderful family game room and great laundry room. In addition, all guests receive fantastic customer service!
Be sure to stop into their campground store where you will be greeted with a warm, friendly smile and great conversation!
Our family absolutely recommends this campground and we will definitely return to this paradise in 2022!

We stayed here the last week in September and we brought are dog. We were at site 28A which had water and electric and was a great site for a dog. there was a lot room at this site and the people at either side were pretty far away from us and we didn't have anyone behind us only big rocks & trees. We were in a tent and had a nice area to put it up. the site across from us site 29 is another good site for a dog. there is a lot of room one side of the site and deer came every night to eat the green grass there. It was fun to watch them. We also saw and heard wild turkeys a few times too. The rest rooms were pretty clean, I think I happened to shower after people who didn't clean up after themselves. they offered both a fire pit as well as a cooking grill and a picnic table .the staff were very helpful and friendly. Site 55 is also a real nice site too! By 9:00 p.m. he campground was peaceful & quite.

My wife and I camped here in July 2020 and setup our tent on site 81. The site was huge and backed up to the National forest where we enjoyed watching the deer and birds play. It was very relaxing and probably the cleanest campground I have stayed in. The bathrooms and showers were always clean and well maintained. They will deliver ice and firewood to your site and there is WiFi available to help plan your day trips. It is clear that Bill and Jen take great pride in running Big Pine and I can not wait to visit again!

I just got off the phone with one of the rudest employees I have dealt with in a long time. We are having to cancel our 8 week trip out west due to the COVID Virus. Because my reservation was over Labor Day I did not meet the 30 cancellation requirements and will be charged full price. She had no regard for the safety of people and didn’t care why we were canceling. I spoke to 8 other campgrounds today canceling and had absolutely no issues. I will never stay at this campground if that is how they talk to people. Absolutely disgraceful.

Denise/Mike - you are absolutely correct. We have a very strict cancellation policy that we adhere to 100% of the time. For this we make no apologies. What you omitted in your review was that this was communicated to you both over the phone and in your confirmation email. There is no civil unrest in the small town of Custer and we and our guests have enjoyed another wonderful summer of fresh air and good times. As for the pandemic, we have had a large percentage of our reservations cancel - the only difference is that they recognized their discomfort with traveling when the pandemic broke and cancelled accordingly and within the cancellation period. We at Big Pine take our service very seriously and we guarantee great spots, wonderful scenery and clean facilities. When we book your reservations we are committed to adhering to these promises. It is our expectation that our guests likewise adhere to their obligations. That you chose not to is beyond our control. As for our “rude” young person that you spoke to, both owners were present at the time and we are completely comfortable with the manner in which she handled your situation. You may have forgotten, or perhaps you are being somewhat disingenuous, but the staff member did state that if she was able to rent your spot, she would only charge you for the nights she was unable to rent. It appears however that this does not fit your vindictive narrative.

Recommended by friends who live in Custer. This is the place to call home base while staying in the area. You're not packed in like sardines, the wifi is top notch, bathrooms are spotless and most importantly the staff is the absolute best! Take a walk in the National Forest which borders the campground, enjoy the gentle breeze, listen to the pine cones fall on your camper , have a campfire and relax.

Normally, we really prefer to stay in State and National Park Campgrounds. However, in this area of the country, it can be tough obtaining the right campsite in Custer State Park. They book up REALLY fast, can be difficult to reach, and most likely will not have the hook ups that you want or need.
Therefore, we looked at other options and found this privately owned campground. For us, it was convenient in terms of driving to the sights which we planned to visit (except the Badlands which was an all day affair).
This campground keeps very busy during the Summer, however, you do not feel any hustle and bustle of neighbors or any coming and going. We stayed 5 nights; 2 nights in one site and 3 nights in another one. We did not have sewer hook ups, so we dumped (dump station by the main office) when we moved from the first site to the second site.
The friendly owners have owned this campground for three years and love what they are doing. Is the campground perfect? No, however, it is NOT anything like an "RV Park" which we avoid like the plague, and therefore we were glad to be here. Our sites were a bit challenging to get level, but we managed.

We arrived a day ahead of schedule and the owners were able to provide us with a temporary site. The next day we moved to our booked site and loved it. The pine trees are beautiful and provide a nice amount of shade. The sites are roomy and a picnic table and firepit are provided. The grounds are very well kept and the shower houses and laundry area were spic and span. There is a camp store that has about anything you might need or want. The firewood is good quality, sold in a generous quantity and reasonably priced. The town of Custer is only a couple miles away and attractions are with a reasonable driving distance. Last, but not least, the owners and staff were very welcoming, friendly and accommodating. Our whole stay was wonderful making it hard to leave. We highly recommend Big Pine Campground and look forward to our next visit.

Six family groups were able to rendezvous at Big Pine and have a gathering yet still keep our respective distance. The campground facilities are very clean and very well managed. We rented the adorable Retro Camper. For two people it was perfect. The staff were very accommodating and helpful. The location is ideal. It is close to attractions yet you still feel you are “ in the woods”. Will definitely return.

Great camp grounds, great owners, great location! needed a car as we had a motor home and they told me to call Lamont and I got a car the next day and went to Mt Rushmore and Custer State park. Lamont had a sticker on the window and we didn't have to pay. Great location for Crazy Horse, Custer State park, Mt Rushmore,Needles Highway low bridge on Needles Highway, I had to back down with the motor home when we were going to the camp ground the first time. Also went to Mammoth Dig site in Hot Springs definitely a site to see.

We had a group of four campers. Even tho we were looking for spaces just a few weeks before for the week right before the Sturgis Rally the office was extremely helpful and bent over backwards to get us all close together. The campground is shaded with pine trees with nice level sites. Bathrooms and showers were kept very clean during the week we were there. Very reasonably priced compared to all others I checked with. Would definitely stay with them again.

Yes, they have fire rings set up and sell bundles at the office. Added bonus is they will deliver it to your site for you:)
Yes they take reservations and are great people to deal with. Not a bad drive to the attractions. We have a 28 foot class A and don't tow. We had no problem taking our rv. Plenty of parking for rvs of all types. This was, by far, one of the best campgrounds we stayed in on our trip to and from Florida to Alberta, Canada.
