I hope to return to Jean Lafitte House again soon! This was our second stay. Wendy and the staff are very kind and helpful. The location is great, right on the edge of the French Quarter and the Marigny neighborhood, just blocks from Freshmen Street and its music venues, and the French Market. Crescent Park is also a short walk away from the resort along the Mississippi River and always worth a stroll. JLH is a very old and charming building and has its quirks, like an outside staircase that is difficult to navigate with luggage. But the location, staff and architecture more than make up for any drawbacks. The kitchenette is a good size with a regular refrigerator/freezer - one of many nice benefits of this resort.
The resort is located right on the end of the French Quarter, very close to the French Market. The market is open daily and a great place to go get coffee and a crepe in the morning. Right down the street are a few local bars that are open very late into the night. There is a tour called the Dead Frenchmen, which brings you by the guest house and tells the story of Aliester Crowley, who stayed for 3 months in New Orleans, down the street from the resort in what is now called the Red Dragon. It also describes how in 1984, when they were installing a pool at the resort, there were tunnels found running parallel to Esplanade Street. Be sure to stay but bring earplugs! The house is very haunted and the ghosts are very active at night, especially. They make a lot of noise, almost like they don't want you to sleep. There were multiple times I was woken up by someone knocking on the walls. One time I heard someone brushing their teeth in the bathroom just a few feet from my bed, and I was the only one staying in the unit. The ghosts sometimes went up or down the stairs at night, loudly stomping on the steps and slamming doors. There is parking available down the street in a small lot that is home to an old green car that is also the subject of a ghost story explained on the Dead Frenchman tour. The ghosts also liked to.play with the lights and one night they kept flickering on and off. They were heard much more often than seen, while I was there. I was hoping to catch a glimpse of the "lady in white" that is said to inhabit the house, but no luck. I also heard of the "child in the mirror" but didn't see him either. I did see a white mist in the dining room one day but it disappeared quickly. I highly recommend staying here, the staff was very kind and sweet, the house was very clean, and it is in a pretty good location. Just be prepared for ghosts making a lot of noise while you are there!…
When we arrived we were told our reservations that we made 1& 1/2 weeks earlier, had been cancelled the NIGHT before. No one contacted me, in fact I spoke & messaged the hotel on 3 different occasions before arrival. They offered us a suite on the 3rd floor that was HORRIBLE. It smelled of mold, nothing was nice, furniture was cheap and old. Carpet was old & filthy dirty. This place is a dump. Don’t waste your time or money on this nightmare
My wife and I and our friends from California stayed here for a week in June. It is very old but in a great location. There are three floors with no elevator. Hard to get your luggage up to the top. The 2 bedroom was big but only 1 shower 2 toilets. The furnishings were very outdated!! Also not enough seating in the living area. The kitchen was not stocked for cooking very well. 2 cup coffee pot for a 2 bedroom. We had to go buy a normal coffee pot. Also no skillet to cook with. The balcony was huge but there was no patio furniture at all. If you wanted to sit out there you had to move the dining chairs to sit. I think this place would be great if they just updated the furnishings. The staff were great! If I was to go back to New Orleans I would probably look for somewhere else in the French Quarter.…
We stayed in Room 3 at The Jean Lafiite House in November for a week. I rated the hotel a 4/5 for the hotel itself. I will start with TA's reviews. The pictures of the hotel are fairly accurate. The rooms are dark and a little rustic. The furniture is old and should be replaced. I understand being authentic, but this was just older furniture. I am glad I took Lysol to spray down the couch and the recliner. The kitchen was adequately stocked. There is a dining room table large enough for 6. The carpet in Room 3 was definitely worn and had stains throughout the apartment. The 2 bedroom apartments are on the top floor and are hard to navigate for those with mobility issues. Room 3 has a LARGE balcony that faces Esplanade. The noise from the street is VERY loud at night; car traffic with their radios BLASTING, sirens from the FD down the street and police rolling to a call, people walking around. It is NOT quiet. But the balcony is nice at night to just sit. Unfortunately, our neighbors decided to fight for our first 2 nights and took it onto the balcony. I learned a lot about their relationship :). NO is a 420 friendly city and the smell is everywhere. It was sometimes overwhelming, lofting up into the front bedroom. It looks like the management just renovated the 2 bathrooms. They were nice, but a little small, but normal for NO. Be advised that the beds were not very comfortable. Once there, management helped with the initial check in, but was not on site for most of the time. Jason gave me his personal cell /number and I was able to get him for most requests. Prior to our arrival, it was almost impossible to reach anyone by telephone or email. Management needs to improve in this area. At checkout, Jason held our bags for a couple of hours so we could get lunch, thanks. This location is great to visit Frenchmen Street. Sadly, most of the places were closed due to the Coronavirus. If you plan on an Uber it will cost at least $13 to get to Canal Street. Verti market is about a 3-5 minute walk; good sandwiches. All in all, I would recommend this place if you need a 2 bedroom, but know in advance its not the Ritz. I will probably go somewhere else next time.…
I look forward to every visit I take to NOLA and staying at the Jean Lafitte House is an integral part of my experience every time. Jason is both welcoming and personable, making our stay feel comfortable and fit your needs. Besides an impressive history, the Jean Lafitte House has clean and charming rooms, amazing customer service, and walkable to all parts of the city. This is my top recommendation for accommodations in New Orleans.
Jason and staff were very helpful and friendly. Location is hard to beat and loved the historic charm of the hotel. Room was updated, large and clean. Three blocks from the French market and tram. Also, a short walk to Jackson Square.
We enjoyed our week in New Orleans because of the location of the Jean Lafitte House. We were close to the trolley, music and restaurants, but still far enough to have peace and quiet when we wanted. Our unit provided a wonderful blend of historic charm and modern convenience. I was even able to cook our Thanksgiving dinner (on a small scale.) Best of all Jason was an excellent host answering questions and making certain our room was outfitted as we needed. Thank you.
While the people at the “front desk” were nice, my family and I were very disappointed with our first floor 1 bedroom suite. The bed in the room was comfortable, but the pullout couch were extremely uncomfortable. And unfortunately, the other pullout couch was in the living room by a window right beside the street, making sleeping through the night impossible due to periodic loud revelers walking by on Esplanade and how uncomfortabled a pullout it was. When I wrote Lafitte house management after the fact, they said they would try to address the situation, but stopped responding to my emails.
I stayed here for 4 nights, 2 with a friend, one on my own, and one with my mom. It was ideal for all of the above. The one bedroom suite with his and hers sinks in the bathroom and a lovely kitchenette is a perfect home away from homes. The living room provides a pull out sofa as well. Jason is great, and happy to accommodate with any request if it can be done! And Robert was very nice as well! If you're traveling to Nola, definitely look into the Jean Lafitte house!
